Clark 1 Maureen Clark Senior Thesis Dr. Paul Schuette 3/24/2019 Girls Just Wanna Have Equality: Sexism in the 1980’s Music Industry By the 1980s, women were finally making their way into the American workforce. One can see that in many aspects of 1980s pop culture from the shoulder pads in women's suits in an attempt to make them appear more masculine and powerful as well as female empowerment movies like “Working Girl”. However, this rise in female empowerment was definity experienced most within the music, where female artist like Madonna to The Go-Go's were dominating the charts and the workplace. Despite the success that they were achieving, however, most women were still struggling to be seen as authentic or genuine, and most importantly they were fighting to be on an equal playing field as men. Webster's Dictionary defines marginalized as: “(of a person, group, or concept) treated as insignificant or peripheral”. Women have always been a marginalized group within the music industry since its conception, just like in almost every aspect of history. However, by the 1980s, women were entering the workforce at a more rapid rate than ever before, this affected every aspect of American culture along with its music. Despite more representation within the workforce, women in music were still often dismissed, despite the fact that many women and girl groups were making some of the most successful music during that decade. One reason for Clark 2 this had to do with the rise of MTV along with the sexism that has always existed in the music industry.

John Walker Moments of Observation Sheldon Museum of Art January 18–July 14, 2019 Introduction and Beer With a Painter: John Walker, Revisited by Jennifer Samet ohn Walker’s recent paintings are about a compression of energy: forms and patterns J locked into one another. There is an urgency to his most recent paintings, a directness that is about that relationship between a person and a place, and the impulse to record that relationship through mark making. It is symbolized by how the forms lock into one another: the penetration of earth and shallow water. I think about the painting by Cezanne, The Bay of Marseilles, Seen from L’Estaque, which is also about water and shore locking into one another like mirroring, perfect jigsaw puzzle pieces. For more than fifteen years, Walker has turned his attention and gaze to Seal Point, Maine, where he lives and works. But in the newest paintings, Walker pares down his formal vocabulary to elements like patterns of zigzag lines, painterly, irregular grids, oval-shaped forms and dots. They are abstractions, but they are also landscape paintings that turn the genre on its head. They are oriented vertically, rather than the horizontal format we traditionally code as landscape. The horizon line is pushed to the uppermost portion of the canvas so that only a thin band of form suggests sky, clouds, sun or moon. Instead, Walker focuses on the patterns that form when earth and water meet. And in this area of Maine, the inlets and bays are as much about mud as they are about water.

TRAIN - DAY 1 DARKNESS - NOW The beautiful CHIMING SOUNDS OF SPACE TRAVEL through the COSMOS... DOTS OF LIGHT whiz past our face. They could be stars at lightspeed, or... SUBWAY LIGHTS FLICKER ON - in a flash we see PALE, SULLEN FACES, riding into a bleak future, and hear the INDUSTRIAL CLATTER. It's dark, claustrophobic, obscure... the rhythmic beat of track and wheel-clicks engulf us. The lights flicker back on and hold as we see a half dozen SOLDIERS in BROWN CAMO, steel- eyed, prepared for whatever may be at the end of the TUNNEL. ZERO IN on TWO: KABLE, 30-something, roughneck... focused, determined; eyes burning with internalized emotion... ... and SANDRA, late 20s, undeniably hot but tough as hell - both are in shackles & cuffs, being roughly transported through underground tunnels, knocked and shoved around. Uniformed GUARDS roam the train, looking pissed off - their swagger seems to mask FEAR. KABLE is meditating, or exhausted - hard to tell. The GIRL makes eye contact w/ him. SANDRA Sandra.
