  • Moments of Observation
John Walker Moments of Observation Sheldon Museum of Art January 18–July 14, 2019 Introduction and Beer With a Painter: John Walker, Revisited by Jennifer Samet ohn Walker’s recent paintings are about a compression of energy: forms and patterns J locked into one another. There is an urgency to his most recent paintings, a directness that is about that relationship between a person and a place, and the impulse to record that relationship through mark making. It is symbolized by how the forms lock into one another: the penetration of earth and shallow water. I think about the painting by Cezanne, The Bay of Marseilles, Seen from L’Estaque, which is also about water and shore locking into one another like mirroring, perfect jigsaw puzzle pieces. For more than fifteen years, Walker has turned his attention and gaze to Seal Point, Maine, where he lives and works. But in the newest paintings, Walker pares down his formal vocabulary to elements like patterns of zigzag lines, painterly, irregular grids, oval-shaped forms and dots. They are abstractions, but they are also landscape paintings that turn the genre on its head. They are oriented vertically, rather than the horizontal format we traditionally code as landscape. The horizon line is pushed to the uppermost portion of the canvas so that only a thin band of form suggests sky, clouds, sun or moon. Instead, Walker focuses on the patterns that form when earth and water meet. And in this area of Maine, the inlets and bays are as much about mud as they are about water.

Copyright February 14, 2021. Geist Christian Church. All Rights Received. Title: Family Values: Friends – One Community Away Preaching: Danny Gulden, Lead Pastor, Promise Road Campu Text: Acts 2:42-47 E-mail: Danny Gulden Watch the Service. The television show Friends aired from 1994 until 2004 and was one of the most-watched tv shows of that timeframe. The show focused on a group of six friends living close to one another in New York City. Chandler, Ross, Joey, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe became household names and must- see tv on Thursday nights. The Central Perk café, a coffee shop where many communal scenes take place, was a leader in Americans making coffee shops a central meeting place, a third space where people gather. The show helped people learned the English language. A 2012 poll by the Kaplan International English Colleges found that more than a quarter of students cited watching the show as the best way for them to improve their English. It also led to a rise in the idea that one can construct families of choice through friends’ groups. According to a pop culture expert at the University of Buffalo, Friends is "one of those rare shows that marked a change in American culture." The images of youth and the roles they portray are better defined and represent a lifestyle that centers around creating and sustaining relationships between friends running their own lives and seeking help from each other.” Today we are concluding a series called Family Values, where we have been looking at the intersection of some favorite tv families and theology and looking at the values they teach us when it comes to relationships both within our families and outside of our families.

The Power of Representation Rethinking Sexuality and Challenging Heteronormativity in RIZZOLI & ISLES Fan Videos Naam student: Liselot Jacobs Studentnummer: 3842622 Studie: Media en Cultuur Begeleidend docent: Hanna Surma Studiejaar 2015-2016 / Blok 2 Inleverdatum: 25-01-2016 Annotatiestijl: Chicago Manual of Style 1 Abstract Fan vidding is a fan practice in which fans poach existing materials from popular culture, which they then transform into a new original text. Fan videos in which gender and sexuality play an important part can then be seen and used as a bridge between fan studies and queer theory. These fan videos can be queer, when commenting on images of heteronormativity and/or slash when centering on a relationship between two same sex characters. Central to this research is the question: how do fans of the television series RIZZOLI & ISLES represent the main character's relationship in their fan videos? Three fan videos, representing the three main fan vidding genres, have been selected and analyzed by looking at the stylistic elements of sound and editing. This research is then structured by the following three sub-questions: how are editing and sound used for the representation of the main character's relationship in a San Francisco School fan video?; how are editing and sound used for the representation of the main character's relationship in a MediaWest fan video?; how are editing and sound used for the representation of the main character's relationship in a Mary van Deusen fan video? Based on the findings of the analyses, it is concluded that all three fan videos, representing the different genres, have offered different ways of using sound and editing when transforming material, poached from popular culture, into a new context.

“FRIENDS” FINALE PRESS KIT Table of Contents Summary Biographies Awards Quotes Impact on TV Guest Stars Montage Photos Timeline Trivia Fast Facts LEGACY AND IMPACT OF ‘FRIENDS’ ON THE TELEVISION INDUSTRY “Along with ‘Seinfeld,’ its Thursday-night sibling, ‘Friends’ redefined the television sitcom at the end of the century. Six attractive kids learning about life -- that was nothing new. But in ‘Friends,’ there was no father, no boss and no authority at all to teach them how to ride a bike or tell them how to get out of second gear. ‘Friends’ explored what might have happened on ‘The Brady Bunch’ if Mike and Carol had run out for a pack of smokes and never come back. “Lots of comedies were influenced by ‘Friends’ -- including ‘Sex in the City’ -- and it may prove to be one of the most ‘re-runable’ series of all time.” --Robert Thompson, Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television, Syracuse University Over a decade, “Friends” has had a lasting impact on both NBC’s fortunes on “Must See TV’ Thursdays as well as on the television landscape in general. Following are some comments regarding the contributions of the Emmy Award-winning comedy from entertainment industry leaders and reporters. “The cast is exceptional but the brilliance of ‘Friends’ lies in its stories and character arcs. Audiences have unconditionally bonded with the choices and details of these characters lives. While always funny and entertaining, it's this connection that gives the show its potent ‘Must See’ punch. “With its tremendous 18-49 success story, every network for the last 10 years has tried to find its own ‘young adult’ signature comedy.
