, _~A~~ndar of documents relatjng 1Q..._ Can~9~i n__...!b e Ar chi v_~.? .Q..f.__j; h~..._.__?.?._~re9__~9..D.9.r..~-,,~Jj0'Q..__ ~ciU.l:QQa9.~D_Q..? During Falconio’s three year tenure, his observations focused on the Manitoba Schools Question, immigration issues focusing on serving the needs of Ukrainian Catholics, religious and cultural issues centering on the Acadians, French-English tensions in Ottawa where he resided, and internal communication between the rank and file clerics and the episcopate.

  • Archbishop John J. Williams
Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced.

In this first volume of the history of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles – Scalabrinians that covers the period of 1895 – 1934, Sister Lice Maria Signor dedicates herself patiently in giving an attractive and documented form, the historical path of the MSCS Congregation and does it under diverse aspects: social, economic, political, cultural, ecclesial and religious. It is evidenced her determination in looking at the elements to construct our history and to show how the existence of the MSCS Sisters Congregation, is a historic/missionary path of evangelic service to the migrants, that become the incarnation of the words of Jesus Christ: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25,35). “Seeds emigrate on the wings of the wind, plants emigrate from continent to continent, carried by the water currents, birds and animals emigrate, but more than all, man emigrates, now in a collective form, now in an isolated form but always an instrument of that Providence that presides over the destiny of humans and guides them, also by catastrophes, for the final goal, that of perfectioning man over the land and the glory of God in the heavens” (Scalabrini).

It is based on three main sources: 1) the encyclical Humani generis redemptionem, published in 1917; the unedited drafts, which have recently been made available from the Vatican Secret Archives; 2) Pope Benedict XV’s speeches to the Lenten preachers in Rome (1914-1922); 3) Codex Iuris Canonici’s canons 1327-1351 (the Codex was also published in 1917). The analysis shows that the main concerns un- derlying Pope Benedict XV’s teaching on preaching contained nationalism and fought secularization. • Tor. Greater Pwer and More Efficiency the Preacher's
TOR. GREATER PWER AND MORE EFFICIENCY Vol. V November, 1932 No. 11 THE PREACHER©S MESSAGE TO A LOST WORLD AN EDITOBIAl HAT is sin? It must be something exceedingly grave, or it would not have exacted the sacrifice God made to save man from the death penalty. This indicates its seriousness. The New Testament defines sin thus: "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4. Paul declares: "Until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law." "For where no law is, there is no transgression." Rom. 5:13; 4:15. Many have defined sin; but it ever is "the transgression of the law." It has been set forth as "revolt against God and His will;" a "forensic failure" on the part of man; "transgression of the boundary line of right and wrong." In its workings in the human heart, sin begets selfishness, rebellion, hatred of right eousness, the choosing of that which God©s law prohibits. It engenders hatred toward God because of His goodness, and contempt for those who choose to obey His law. Doctor Guthrie thus graphically depicts sin: "Look not at sin. Pluck off that painted mask, and turn upon her face the lamp of God©s word. We start it reveals a death©s head. I stay not to quote texts descriptive of sin. It is a debt, a burden, a thief, a sickness, a leprosy, a plague, a poison, a serpent, a sting; everything that man hates it is; a load of curses and calamities, beneath whose crushing, most intolerable pressure, the whole creation groaneth.

IN1RODUCTION When visitors come to the Redemptorist residence in Wit tern, a small town in the Limburg Province of the Netherlands, they cannot help but notice the pride taken in the memory of the Redemptorist Cardinal Willem van Rossum. Looming large in the church is van Rossum's memorial statue, in exquisite white Carrara marble. They are told that the statue was carved in 1939 by the official sculptor of the Vatican, Enrico Quattrini, and that the cardinal's remains lie just behind the memorial, inside a spe cial vault within the church wall.
