In several respects periodicals reflected the multiplicity of rapidly growing Eastern cities: they assembled a variety of "voices" in single texts and maintained a dialogue between editors and readers. At the same time, the magazines sought to create a more homogenous middle-class audience that would equate the capitalist transformation of American society with the "natural" progress of democracy. This dissertation examines that process by analyzing the writing and careers of four "magazinists": Nathaniel Parker Willis, Caroline Kirkland, Lydia Maria Child, and Edgar Allan Poe. All four edited periodicals, all were a part of the New York literary scene of the 1840s, and all wrote numerous prose pieces that would be classified today as short stories. However, their careers took very different directions as each writer focused much of his or her writing on a distinct segment of American society: Willis on "aristocratic" New Yorkers, Kirkland on Western settlers, Child on oppressed minorities, and Poe on "modern" businessmen and the members of his own profession. I argue that as these four writers exploited the desire of their audience to know about and categorize these American subcultures, they both embraced and challenged— to various degrees— the optimistic myths that would solidify a national middle-class culture. Their work and their careers in what Poe called the "magazine prison-house" present four contrasting visions of American democracy. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: THE AGE OF MAGAZINES AND MIRACLE-WORKING PILLS Decidedly this is the age of magazines, as well as of rail-roads, Ericson-propellers, miracle- working pills, and medicated candy. All literature approximates to the magazine, either in form or character; books are so printed and bound as to resemble monthly periodicals; and newspapers, unable to emulate them in appearance, strive to do so in the variety and nature of their contents.— The Columbian Magazine, 1844.1 Self-promoting commentary such as this appeared frequently in magazines of the 1830s and '40s, but statistics bear out their claims: fewer than one hundred periodicals other than newspapers circulated in the United States in 1825, but by 1850 there were approximately 600, and more than 4000 others started and folded during the same period.2 The Columbian editorial hints at why the first periodical "boom" occurred when it did: the second quarter of the nineteenth century was also the dawn of modern transportation, mass production, and consumer capitalism in the United States. Railroads, "miracle-working" products, and name-brand advertising characterized the age along with magazines seeking to "democratize" literature by appealing to as wide an audience as possible. While the "market revolution" of the early nineteenth century set the publishing revolution in motion, print, in turn, became one of the most effective tools of modern capitalism. Technological advances such as stereotyping, machine-made 1 2 paper, and (in the late 1830s) the steam press made printing cheaper and faster, providing the means for transferring information, promoting products, and— most important to this study— disseminating the myths that would solidify a national "middle class" culture.3 The ways in which four "magazinists"— Nathaniel Parker Willis, Caroline Kirkland, Lydia Maria Child, and Edgar Allan Poe--shaped, promoted, and challenged those myths is the subject of this dissertation. Of course, periodicals were only one of many print media involved in the transformation of American life in the first half of the nineteenth century; reform tracts, school books, advice manuals, travelogues, and histories from this period all deserve closer attention than they have received.4 But

The next two years he spent in New Haven studying theology. In February, 1727, he was ordained minister at Northampton, Massachusetts. In the same year he married Sarah Pierrepont, who was an admirable wife and became the mother of his twelve children. In 1733 a great revival in religion began in Northampton. So intense did this become in that winter that the business of the town was threatened. In six months nearly 300 were admitted to the church. Of course Edwards was a leading spirit in this revival. The orthodox leaders of the church had no sympathy with it. At last a crisis came in Edwards’ relations with his congregation, which finally ended in his being driven from the church.

The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his anti-slavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of A Fable for Critics, a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published The Biglow Papers, which increased his fame. He would publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career. Maria White died in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in 1854.

I argue that Doten was successful in selling her book. She was able to accomplish this by taking advantage of the public interest of spiritualism during the 19th century and Edgar Allen Poe’s fan base. Introduction In 1909, New York Times newspaper published an article in its November issue under the name Laureate of Spookland: Strange Case of Lizzie Doten, Writer of ‘Spirit Verse.’ They acknowledged Lizzie Doten’s ability of communicating with dead poets and publishing their poems in her book titled Poems from the Inner Life (New York Times, 1909). Even though forty-five years had passed since the publication of her book, Doten still received notice from one of the leading newspapers. However, her popularity derived from communicating with spirits was not uncommon. Along with being seen as a movement that has helped in promoting radical political and cultural beliefs such as women’s rights and abolitionism, spiritualism, the belief in the possibility in communicating with the dead, has provided a profession and fame through many mediums.

He went on to explain that ' |m]arried men and single men, old women and pretty girls; milliners and masons; cohhiers, colonels, and counter-jumpers; tailors and teachers; lieuten- ants, loafers, ladies, lackbrains, and lawyers; printers and parsons—'hlack spirits and white, hiue spirits and gay'—all 'go out to hoard'" ("New York" 22-23). Today his pronouncement mystifies. Not only has urhan hoarding as a social fact all hut vanished, hut the boardinghouse as a cultural phe- nomenon, as the kind of conspicuous ohject-image that invited commen- tary to hegin with, likewise has faded from view. Yet Americans of Whitmans day truly were "a hoarding people," drawn as they were to hoardinghouses in astonishing numhers. While the majority of United States residents still favored the stand-alone dwelling (Martin 148), Whitmans later claim that three-quarters of Manhattan's adult population had boarded or was boarding as of 1856 hints at the central place the hoardinghouse held not just in New York hut in nine- teenth-century American life generally ("Wicked" 95; Benedict 101).' But what Whitman's remarks most suggest is this: that the antehellum hoard- inghtjuse was otice glaringly worth writing about and that boarding car- ried discursive consequences for a people pressed hy urhan necessity into the improvised living arrangement that once upon a titne was boarding. Simply put, the process hy which hoardinghouse life was translated into a boardinghouse-oriented print tradition, and so hecame a legitimate literary genre in its own right, reveals much ahout the period.

This period was, in the United States, an era of invention and innovation in all branches of science. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and sev- eral histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with sub- jects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of ob- servational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written un- der the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved in- ternational fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. in 1819–20. He continued to publish regularly — and almost always successfully — throughout his life, and just eight months before his death (at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York), completed a five- volume biography of George Washington. Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Eu- rope, and Irving encouraged American authors such Watercolor of Washington Irving’s Encounter with George Wash- as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry ington Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe.
