Chairmen’s Welcome Tonight we ask, “How does your garden grow?” The question seems apropos during this season of tremendous change and growth at Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden. The recent completion of an updated strategic plan for the Gardens under new Executive Director Tabitha Schmidt, and the current Capital Campaign, led by Eric Tschanz, will pave the way for Powell Gardens’ future and enable the Gardens to better serve an even broader community. If you are here tonight, it is because you have been moved in some way by the magic of Powell Gardens, you appreciate how special it is to Kansas City, and you want to help it grow. Thank you. Every ticket purchased and table sponsored, every hard-to-find plant and one-of-kind experience on which you bid, helps to provide critical funding for youth education at the Gardens, making it possible to expand and enhance initiatives to teach children about healthy living, STEM subjects, growing plants, and more. With your support, Powell Gardens can continue to grow these efforts, becoming the region’s leader in botanical education and providing even more children with unique learning experiences in the Heartland Harvest Garden, the nation’s largest edible landscape. Our honorary chair, Alan Branhagen, left an indelible mark on the Gardens during more than 20 years as Director of Horticulture. Tonight, we show our appreciation for his manifold contributions to Powell Gardens and celebrate his legacy here, including tireless work throughout the years sourcing the rare and unique plants that make this an auction unlike any other. So, how does your garden grow? With superb staff and true-blue volunteers; with an event committee beyond compare; with friends who give and friends who bid; we thank you, one and all. This 12-acre Garden illustrates the journey of food from seed to plate in a natural setting. Last year, more than 4,000 students benefited from grade-appropriate lessons that lead them through the basics of planting seeds, performing maintenance, harvesting food, preparing and eating food fresh from the garden, and composting the waste. Maintaining this living classroom at Powell Gardens means there are weeds to pull, companion plants to introduce, insects to control, vehicles and tools to service, grass to cut, and seeds to plant, grow and harvest. YOU make all of this possible with your generous gifts tonight. FUND-A-NEED The Under a Blue Moon Fund-a-Need portion of our program honors Alan Branhagen, former Director of Horticulture for more than 20 years. We pay tribute to Alan as tonight’s Honorary Chair. In this role, we invited him to identify a place at Powell Gardens that has meaning to him. His response was not a place, but “Plants, Plants, Plants.” With this in mind, we ask you to support tonight’s Fund-a-Need and the plants in the Gardens that Alan helped create, such as the Island Garden, Fountain Garden, Conifer Garden, Heartland Harvest Garden, and the Magnolia Collection. Your Fund-a-Need donation also will help provide for plants and their care for all of the collections throughout Powell Gardens. Perhaps silver bells and cockle shells, for Mary made all the difference, But these gardens, my friends, need just one thing, and that is your beneficence.
