A Numerical Taxonomy of the Genus Rosularia (Dc.) Stapf from Pakistan and Kashmir

STAPF FROM PAKISTAN AND KASHMIR GHULAM RASOOL SARWAR* AND MUHAMMAD QAISER Centre for Plant Conservation, University of Karachi, Karachi-75270, Pakistan Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, Pakistan Abstract Numerical analysis of the taxa belonging to the genus Rosularia (DC.) Stapf was carried out to find out their phenetic relationship. Data from different disciplines viz. general, pollen and seed morphology, chemistry and distribution pattern were used. As a result of cluster analysis two distinct groups are formed. Out of which one group consists of R. sedoides (Decne.) H. Ohba and R. alpestris A. Boriss. while other group comprises R. adenotricha (Wall. ex Edgew.) Jansson ssp. adenotricha , R. adenotricha ssp. chitralica, G.R. Sarwar, R. rosulata (Edgew.) H. Ohba and R. viguieri (Raym.-Hamet ex Frod.) G.R. Sarwar. Distribution maps of all the taxa, along with key to the taxa are also presented. Introduction studied the genus Rosularia and indicated that the genus is polyphyletic. Mayuzumi & Ohba (2004) analyzed the Rosularia is a small genus composed of 28 species, relationships within the genus Rosularia. According to distributed in arid or semiarid regions ranging from N. different workers Rosularia is polyphyletic. Africa to C. Asia through E. Wendell S. (Woody) Minnich 2021 Woody, as he is commonly known, grew up in the Mojave Desert and has had an attraction to desert plants and animals since the early 1950’s. He has been involved with the cactus and succulent world for over 52 years, as a grower, field explorer, club and organization leader, writer, photographer, lecturer and presenter. Having been a speaker all over the world, Woody is most often associated with giving presen- tations on his field work from the places he has traveled, such as: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Madagascar, Mexico, Namibia, New Zealand, Peru, Socotra, South Africa, the United States and Yemen. To date, this makes 128 major trips. He is also recognized for having operated the nursery Cactus Data Plants since 1975. Woody’s show quality plants were often considered one of the stan- dards for staging and horticultural achievement. His favorite genera include: Adenium, Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, Copiapoa, Cyphostemma, Fouquieria, Gymnocalycium, Lithops, Mammillaria, Melo- cactus, Pachypodium, Turbinicarpus, Uebelmannia, and Pachycauls in general. He has published numerous articles and reviews in various journals (CSSA) and his photography is featured in many books including; “The Copiapoa” by Schulz, “The Mammillaria Handbook” by Pil- beam, “The Cactus Lexicon” By Hunt and Charles, as well as many others. -

Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. Based on recent phylogenetic and morphological studies in Crassulaceae family, genus Prometheum was considered as independent genus. So far, two species viz. P. pilosum (under Sedum pilosum), and P. sempervivoides (under S. sempervivoides) has been reported from Iran. These two species and the new report are specific to mountains regions and they mostly occur at elevation above 2000 m.s.l. in the northwest of Iran (West and East Azerbaijan provinces). A short discussion on the taxonomic history of the genus Prometheum and the relative species, description, distribution, illustration, ecology and a key for existing three Iranian species is provided. Abstract: The use of DNA sequence data in plant systematics has brought us closer than ever to formulating well- founded hypotheses about phylogenetic relationships, and phylogenetic research keeps on revealing that plant genera as traditionally circumscribed often are not monophyletic. Here, we assess the monophyly of all genera of vascular plants found in Germany. Using a survey of the phylogenetic literature, we discuss which classiications would be consistent with the phylogenetic relationships found and could be followed, provided monophyly is accepted as the primary criterion for circumscribing taxa. We indicate whether and which names are available when changes in ge- neric assignment are made (but do not present a comprehensive review of the nomenclatural aspects of such names). Among the 840 genera examined, we identiied c. 140 where data quality is suiciently high to conclude that they are not monophyletic, and an additional c. 20 where monophyly is questionable but where data quality is not yet suicient to reach convincing conclusions. While it is still iercely debated how a phylogenetic tree should be trans- lated into a classiication, our results could serve as a guide to the likely consequences of systematic research for the taxonomy of the German lora and the loras of neighbouring countries. -

Phytosociological studies on high-moun- tain plant communities of the South Anatolian Taurus Mountains, 4. - The present paper deals with the high-mountain vegetation of Sandras Dağı, a fairly isolated main range in the SW Anatolian Taurus, Turkey, which is largely composed of peridotite rock and stands out for its rich endemic flora. Critically reviewing the phytosociological accounts on this topic, it propos- es a classification scheme for the serpentinophytic vegetation in a wider sense. Three associa- tions are described as new to science. While the Muscari sandrasici-Polygonetum karacae (meltwater and snow-bed community) fits in spite of its many local serpentinophytes into the Thlaspion papillosi alliance (Trifolio-Polygonetalia), the zonal mesophytic to xerophytic vege- tation could hitherto not be classified satisfactorily. As a solution, the serpentinophytic Thuryion capitatae (Astragalo-Brometalia) of the Cilician Taurus is expanded in geographical and diagnostic respects, to accommodate also the stands as far West as Sandras Dağı. Here, they can be grouped into a Genistetum sandrasicae and an Odontarrheno masmenaeae-Ebenetum pisidicae. All communities are characterised by means of life form spectra, chorotype spectra and dispersal biological spectra. -

The results showed that the presence of tanniniferous storage cells in stems and leaves, distinct xylem vessels in stems, and the shape of peduncle cross sections, were taxonomically informative evidence, and isolated Phedimus from the other studied taxa of Sedum s.l., whereas hairy leaves and peduncles containing starch storage cells were identified asPrometheum and Hylotelephium respectively. In addition, the current anatomical evidence confirmed the alliance of 2 sections ofSedum and Epeteium within Sedum sensu stricto. The result of numerical analysis (including 31 qualitative and quantitative anatomical characters) supported complete separation of the fourallied genera and revealed significant influence of anatomical traitsin taxonomy ofSedum s.l. Three decades of molecular phy- logenetic work have provided evidence for the non-monophyly of Sedum and many more of the 30 genera of Crassulaceae subfam. Sempervivoideae. In this study, we present a broadly sampled and dated molecular phylogeny of Sempervivoideae including 80% of all infrageneric taxa described in Sedum as well as most other genera of the subfamily. We used sequences of one nuclear (ITS) and three plastid markers (matK, rps16, trnL-trnF). The five major lineages of Sempervivoideae (i.e., Telephium clade, Petrosedum clade, Sempervivum/Jovibarba, Aeonium clade, Leucosedum plus Acre clades) were resolved as successive sister to each other in the phylo- genetic analysis of the plastid markers, while in the ITS phylogeny the Petrosedum clade is the closest relative of the Aeonium clade. Our dating analysis of ITS suggests that Sempervivoideae diversified rapidly throughout the Paleocene and Eocene, possibly in the area of the former Tethys and Paratethys archipelago.
