The project was funded by the European Union (Directorate General for Research), with contributions from DFID (Department for International Development, UK) and AFD (Agence Française de Développement, France). The publication of this synthesis has been funded by DFID, which supports policies, programmes and projects to promote international development. DFID provided funds for this study as part of that objective but the views and opinions expressed are those of the authors alone.
