NJ.com named Mahwah the “Safest Place to Live” in NJ in its 2014 Mrankings. Mahwah is near the Ramapo Mountains and Ramapo River and is bordered by the towns of Upper Saddle River, Ramsey, Allendale, Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes in New Jersey and Ramapo and Suffern in New York. The Ramapough Mountain Indians were the original inhabitants of Mahwah and now number approximately 5,000 people living around the Ramapo Mountains of northern New Jersey and southern New York. The name Mahwah is derived from the Lenni Lenape mawewi, which means, “a place where people and paths meet.” SCHOOL: Mahwah High School is a four-year high school Post Graduation Plans (grades 9-12). Three Elementary schools, an intermediate school and one middle school feed directly into the 2015 2014 2013 district’s only high school. Our current student enrollment Total Graduates 252 286 242 is 952. Post-Secondary 94.1% 95.2% 92.0% FACULTY: The professional staff is comprised of 127 members which includes counselors, librarian/media 4- Yr. Colleges 83.8% 85.7% 76% specialists and special educators. Four full-time counselors 2 - Yr. GRADING & RANKING: Mahwah High School uses a numerical grading system, and does not report individual student GPA Values ranks; the lowest passing grade is 65. Class rank is reported in Letter Grade Numerical Range GPA Value deciles. Rank in class is computed at the end of the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th A 90-100 4.0 & 8th semesters. The decile rank includes all weighted courses. B 80-89 3.0 CURRICULUM: Mahwah High School has a four day rotating C 70-79 2.0 schedule and fifty-five minute classes. Students are scheduled for D 65-69 1.0 eight courses, six of which meet daily. All students complete a F Below 65 0.0 total of 125 credits and show proficiency in mathematics and Language Arts Literacy in order to earn a state-endorsed diploma. There are course offerings in business, world languages, industrial arts technology, performing and visual arts.     January 14, 2014 TO: Chief School Administrators Charter School Leaders ROUTE TO: All teaching staff members FROM: Peter Shulman, Assistant Commissioner/Chief Talent Officer Division of Teacher and Leader Effectiveness SUBJECT: Applications for Tomorrow’s Teachers Training “Recruiting Today’s Students as Tomorrow’s Teachers” The New Jersey Education Association, the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and the New Jersey Department of Education are pleased to invite high school teachers to apply to participate in Tomorrow’s Teachers instructor training in the summer of 2014. This elective course for high school juniors and seniors who aspire to become teachers was developed by the Center for Education, Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA) in South Carolina. Thirty-four states are currently using the tenth edition of the course curriculum to introduce high school students to the teaching profession. Rider University and Fairleigh Dickinson University currently offer college credits to New Jersey high school students who successfully complete the course. Tomorrow’s Teachers is taught for a minimum of one class period a day for a year, or the equivalent of that amount of time in contact hours. The course includes four themes: Experiencing Learning; Experiencing the Profession; Experiencing the Classroom; and Experiencing Education. A variety of hands-on activities and a strong emphasis on observations and field experiences are required. Emphasis is also placed on teaching in critical shortage subject
