Certain intense urban areas (core towns) of the State have been identified and these together with the rural and urban satellite areas under their influence have been designated as Standard Urban Areas. Comparative Census statistics would be compiled for these areas during the next two decades. The data would throw light on the growth aspects and would be of immense use for purposes of deve­ lopmental planning in the future. This volume contains Table A-V Standard Urban Areas of the A Series. The other 'A' series Tables, viz., A-I to A-IV have already been included in the vo­ lume Part II-A, published earlier. Since this volume contains only Table A-V, it is brought out as a Supplement to Part II-A-General Population Tables. An Introductory Note explaining the concept of Standard Urban Area and bringing out certain salient characteristics of the 32 Standard Urban Areas delineated in Tamil Nadu has been added to enable the readers to understand the data pre~ented in the table. The delineation of the Standard Urban Area~ has been the most important preliminary task in this endeavour and this has been done in collaboration with the Town and Country Planning Organisation of the Government of fndia and the Department of Town Planning of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The delineation and the subsequent demarcation of the villages or panchayats and towns included in each Standard Urban Alea has been done in as scientific a manner as possible taking into account the merits of the places and this was possible by the valuable help rendered by the officials of the above Departments. My thanks are due to the officials of these two departments. Apart from the Main Table, an appendix showing the Primary Census Abstract of 1971 Census relating to al1 the constituent units of the 32 Standard Urban Areas is presented with a view 10 enable the data users to have a clear picture of the poten­ tiality of the areas included in each of the Standard Urban Areas. These areas have been predicted now to possess adequate growth potential for the future, and in particular, during the next 2 or 3 decades and time has to prove the correctness or otherwise of the present predictions. Maps for all the 32 Standard Urban Areas are appended at the end of the volume for facility of reference by data users. The tables were compiled under the guidance of Sri V. R. Chandran and Sri T. R. Rajagopalan, Deputy Directors of CenslLs Operations. Sri M. Panchapa­ kesan, rnvestigator assisted by Sri R. Narayanan, Tabulation Officer, supervised the compilation oftable~ and the drawing of maps. Sri R. Sundaresan, Tabluation Officer and Kum. M.V. Rajalakshmi, Statistical Assistant were in charge of the collection and tabulation of the data presented in the tables. They were assisted by Sri P. Chinnakolandai, Lower Division Clerk, Smt. V. Lalitha, Lower Division Clerk and Smt. B. Rajc~\Vari, Lower Division Clerk and Smt. R. Vanaroja, Assistant Compiler. The maps were drawn in the Cartography Section of my Office consisting of Sri A. Rajamani, Artist and Sri N. Chandran and Sri R. Selvanambi, Draftsmen and Sri M. Kothandaraman, Computor. I thank all the above members for their contribution in bri~ing out this publication. I also wish to thank Sri S.N. Chakraborty, Manager, Sri K. Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Manager (Technical) and Sri P.K. Subramanian, Assistant Manager, (Technical) of the Government of India Press, Coimbatore for the help given in the printing of this volume. The maps were printed at the Photo-Zinco Press of the Central Survey Office, Tamil Nadu, under the guidance of Sri T. V. Subbaraman, Works Manager. I have no doubt that this volume, first of its kind, will be found useful by the Departments of the Tamil Nadu Government engaged in the tasks of town plan­ ning and help plannels in their vital task of lessening overcrowding of indu~tries and population in the already dense urban areas and also in evolving a proper dis­ persal of population which will pave the way for a healthy climate, so necessary for the orderly economic development.
