The seminar focused on transatlantic approaches to writing US Catholic history, with a view to encour- aging scholars of US Catholicism to make more use MATERIALof the Vatican Secret Archives and other Roman repositories. To that end, seminar participants visited seven archives of the Holy See and throughout Rome for hands-on workshops exploring potentially relevant sources. Members of our group, which included graduate students and faculty from universities throughout the United States, were guided by Professor Sanfilippo and other Italian schol- ars, including, most notably, Professor Luca Codignola, then of the University of Genoa. The seminar was an eye-opening experience, revealing the rich potential of Roman archives to enrich individual research projects and the field at large. The earliest generations of US Catholic historians did not need to be convinced of this. Most of them, after all, were clerics or members of religious congregations who had studied in Europe or had close con- nections there. They were conversant in multiple European languages and understood well the transatlantic flows of people, ideas, devotions, and beliefs that shaped the church in the United States.     CCHA, Historical Studies, 62 (1996), 33-46 The Nomination of Michael Fallon as Bishop of London Pasquale FIORINO At the turn of this century, the population of the nine counties that comprise the Catholic Diocese of London, Ontario had reached 500,038. Of these 11.24% professed the Catholic faith, 5.31% claimed French as their ethnic origin, and 21.49% were of Irish descent.1 Given the size of its ethnic population and the agrarian nature of its economy, the London Diocese did not seem to pose any threat to the social and religious peace of the Dominion, but it was soon to become a much debated topic among Catholics and Protes- tants. This upsurge in fame was the result of two events which occurred less than a month apart: the nomination of Michael Francis Fallon as Bishop of the Diocese in December 1909 and the French-Canadian Educational Congress held in Ottawa in January 1910. For the next two decades, Bishop Michael Fallon’s relationship with French-Canadians was a controversial issue in Canadian social and religious life. The investigation of the candidacy and the appointment of Michael Fallon as Bishop of London has been shrouded in mystery and unconfirmed rumours. The Roman hierarchy does not disclose information regarding its methods of investigation or its findings. However, this paper will present the fruits of my research at the Vatican Archives with respect to the nomination of Fallon to the episcopal see of London. On 25 June 1908, the Bishops of Toronto, Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston, Peterborough, and Alexandria met in Toronto to compile a list of three candidates – known as a terna – for the London See which had become vacant following the translation of Bishop Francis Patrick McEvay to the Archdiocese of Toronto.

Sotto questo profilo — concludeva — il mio diventa un corso apologetico»3, che sarebbe terminato con un appello pressante: «Bisogna, per potersi dir uomini interi, diventare cristiani»4. He was ordained to the priesthood in Buffalo, New York. He served as a parish priest, educator, and ecclesiastic administrator in the United States and Newfoundland, spending time as President of St. Bonave- nture’s College, Allegheny, NY, and working in the Diocese of Harbour Grace with Bishop Enrico Carfaganni. As Apostolic Delegate, Falconio was the Vatican’s Representative to Canada. He was both an observer of and a participant in the relations between Church and State. During Falconio’s three year tenure, his observations focused on the Manitoba Schools Question, immigration issues focusing on serving the needs of Ukrainian Catholics, religious and cultural issues centering on the Acadians, French-English tensions in Ottawa where he resided, and internal communication between the rank and file clerics and the episcopate.

    Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced.

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.
