We wish you a fruitful, exciting and unforgettable mobility period at Sofi a University! 1 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Brief history Founded in 1888 Sofi a University was named after Saint Clement of Ohrid, a medieval Bulgarian scholar, who was also the fi rst bishop to preach in the Old Bulgarian language. Sofi a University is the oldest school of higher education in the country. Its birth date is October 1, 1888, when the Higher Pedagogical Class at the First Boys‛ High School in Sofi a was founded. The fi rst class consisted of 43 students, all male. Two thirds of them were scholarship holders. The 7 lecturers (4 of them working full time and 3 part time) all had European degrees and scholarly achievements. A law passed on December 18th, 1888 transformed the Higher Pedagogical Class into a School of Higher Education. The fi rst elected Rector was Alexander Theodorov – Balan, who had degrees from the universities of Prague and Leipzig and a doctorate from Prague University, and taught linguistics, dialectology and Slavic philology. In 1891 the fi rst class of 34 students graduated from the Department of History and Philology and the next year a class of 23 graduated from the Department of Physics and Mathematics. In 1892 a third department – the School of Law – was founded, with 67 students and professors. At the end of 1894 a royal decree approved a Law of Higher Education and the departments became faculties. The Faculties of Medicine and Theology were added to the School of Higher Education and in 1904 it was transformed into a University. Saint Clement of Ohrid (840 – 916) was a medieval Bulgarian saint, scholar, writer and enlightener of the Slavs. He was the most prominent disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius and is often associated with the creation of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic scripts, especially their popularization among Christianized Slavs. He was the founder of the Ohrid Literary School and is regarded as a patron of education and language by some Slavic nations. It is designed by the Bulgarian architect Yordan Milanov, who based his conception on the design 5 initially proposed by the French architect Henri Breasson. The construction started on June 30th, 1924, and the building was offi cially opened on December 16th, 1934.

We did our best to offer more information both about the training in the field of cinema studies and the financing opportunities in this country, as well as about gaining support outside Bulgaria, the recent Bulgarian productions and their success, about the TV environment and the legislation. Prof. Rumyana Dimitrova Marinova-Christidi, Ph.D. Faculty of History Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Bulgarians and Jews have for centuries lived together in a tolerant and loyal manner. The very first Bulgarian Constitution, adopted in 1979 upon the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman Rule, guaranteed the political equality of the ethnical and religious minorities in a period when Jews had a major role not only in the economic, but also in the political and cultural life of the country. Bulgarian Jews were internationally recognized individuals like the painter Jules Pascin, originally from Vidin and the Nobel Prize winner for literature Elias Canetti, born in Rousse, as well as many other members of the Bulgarian intellectual elite. The Bulgarian Jewish Community maintained excellent relations with the state and in 1909 the Bulgarian Monarch family attended the grand opening of the impressive new Sofia Synagogue – the third largest in Europe and among the most beautiful. As loyal subjects of the Bulgarian state the Jews took part in the wars for Bulgarian national unification. During the Serb-Bulgarian War of 1885 some Jews reached the rank of colonel in the Bulgarian army. The names of some Jewish soldiers and officers are prominent during the Balkan wars of 1912-1913 and during the First World War. The total number of Jews, killed in these wars is 952. In the period between the two world wars the Jewish Community in Sofia accounts for around 0.8% of the total Bulgarian population, reaching approximately 50 000 people.

    Some things you may find useful to know… About Bulgaria Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria is a country in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometers (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 16th-largest country. Its population of 7.4 million people is predominantly urbanized and mainly concentrated in the administrative centers of its 28 provinces. Most commercial and cultural activities are centered on the capital and largest city, Sofia. The country is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe. The climate in the country is dynamic, which results from its being positioned at the meeting point of Mediterranean and continental air masses and the barrier effect of its mountains. Northern Bulgaria averages 1 °C (1.8 °F) cooler than the regions south of the Balkan mountains. Temperature amplitudes vary significantly in different areas. The lowest recorded temperature is −38.3 °C (−36.9 °F), while the highest is 45.2 °C (113.4 °F). Situated at a crossroads between civilizations, Bulgaria has more than 13 centuries of recorded history and one of the richest cultural legacies in Europe. Modern Bulgarian culture derives from three ancient civilizations: the Bulgars, then Thracians, and the Slavs. The territory was also part of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires for several centuries. Bulgarians are the main ethnic group in the country and comprise 84.8% of the population.

Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

It was established on 14 July 1992.
