    January 14, 2014 TO: Chief School Administrators Charter School Leaders ROUTE TO: All teaching staff members FROM: Peter Shulman, Assistant Commissioner/Chief Talent Officer Division of Teacher and Leader Effectiveness SUBJECT: Applications for Tomorrow’s Teachers Training “Recruiting Today’s Students as Tomorrow’s Teachers” The New Jersey Education Association, the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and the New Jersey Department of Education are pleased to invite high school teachers to apply to participate in Tomorrow’s Teachers instructor training in the summer of 2014. This elective course for high school juniors and seniors who aspire to become teachers was developed by the Center for Education, Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA) in South Carolina. Thirty-four states are currently using the tenth edition of the course curriculum to introduce high school students to the teaching profession. Rider University and Fairleigh Dickinson University currently offer college credits to New Jersey high school students who successfully complete the course. Tomorrow’s Teachers is taught for a minimum of one class period a day for a year, or the equivalent of that amount of time in contact hours. The course includes four themes: Experiencing Learning; Experiencing the Profession; Experiencing the Classroom; and Experiencing Education. A variety of hands-on activities and a strong emphasis on observations and field experiences are required. Emphasis is also placed on teaching in critical shortage subject
