  • Croatian War Fiction Detachment and Personal Experience1 Jurica Pavi I
Croatian War Fiction Detachment and Personal Experience1 Jurica Pavii There is probably no expression that is as untrue as inter arma musae silent. War is an extremely distorted social condition and has always provided an inexhaust- ible supply of themes, destinies, motives and images for the art of story telling. War is an extreme condition, a time when, in the words of Jan Kott, 'history has broken loose from its chain', and when a society nervously turns to fiction to tame history, to classify and tidy it up, to verify it against narrative, aesthetic parameters. War is also a time when literature, especially narrative prose, is faced with the unspeakable proximity of ethnic cleansing, slaughter, death camps, rape, fire, all kinds of cruelty and vice, accumulated hatred and material and spiritual damage that will not heal for decades, and when it must quickly redefine its poetic principles and values. We cannot avoid considering the thought expressed in Bertold Brecht's verses, that in terrible times 'it is almost a crime to talk about trees because it means to be silent about atrocity'. Of course it is not a crime to 'talk about trees', but in the conditions it is unexpected, an act of rejection. The war will scar every work of fiction: either through its absence, or its presence. Reality is steeped in such horror that it is impossible to tame and order it: the channel of communication is simply too restricted for the enormity and the intensity of horror. Croatian writers are faced with the problem of how to express in literature what they have gone through.

Palabras clave: Pintura, Montaje cinematográfico, Ibiza, Islas Baleares, Fraude, Falsificación Abstract: In 1973, Orson Welles filmed an Elmyr d’Hory’s biopic, a well known painter in the international art market for his forger’s condition. This is an exceptional film with a combination of fiction and reality. Its character with cinematographic rich language, the relation with art history and the filmig exteriors in Ibiza were the point of depature of this research work. Key words: Painting, Film editing, Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Fake, Forgery INTRODUCCIÓN Fraude es un fraude.

AiA Art News-service F is for Fake: Welles Explores Truth in Deception NOVEMBER 20, 2015 2:04 AM0 COMMENTS By NICK SWAN Orson Welles’ documentary F is for Fake is as much an exploration of one filmmaker’s idiosyncratic technique, as it is a philosophical debate about authenticity and expertise. COURTESY OF SPECIALTY FILMS Released in 1974, F is for Fake is Orson Welles’ last completed film — the culmination of an extensive and acclaimed career in artistic media. The beginning of Welles’ work actually existed not in film, but rather in theatre and radio. In 1937, Welles wrote a modern adaptation of and starred in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Although it premiered in an independent theatre, Caesar was soon moved to Broadway, where it ran until 1941. Welles burst onto the radio platform when, in 1938, he delivered the infamous “War of the Worlds” broadcast. Despite its notoriety for the panic and widespread hysteria that it caused, this broadcast additionally served to exemplify and draw attention to Welles’ skills in dramatic acting and oration His talent would make him a household name a few years after the zenith of Welles’ career, Citizen Kane. Widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the history of film, Citizen Kane depicts the life of the fictional Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles. His performance in this role is marked by moments of boisterous rhetoric as well as more nuanced scenes of passionate drama. Welles also directed and co- wrote Citizen Kane; The film’s revolutionary fast-paced editing and montage segments exhibit Welles’ unique cinematic vision and would influence not only his later work, but also the technique of many future directors.

  • Staging Orson Welles
STAGING ORSON WELLES Matthew Christopher Gretzinger A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2010 Committee: Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Dr. Stephannie Gearhart Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Scott Magelssen Dr. Cynthia Baron ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Advisor In this study I consider the legacy of Orson Welles as a stage figure puppeted in a collective theatre of memory. The study builds on Jonathan Rosenbaum's observation that Welles remains a "mythical and ideological creature" and a "site for the acting out of various fantasies." Referencing Marvin Carlson's The Haunted Stage and Joseph Roach's Cities of the Dead, I apply their insights to three plays that feature Welles as a pivotal character: Jason Sherman's It's All True, Austin Pendleton's Orson's Shadow, and the Naomi Iizuka-Anne Bogart collaboration, War of the Worlds. My central concern is to consider the ways we remember and stage Welles and, in light of Rosenbaum's insight, to also question the myths and ideologies those stagings act out. A corollary to my interrogation of Welles's stage figure as a site of memory is my conviction that the collective memory of Welles's life and work might be staged more usefully. The plays considered approach Welles from different perspectives. However, all – to varying degrees – assess negative judgments. Welles's legacy has been subject to conflicting interpretations, and the arbitration of his historical and remembered significance is a process with important consequences.

I also owe a debt of a kind to Bernard Herrmann who, after telling me that any interest in Kane today was an absurdity, reluctantly informed me that the libretto of his fake opera Salammbô sprang from an "obscure work of Racine," thus involving me in days of searching until I found it in Racine's most famous play.

  • Discovering Orson Welles
31564_U01.qxd 11/8/06 3:05 PM Page 16 1 I Missed It at the Movies Objections to “Raising kane” The first item in this collection—written in late 1971 as an article for Film Comment but run as a book review—is one of the first pieces of film criticism I ever published. It also proved to be one of the most consequential for me person- ally. Among its probable consequences was the blocking of any possible friend- ship with Pauline Kael—a writer I had admired and learned from, in spite of the objections stated here, and whose own early polemical forays in I Lost It at the Movies undoubtedly exerted some influence on my own, as my title suggests. (I was surprised to hear from friends of hers much later that this article had such a negative effect on her; I had wrongly and perhaps naïvely assumed that because she had been so adroit at such polemical forays herself, in a spirit of fair play, she would have been more tolerant of one waged against her own writing.) Another possible (and more important) consequence was getting invited to lunch by Orson Welles in Paris a few months later, after writing him a letter asking a few questions about his first feature film project—the subject of chapter 2. I don’t know if Welles ever read my attack on “Raising kane,” and Kael’s ar- ticle never came up during our lunch. In my letter I alluded to having just pub- lished such an attack, which might have bolstered his good will if he hadn’t al- ready been aware of it.
