It is a difficult decision to place an issue on the ballot especially following an earlier defeat. Unfortunately, just because a levy fails, the problems, concerns, and issues that led to the initial placement of an issue on the ballot in May did not go away because the levy was defeated. Masonry, plumbing, HVAC, elec- trical, and proper classroom space didn’t just go away. They continue to need attention and the use of increasing maintenance and repair dollars that gradually reduce the dollars utilized in the classrooms. While this decision was difficult and proposes challenges for our tax payers, it was the most fiscally responsible decision that could be made. It is not feasible to continue to throw thousands or potentially millions of dollars toward 100 year-old problems. We can deal with these issues in the short term or we can look at the whole picture and make the necessary improvements now. It is inevitable that short term fixes in a long term process would not only necessitate repeatedly having to go back on the ballot to ask the tax payers for more and more, but the cost of the total project would also show a marked increase. When you look at the big picture, the decision of the Board was the most fiscally sound and responsible decision they could make. August 2014 Knightly News Page 5 MS & HS Social Studies Teachers Experience Learning Opportunity

Van Buren social studies teachers Rob (high school) and Jen Obenour (middle school) were selected by the University of Findlay and the Community Foundation to be two of the nine Findlay/Hancock County teachers to receive the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to tour and study in Japan. The focus of this tour scholarship program, led by University of Findlay professor Dr. Hiro Kawamura, was to examine first-hand cultural diversity, with the goal of bringing more internationalization into our local classrooms. Following the flight into Tokyo, the group consisting of teachers from Cory Raw- son, Findlay, Riverdale, and Van Buren, traveled to Okayama (central Japan) where they spent several days studying a variety of Japanese schools and discussing the status of education in both Japan and the USA. This was culminated with a 2-hour media covered educational symposium at one of Japan’s prestigious English immer- sion schools, Esau Gakkan. The group then spent one day touring the GS Electech facility in Nagoya, which is the parent company of Findlay’s GSW manufacturing, before to Hiroshima. Here, the group toured the atomic bombing Peace Museum, heard a survivor’s first-hand account of the bombing, walked through Me- morial Park, and visited the ancient shrine on peaceful Miyajima Island. Other interesting facilities with Findlay-ties that the group visited, included the Chiba Institute of Science’s Risk & Crisis Management program in Choshi and the Rakuno Gakuen University in Hokkaido. At the Chiba Institute, which was designed after the Crisis Program at University of Findlay, the group met with professors and scientists including Dr. Kazuo Fujimoto, Japan’s leading project researcher on the designing of deep sea barriers to combat tsunamis, and Dr. Takao Ando, who is leading the way in off- shore wind-powered generators. Dr. Ando will also be a guest instructor at the University of Findlay in 2015. While at Rakuno Gakuen Univer- sity in Sapporo, the group met with several of Japan’s leading research- ers in the fields of agricultural man- agement and wildlife conservation. Several of these professors have visited and/or guest lectured at the University of Findlay over the past few years. The teacher group concluded their trip with a week-long stay in Saitama Prefec- ture (like an American state) and the city of Tokyo. Here they met with prefecture leaders to discuss a variety of modern social topics including women’s roles in the economy, the growing elderly population, child care, as well as school curriculum and attendance. Dr. Kawamura also arranged for the group to meet with Saitama Governor Kiyoshi Ueda to discuss the state of education in his prefecture. The University of Findlay, The Community Foundation, and the teacher group will recip- rocate with the Governor when he visits Findlay in September. The highlights to their trip to Tokyo included taking in the Imperial Palace, the National Diet, and a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. During their final weekend in the city, Rob and Jennifer were able to take in a Japanese baseball game at the Tokyo Dome. Another highlight of their trip was to visit with former Black Knight ex- change student Kevin Yoo (Class of 2002). If you have an organization that would be interested in hearing more about 21st Century Japan, please contact Rob or Jen via email at [email protected] or [email protected]. Ichi go, ichi e! The award was presented by Dr. Gene Bottoms, senior vice president of the South- ern Regional Education Board (SREB) and founder of MMGW, at the 28th Annual Staff Development Conference in Nashville on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Attend- ing on behalf of VBMS was Mrs. Karen Doxsey, Mrs. Cheryl Bays, and Mrs. Cassie Schaffer. Bottoms praised VBMS for its achievement, noting the crucial role of middle grades schools in preparing more students for success in high school, further stud- ies, work, and citizenship. Bottoms presented the award before an audience of more than 5,000 educators from across the nation attending the conference. Van Buren is one of only six middle grades schools in the nation receiving the MMGW Depth of Implementation Award in 2014. This designation is given to schools that deeply implement the MMGW design, and provide engaging academ- Rob, Jen, and Kevin Yo ics and rigorous curriculum. “This school has shown what can be accomplished by deeply implementing the Making Middle Grades Work model for strengthening curriculum and instruction,” said Gene Bottoms. “The school illustrates the spirit of change and the gains in performance that Making Middle Grades Work advocates to get students ready for challenging academic and career/technical courses in high school.” “Research shows that the ninth grade is a critical transition point for students,” Bottoms said. “Students who struggle in the ninth grade are much more likely to drop out of high school. For that reason, schools in the SREB Making Middle Grades Work initiative devote time and effort in preparing students to be successful in high school.” More than 450 middle grades schools in 21 states participate in the MMGW school improvement initiative to create a culture of high expectations and prepare middle grades students for challenging high school courses and productive ca- reers.
