Celebrating 40 years of EFIL VIENNA - AUSTRIA 2011 is a special year in the history of EFIL. Forty years ago, at the AFS World Congress in Lake Mohonk (USA) in 1971, the by-laws of a new European federa- tion were approved and AFS Europa was created. Its first General Assembly took place a year later in Birgitz, Austria. In 1975, our organisation ocially changed its name into the European Federation for Intercultural Learning (EFIL). Last week, in Vienna, at our 2011 General Assembly, attended by delegates of all 27 member organisations of EFIL, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our Federation. It was a very special moment, when for the ocial opening of the General Assembly, the first ever Chair of the EFIL Board, Fritz Otti, took the stage. Then Roberto Runo took all present on a walk down memory lane, starting on 4 November 1964 in Torino, Italy, when at an informal meeting a group of young and very idealistic AFS volunteers for the first time talked about AFS cooperation in Europe. The walk through 40 years of history took us to the 1970s when AFS Europa became EFIL and intercultural learning was put on the 2 table. In the 1980s there were a widening focus and expanded tasks of the Federation, followed by a decade of challenges in the 1990s, to today's EFIL with a strong membership and stable secretariat and board, enjoying in- creased visibility and credibility. Roberto’s talk was spiced with live and video-taped testimonials from several prominent people, including some who have helped shape the Federation and have played a role of high relevance in the life of EFIL. We like to thank Heinz Kröll, Fritz Otti, Inge Van Gaal, Urs-Rainer von Arx, Gabriella Battaini, Elisabeth Hardt and Ulrike Lunacek for their much appreciated contributions to Rob- erto’s walk down memory lane. Two Board members stepped down: Martha Eiriks- dottir from Iceland, and Anett Deaver-Miklos from Hungary. Martha and Anett have served respectively three and two terms on the EFIL Board, and their contributions have been very highly valued by the other Board members and by the EFIL network at large. The EFIL Board consists of seven members, serving two-year terms (renewable).     This book provides a unique and intriguing insight into current debates concerning the relationship between nation and state Jordan Paul as well as the political management of international image in today’s Europe through an examination of debates on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Europe is a con- tested construct and its boundaries are subject to redefinition. This work aims to advance critical thinking about contempo- rary nation branding and its relationship to, and influence on, Paul Jordan nation building. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism.     IHP news 437 : “We are a world in pieces” (22 September 2017) The weekly International Health Policies (IHP) newsletter is an initiative of the Health Policy unit at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Dear Colleagues, For a brief moment, we thought Trump 2.0 had finally arrived, but after his UNGA speech from this week in New York, we realize we might have to dig up some of the irrational numbers of our younger days to label different Trump-versions. In a deeply philosophical speech, Donald was clearly inspired by Guterres’ assessment, ‘We are a world in pieces’. Well. In this intro, we’d like to focus instead on last week’s GBD2016 SDG (health) study, and more in particular on Figure 1 which features for all countries in the world info on (37) health related SDG indicators, as well as an SDG health index. A well-crafted index, no doubt, but perhaps a little complicated - my multivariate/imputing/index constructing days are a while ago now. I can only imagine what it’ll take to also fully incorporate the ‘planetary health paradigm’ in the construction of the index – a milky way of health related indicators, no doubt. Anyway, in an era of fake news, never-ending ideological framing but also relentless benchmarking, we see quite some potential in this table, even if the methodological hocus pocus behind the index is beyond you. This table is pure gold if you want to boost interest for global health at the annual UNGA meeting in New York, and among global citizens.

    Wild dances and dying wolves: simulation, essentialization, and national identity at the Eurovision Song Contest ABSTRACT This paper examines Eurovision as a site for the public representation of the nation and explores the tendency towards simulation in such representations. The contest’s transnational audience and implication in commercial practices create pressures towards representing the nation through simplified, well-known images. A critique of globalization from south-east Europe argues that cultural production from marginalized countries which emphasizes local distinctiveness is a sign of structural inequality. This critique is tested against representational strategies from Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. Eurovision is then related to tourism through an analysis of the representation of the Mediterranean in Eurovision performances, which reflect symbolic hierarchies constructed by travel writing since the Enlightenment. Finally, the paper considers the overarching representational power exerted by host states. Key words: Eurovision Song Contest, popular music, folklore, national identity, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Ukraine Word count: 9, 235 words including notes and references This paper seeks to explore the tendency towards simulation in contemporary public representations of the nation through a historical account of the representation of national tradition in the Eurovision Song Contest since 2004. Eurovision offers two forms of opportunity for nations to be represented: the production of a live performance (and often a promotional video) by each competitor, and the promotion of the host city and country on the part of the state broadcaster organizing the event. This paper contends that the nature of the Eurovision audience (with viewers in more than 40 countries inside and outside Europe) and the commercial practices in which Eurovision is implicated create pressures towards public representations which play on simplified, well-known images of a country or region.

Immers, het festival is het enige internationale televisieprogramma wat al bijna even oud is als het medium zelf en biedt daarom tal van invalshoeken en aanknopingspunten om mediastudenten te confronteren met het steeds veranderende medialandschap. Uiteraard wil ik na het afronden van deze scriptie een aantal mensen bedanken. Allereerst is dat mijn begeleidster, mevrouw Sonja de Leeuw. De vele besprekingen met haar gedurende het schrijven van deze scriptie waren steeds zeer verhelderend en haar vakkundige commentaar heeft deze scriptie absoluut naar een hoger niveau getild. This manual aims to provide an overview by introducing the key people and key institutions. It starts with a summary of core facts about Sweden. It looks at the packed timetable of the Swedish EU Presidency and the many issues on its agenda – including EU enlargement and visa liberalisation for the Western Balkan states. As background to one of the most intensive EU presidencies in recent years the manual describes the Swedish scene; the most important interest groups, the key government institutions, the current government, parliament and the main political parties and the key think-tanks. It looks at the country‟s mix of economic liberalism and welfare policies. It offers an overview of the policy debates on the EU, on future enlargement and the Western Balkans. Space is also given to the media landscape; TV, radio and print media and the internet-based media. As the British academic Timothy Garton Ash has recently written: “Talking here to a leading figure in the upcoming Swedish presidency of the EU, one understands what a hectic circus it will be in the last few months of 2009.” Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has commented on the government‟s intensive presidency planning: “Sometimes things turn out like the John Lennon song: „Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans‟.” The prime minister added: “Planning is important, but things seldom turn out the way you intended.” Any debate in a vibrant democracy is characterised by a range of views.

V Slo­ veniji je SDK doslej prejela 576 prijav, na Gorenjskem jih je približno 70, kar pomeni, da bodo imeli inšpektorji ogromno dela. Pri Službi družbenega knjigovodstva v Ljubljani se je na­ SDK ima osem inšpektorjev, za temeljit pregled podjetja pa in­ dalo 576 prijav o nezakonitem lastninjenju, pri tem pa je zani- špektor potrebuje približno tri tedne. Jjv podatek, da je bilo ob koncu lanskega leta v Sloveniji že Komisija državnega zbora za spremljanje in nadzor lastnin­ '215 podjetij v mešani lasti. Po mesecu dni bodo inšpektorji skega preoblikovanja družbene lastnine, ki jo vodi Izidor Rejc, ^DK odšli na teren, saj je 5. maj rok, da prijave začno obrav­ je pozvala vse državljane, ki vedo za primere nezakonitega navati. Medtem pa bodo morali v državnem zboru sprejeti še prisvajanja družbene lastnine, da to prijavijo ustreznim orga­ berila za revizijo. nom. Komisija pa bo državnemu zboru predlagala spremembo zakona o lastninskem preoblikovanju podjetij tako, da bi bila Na Gorenjskem je prijav veliko, Cilka Habjan, vodja in- revizija možna tudi po preteku tega roka, saj komisija meni, da Pekcije na kranjski SDK nam je povedala, da jih je že pribli- bo do nezakonitega laftninjenja lahko prihajalo tudi po uvelja­ *n° 70 in da jih potemtakem čaka ogromno dela.
