Exhibition POLAND – 15 YEARS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION 30 April – 10 August 2019 On the fence of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Sofia Evlogi Georgiev Blvd. Poles enjoy a long tradition of cooperating with other free nations and creating lasting state structures with their equal participation. At the turn of June and July 1569, at a general Sejm in Lublin, the eastern part of today’s Poland, deputies who represented the free nations of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania signed the Union of Lublin thus creating a single state called the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. This was the first union of nations in Europe that transferred a part of their sovereignty to a higher community having greater potential without losing their powers and real influence on the workings of a commonwealth. This Union created a strong, stable and prosperous subject of international law, with a flourishing, unique and original political system based on the tradition of monarchy and an attachment to republican values. Personal freedom and equality of citizens of that time was respected, and religious freedom was guaranteed in an official document – the act of the Warsaw Confederation (1573). It was exactly such principles, which were the foundation of the Union of Lublin, that the European Union was established on almost four hundred years later.
