Tuned Souls: The Role of Music in the Lives of Homeless Young People Jill P. Woelfer A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: David Hendry, Chair Susan Kemp Batya Friedman Julie A. Woelfer University of Washington Abstract Tuned Souls: The Role of Music is the Lives of Homeless Young People Jill P. Woelfer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor, David G. Hendry The Information School Although music is considered to be an important part of adolescence and young adulthood, little is known about music and homeless youth. Accordingly, this dissertation research investigated the role of music in the lives of homeless young people, aged 15-25. The study was conducted in Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia and engaged homeless young people (n=202) and service providers staff who work at agencies that provide support for homeless young people (n=24). Homeless young people completed surveys (n=202), design activities, which included drawing and story writing (n=149), and semi-structured interviews (n=40). Service providers completed semi-structured interviews (n=24). Data analysis included descriptive analysis of survey data and qualitative coding of the design activities and interview responses. Findings indicated that music was an important part of everyday life for homeless young people, who listened to music daily (98%), owned music players (89%), and had wide- ranging and eclectic tastes in music which did not vary based on location. -

Rick Sowash: an Annotated Bio-Bibliography of His Vocal Works
RICK SOWASH: AN ANNOTATED BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS VOCAL WORKS D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan M. Olson, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2004 Document Committee: Approved by Professor Loretta Robinson, Adviser Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt ______________________________ Dr. David Frego Adviser School of Music Copyright by Susan M. Olson 2004 ABSTRACT Richard “Rick” Sowash (b. 1950) is a late 20th century American composer who has composed over 250 pieces in many musical genres. According to Sowash, he has modeled his life as a composer after Charles Ives, although his music is far from the style of Ives. Sowash is a multi-talented composer, having written music for a wide range of ensembles. His works have been performed in a number of different venues, from church congregations to a public concert at the Cannes Film Festival. Sowash has composed nearly one hundred original vocal works. None of these pieces has been published to date. This document will bring these unknown works to the attention of vocal students, performers and teachers for future examination and performance. Included in this document is a comprehensive biography of Rick Sowash; a biography of one of Sowash’s most set poets, Sara Teasdale, including comment on Sowash’s compositional settings of Teasdale’s poetry in Bright April and Teasdale Songs; and, an annotated bibliography of his original works for solo voice and accompaniment. ii Dedicated to my family iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thank you to Rick Sowash for his collaboration with me on this project. -

Michigan and Illinois
Sufjan Stevens started his famous "The Fifty States Project" in 2003, the goal of which was to record an album about every state of the United States of America. He made two LPs about his two favorite states – Michigan and Illinois. The first album, simply titled "Michigan," was released in 2003. He constructed the image of Michigan from the point of view of a person who was born and grew up there, then migrated to New York City M aciej Sm ółka and was sentimental about the region of their childhood. Each song was a homage to the beloved home state, telling stories about places, people, cities and natural sites. ThisT LP is a very interesting piece that not only lets one study the way in which the author constructs the image of one’s homeland, but also how he deconstructs the stereotypes, Maciej Smółka publicizes some regional issues, and at the same time promotes the state through music. Say Yes! to M ichigan Because of that, the main purpose of this book is to research Sufjan Stevens's album in the context of the image of the state of Michigan it represents. Say Yes! to Moreover,Mo the analysis of "Michigan" provides valuable information about the popular culture in general – how instrumental can it be in shaping one's impression about a parti- cular place, what is the role of the author of a specific cultural text, what artistic measu- res are used to construct such an impression, and what effects it may cause.
