It received very positive reaction from the visitors and today there are multiple ‘open-air galleries’. The article examines 170 river names from the basin of the Iskar river – the largest tributary of the Danube in Bulgaria. The origin and significance of river names emerge through the application of traditional onomastic methods – onomastic (etymological) analysis and onomastic reconstruction. Comparative onomastic data from adjacent and more distant regions in Bulgaria and the Balkans are also drawn on. Conclusions about the relative antiquity of the hydronyms are drawn. Using comparative case-study Governance analysis, this paper examines the extent to which nature-driven stewardship initiatives recognize and redress Stewardship inequalities. We compare two urban contexts that have undergone significant societal transformations over the Inequality last two to three decades: Sofia and Cape Town. The comparison shows how nature-driven stewardship in- Inclusive Cities in transition itiatives differentially address deeper roots of environmental, social and racial privilege shaped significantly by post-socialist and post-apartheid transition contexts. Instead of assuming a homogenous ideal of urban nature and focusing on questions of the distribution of urban nature and its access, this paper finds it is important to consider the kinds of social relations that are required to both shape decision-making processes and generate meaningful and diverse values and ways of relating to nature in the city. Furthermore, it finds that inclusive nature-based solution governance recognizes and redresses both inequalities in access and inequalities that perpetuate dominant views about what nature is and for whom nature is produced and maintained.

This thesis is a comparative analysis of three transitional periods in Bulgaria coinciding with 1) the latter years of Ottoman dominion: 1762-1877, 2) the end of the Balkan Wars and World Wars I and II: 1878- 1947, and 3) the latter years of the Communist dominion: 1947-1989. These periods will be analyzed with the aim to understand the role that regional political agendas have played in shaping an imagined Bulgarian national identity. It will be shown that when it has occurred, identity-based conflict in Bulgaria can be better explained by examining the contributions of nationalist political influences from 1876 – 1989 on identity construction rather than an inherent Balkan propensity to religious and ethnic intolerance.

    The Fate of the Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust – the Menace, the Rescue, the Aliya Assoc. Prof. Rumyana Dimitrova Marinova-Christidi, Ph.D. Faculty of History Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Bulgarians and Jews have for centuries lived together in a tolerant and loyal manner. The very first Bulgarian Constitution, adopted in 1979 upon the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman Rule, guaranteed the political equality of the ethnical and religious minorities in a period when Jews had a major role not only in the economic, but also in the political and cultural life of the country. Bulgarian Jews were internationally recognized individuals like the painter Jules Pascin, originally from Vidin and the Nobel Prize winner for literature Elias Canetti, born in Rousse, as well as many other members of the Bulgarian intellectual elite. The Bulgarian Jewish Community maintained excellent relations with the state and in 1909 the Bulgarian Monarch family attended the grand opening of the impressive new Sofia Synagogue – the third largest in Europe and among the most beautiful. As loyal subjects of the Bulgarian state the Jews took part in the wars for Bulgarian national unification. During the Serb-Bulgarian War of 1885 some Jews reached the rank of colonel in the Bulgarian army. The names of some Jewish soldiers and officers are prominent during the Balkan wars of 1912-1913 and during the First World War. The total number of Jews, killed in these wars is 952. In the period between the two world wars the Jewish Community in Sofia accounts for around 0.8% of the total Bulgarian population, reaching approximately 50 000 people.
