Page 4 THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN CAPTAIN’S CORNER – THE LOWDOWN FROM LLOYDY

Q. The competition has certainly changed from when you first played senior foot- ball with Williamstown in 1994. What are the key changes? A. The key change I think is the professionalism of the club and competition. You almost have to approach your football like a full time footballer. The culture of our club has changed with this and the club demands you give it everything or you move on. What was fantastic about 1994 was the closeness of the playing group and the fun we had back then, so we are working hard to ensure this remains. Q. What motivates/drives you to keep playing at VFL level with Williamstown? A. I love the challenge and feeling you get from a win. There is nothing better than being in the rooms after a hard fought win, singing the song and celebrating it with your mates that you have trained hard with all pre-season. I want to do this at the highest level pos- sible and for me it is the VFL. Williamstown is the proudest club in the competition so I would not play anywhere else. Q. How important is the captaincy of Williamstown to you and what key aspects/ focus points do you try to implement amongst the playing group? A. I have wanted to captain the club since I first watched my brother Simon win a pre- miership with them in 1990. It is something I never thought I would get to do, but a role I am very proud of. My focus is on making it a professional atmosphere and making sure we all demand the best from each other. I love watching the young players develop and moments in games where they are having an impact on a Williamstown win. You see all of there hard work come to fruition in one pas- sage of play. Q. In your role as an AFL Player Manager with Elite Sport Properties what advice do you give to young AFL draftees? A. The time on an AFL list can be short and there are no guarantees. Work hard and do extra training and you will always get the best out of yourself. The main thing is if you put everything into it, you will have no regrets down the track on what you could have achieved. Outside football, make sure you are working on a profession or studies as the time will come when you will need to use them. Q. In your own football career you confronted many obstacles to reach AFL level, how driven were you and at times did you consider the goal unreachable? A. When I turned 17 and did not make the Western Jets squad of 100 local players, it hit me that I was a long way off AFL football. I always felt if given the opportunity I could do OK against certain players, but it took many knock backs for it to come along. I made sure I was always prepared and when the opportunity came along to have a practice game with Hawthorn, I was prepared to play and gave it everything. I was then fortunate enough to remain at the club for another 3 years and have the time of my life. My drive comes from my strong family support. My parents never miss a game and they have no expectations of me except that I do my best. My family has been my support through my whole football career so they have been there for me through every knock back and celebrated every success. Q. After two seasons not playing finals football, what are your thoughts on the upcoming season? A. The Match committee have done a great job with our recruiting and have given us every opportunity. The variable that is hard to measure in the VFL is how the young draftees progress but it looks like Collingwood have a talented group. It is now up to the playing group to focus on Brad Gotch’s game plan and to make sure we carry it out. I am very hungry for finals football and I think we have a strong enough list to be successful this year. Q. Which players should the Williamstown faithful be looking forward to watching this year? A. We have a very deep list this year. The additions of some AFL talent like Andrew Williams, Brett Johnson and Steven Greene is in- valuable, as not only are they up there with the best players in the competition, they are also terrific leaders and clubman. There are many good younger players who are good enough to secure a regular spot in the side if the opportunity arises for them. I could name a dozen of them but to name one, Ryan Crawford has had a great pre-season. If he maintains it and gets an opportunity, it could be a big year for him. Q. You have now played 147 senior games with Williamstown, premiership player, 3 time Best & Fairest, VFL State Captain; what does the future hold for Brad Lloyd? A. I have never planned for anything in my football career so far. I started at Avondale Heights as a 6 year old because I loved the game and still do. Since winning the premiership in 2003 and the feeling it brings to the club and everyone involved, it is hard to think about anything but winning another one, so that is my goal.
