  • Feminine Power and Catholic Appropriation in the Early Spanish Philippines
‘SHE SERVES THE LORD’ FEMININE POWER AND CATHOLIC APPROPRIATION IN THE EARLY SPANISH PHILIPPINES A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI’I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY MAY 2018 By Steven James Fluckiger Thesis Committee: Vina A. Lanzona, Chairperson Barbara Watson Andaya Fabio López Lázaro ABSTRACT This study examines sixteenth and seventeenth century Catholic missionaries in the Philippine Islands appropriating feminine power and social power wielded by indigenous feminine figures to expand Catholic influence and authority. During initial contact, missionaries encountered an island chain dominated by indigenous animism that was headed by the maganito, the animist leaders who were typically female. To supplant this, they used indigenous women and the bayog, maganitos who were assigned the male sex at birth but took on a feminine persona, to act as a spiritual leader and appropriated their social and feminine power to build up the Catholic church and to diminish the influence of animist traditions. The study looks at the role these feminine figures, women and the bayog, played in the Christianization process and the influence they had in their communities. The powers these feminine figures wielded included their status as spiritual figures in their societies, their ability to own and control wealth, their role as owners of slaves, their leverage in marital and sexual relationships, and their influence as upper-class members of society. Through these figures, missionaries converted many indigenous people and encouraged them to remain loyal to the Catholic faith and the Church.

JAN RUDZEWICZ DEACON THOMAS MARTIN Secretary: LINO POBLETE www.olgcsanleandro.com REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s ap- peal in the second reading to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the Latin Mass text based on that read- ing. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first read- ing is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. MARIAN FEASTS Marian feast days are specific holy days of the liturgical year that Christians celebrate because of their local, regional, national or international importance. • The Lady of Guadalupe Was the Original Marian Patroness of The
Saturday May 12th The Lady of Guadalupe Was the Original Marian Patroness of the Philippines Poor Rate Written by Bobby Reyes Friday, 11 December 2009 09:45 It all began on December 12, 1531, when Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, a native Indian in the then Spanish colony of Mexico, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tradition says that the Virgin Mary ordered the young man to gather roses from the top of a hill and present the flowers to the local bishop as proof of the apparition. Juan Diego placed the winter-time roses in his cloak and presented them to the bishop. When Juan opened his cloak, the bishop saw the icon of the Blessed Virgin impressed on the cloak. Then the apparition was called of the "Lady of Guadalupe." The veneration to the Virgin of Guadalupe quickly spread in Mexico, who was made the patroness of the Americas. Thirty-three years later, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi led an expedition to the Island of Cebu, where the Spanish crown wanted to continue the unfinished task of Fernando de Magallanes (Ferdinand Magellan), who reached in March 1521 several islands of an archipelago that would later be named Islas de Filipinas. The Legazpi-led expedition reached Cebu (where Magellan died in combat with native warriors) on Feb. 13, 1565. The Legazpi-commanded expedition, which started from the Port of Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, Mexico, included several Spanish friars. The Spanish men of the cloth carried with them several icons of the Lady of Guadalupe to protect them from the elements and other dangers of the sea.

UMAP Discovery Camp 2016 University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) 1. Name of Project: UMAP Discovery Camp 2016 2. Organizer: Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Philippines De La Salle University (DLSU), Philippines Lyceum of the Philippines (LPU), Batangas Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Philippines 3. Dates: July 30 - August 7, 2016 4. Venues: De La Salle University (DLSU), Philippines Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU-B), Batangas Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), Philippines 5. Theme of the UMAP Discovery Camp 2016: Building Environmental and Cultural Awareness in the Asia Pacific Region, Through Philippine Indigenous Environment, Culture and Arts 6. Rationale and Background The effects of climate change are here and now. After being provided scientific information by leading scientists worldwide, we are now feeling its full wrath. The Asia Pacific Region and the rest of the world witnessed how Typhoon Haiyan (Local name, Yolanda) wreaked havoc in several Provinces in Southern Philippines back in 2013. More recently, Tropical Cyclone Winston said to have been the most powerful in the Southern Hemisphere hit hard the island state of Fiji. The challenge for us in this part of the world is not necessarily for residents to become more environmentally aware, but how to be more climates resilient. Given the tons of scientific data as well as simplified climate related information available on social media, how do we make sure that these will help us to be better prepared to face climate realities? In a culturally diverse region, how can we now see our differences and similarities, using the lens of climate resiliency? Higher education institutions play a major role in preparing the youth to face this challenge.

In March 1989, a transgender woman named Judiel Nieva reported that the Virgin Mary appeared to her atop a guava tree in the town of Agoo in the Philippine province of La Union. After much initial fanfare, a theological commission of the Roman Catholic Church declared the apparition as Constat de Non Supernaturalitate, or “clearly evident to be not supernatural.” In the 20 years since then, however, Filipino devotees to the Virgin Mary have continued to flourish, with some even making pilgrimages in different Marian shrines in and outside the country.
