It represents one of the most dramatic falls from grace in British corporate history and one of the greatest corporate governance fiascos of all time. The study investigates the wealth effects of Marconi’s sell-offs and acquisitions on its shareholders’ value by calculating the abnormal returns on the announcement days of all the disposals/acquisition during 1996-2002. The results support the view that shareholders’ value increases when a company proceeds to corporate sell-offs to pursue a focus strategy. However, the authors conjecture that GEC/Marconi has destroyed shareholders’ value through these disposals/acquisitions because of several mistakes, such as being prone to heavy debt. © 2007 World Research Organization.     Recycling of Type 22 Frigates Campbeltown Chatham Cumberland Disposal Services Authority Defence Equipment & Support Contents Executive Summary Executive Summary In 2013 an open competition for the disposal of the three Type 22 Destroyers Ex- HMS Campbeltown, Chatham & Cumberland was undertaken and the Background Disposal Services Authority awarded preferred bidder status to the Turkish company LEYAL Introduction Ship Recycling Ltd whose formal proposal was to conduct the recycling of all three Type 22 Destroyers at their dedicated ship dismantling Competition facility in Aliaga Turkey. The vessels were towed independently and the first Recycling of Former Type 22 Frigates vessel Ex-HMS Chatham left HMNB Portsmouth Campeltown, Chatham and Cumberland under tow on the 8th October 2013 followed by Ex-HMS Campbeltown on the 15th October and finally Ex-HMS Cumberland on the 4th November Photographic Evidence arriving in Aliaga on the 14th November after passing south along the Portuguese coast and Final Outturn passing through Gibraltar. Ex-HMS Chatham was the first vessel to arrive Conclusion at LEYAL Ship Recycling Ltd on the 28th October 2013 and she was fully recycled by the 12th February 2014. Following GEC's acquisition of Marconi as part of English Electric in 1968 the Marconi brand was used for its defence businesses e.g. Marconi Space & Defence Systems (MSDS), Marconi Underwater Systems Ltd (MUSL). GEC's history of military products dates back to World War I with its contribution to the war effort then including radios and bulbs. World War II consolidated this position with the company involved in many important technological advances, most notably radar. Between 1945 and GEC's demerger of its defence business in 1999, the Marconi S511 radar located at company became one of the world's most important defence contractors.
