Surviving with Spirituality: An Analysis of Scientology in a Neoliberal World Abstract The neoliberal system has expanded fertile ground for markets to produce and distribute spiritual commodities. This paper examines how the Church of Scientology profits by selling spiritual goods to the modern neoliberal consumer. To accumulate data, I conducted interviews and participated in various rituals at the Church of Scientology in St. Paul, Minnesota. I outline and examine the data in four sections: the initiation process of the latent member, their consumption patterns in the Church, social interactions between members, and how these interactions bridge the Church into the public arena. I conclude that the Church is a market institution that promotes neoliberal ideology. Mayor December 10, 2016 Dr. Christine Johnson and Dr. Neal Ishihara 801 McLean Drive Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 Over the past year, there has been a great deal of disagreement between us over my proposal to collaboratively partner with the Central Skagit Library District. During that time, I have consistently encouraged all parties to stick to the issues as we discuss the merits or shortcomings of the City's proposal and any subsequent agreements arising from it. I am sorry to say, that has not always happened. Letters to the Editor and comments, both public and private, have turned from discussions on policy to personal and sometimes vicious attacks; some direct and some implied. I greatly value my relationship with our wonderful schools. Your open opposition has done much to wound me in that respect. Teachers and staff whisper their support in the hallways but they add, "It's very uncomfortable now." "Why?" I wonder. When you wrote to the Skagit Valley Herald, "Do not be deceived by the Mayor's proposal...", you painted me as a "deceptive" person. In your email of April 22, to City Council, you criticized my proposal as "likely to weaken services...especially for children..." citing your analysis of "the situation in the Sedro-Woolley School District." Christine has crossed the line between elected official and private citizen. As Mayor of our City, I am Mayor wherever I go, and whatever I say is heard in that context. -
Scientology: Religion Or Racket?

Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi The name Scientology (a copyrighted and registered trademark) brings to mind a wide array of claims, observations, impressions, findings, and documents, reflecting a complex and controversial history. The religion/not religion debate over various groups and organizations, prominent in the Western media over the past thirty years, has usually presented the public and politicians with a religion versus "sect" or "cult" dichotomy. The classification issue in this article is framed differently. Hopkins (1969) offered us the terms of the debate in the bluntest and most direct way when he asked in the title of an article in Christianity Today more than thirty years ago "Scientology: Religion or racket?" Read today, the Hopkins article sounds naive and charitable, but this question still stands before us, and yet deserves an answer. The question of whether any particular organization matches our definition of religion is not raised very often, and this is true for both old and new religions (cf. Beit- Hallahmi, 1989; Beit-Hallahmi, 1998; Beit-Hallahmi & Argyle, 1997). That is because there is no shortage of religious behaviors and groups whose authenticity is never in doubt, but in some rare cases, authenticity and sincerity are put into question. Regarding Scientology, we have two competing claims before us. The first, espoused by most NRM scholars, as well as some legal and administrative decisions, asserts that Scientology is a religion, perhaps misunderstood and innovative, but a religion nevertheless, thus worthy of our scholarly attention. The second, found in most media reports, some government documents in various countries, and many legal and administrative decisions, states that Scientology is a business, often given to criminal acts, and sometimes masquerading as a religion. -

5 Celebrities Keeping Scientology Working Stephen A. Kent L. Ron Hubbard was prescient with his realization about the impact that stars and celebrities had upon ordinary people in mass culture. People imitated and emulated them, often modeling aspects of their own lives according to what actors did on stage or how they lived their lives off-camera. Statements that he made about the celebrities in the entertainment industry fostered among some of them an inflated feeling of self-importance, portraying them as art- ists who shaped the development of civilization. The artists who absorbed this inflated view of their contributions did so as they socialized into the subcultural world that Hubbard created, in which they equated civilizational advance with furthering Scientology’s influence. Serving Scientology, there- fore, was a means by which they felt that they were contributing to society’s advancement, and if by doing so, they caught the eye of a producer looking to fill a part in a film, then ever so much the better. This chapter examines the way that Scientology utilizes celebrities in the organization’s overall effort to “keep Scientology working.” I kept in mind the overall description of elites that appears in resource mobilization theory, since these celebrities have the flexible time, resources, and media connec- tions that allows them to open areas nationally or internationally in which they can proselytize. More importantly, however, might be the significance of having celebrity status itself, because that status carries with it forms of unique, valuable assets that its possessors can use to influence others in soci- ety. -

$ The Journal of CESNUR $ The Visible Expansion of the Church of Scientology and Its Actors Bernadette Rigal-Cellard Université Bordeaux Montaigne [email protected] ABSTRACT: This report addresses the issue of the current expansion of the Church of Scientology. It is based on field research mostly conducted from 2016 to 2018 in various countries, in Clearwater, and in the Los Angeles area in particular: visits of a great number of missions, churches, office buildings and foundations; interviews with active Scientologists; participation in interfaith meetings. I identified four areas that demonstrate best the expansion of the Church and deserve analysis: 1. The most visible expansion: several examples of real estate acquisitions and renovations are presented as well as their social and symbolic function. 2. How does membership keep pace with such material expansion? 3. The Tech, or the Word of Lafayette Ron Hubbard (LRH) as the source of Scientology: the ever-increasing dissemination activities and the Preservation of the Tech are analyzed as major religious undertakings. 4. The social interactions of the Church through its foundations and its interfaith programs are presented from my own perspective. KEYWORDS: Scientology, L. Introduction This study of the recent developments of the Church of Scientology was triggered by my hearing that Druzes in the North of Israel were taking Scientology courses. Having spent time among the Druzes of the Chouf in Lebanon, I was most surprised to hear that such an ancient and secretive community, which parceled out rather sparingly the tenets and practices of its religion, could be opened to another world view, one so totally modern and western. -

Al surfend op het internet kwam ik terecht op een website waar je een gratis persoonlijkheidstest kon afnemen, die nadien door een team van experts grondig onder de loep zou worden genomen. Die kon je enkel aanvragen door je naam, adres en telefoonnummer op te geven. In plaats van een persoonlijkheidstest kreeg ik een brief toegestuurd vanwege de Kerk van Scientology, die me uitnodigde naar hun dichtstbijzijnde afdeling – in Brussel – te gaan, om daar de test af te nemen. Ik besloot hier niet op te reageren. Voor mij persoonlijk was het woord Kerk hierin doorslaggevend, gezien mijn atheïstische overtuiging. Enkele weken later kreeg ik een telefoontje van iemand van diezelfde Kerk: een vriendelijke dame die me vroeg waarom ik niet had gereageerd op de brief en me daarop nog eens uitnodigde een gratis persoonlijkheidstest af te nemen in Brussel. Ook hier ging ik niet op in. Later kreeg ik af en toe nog een brief toegestuurd vanwege de Kerk van Scientology die me uitnodigde om eens een kijkje te gaan nemen in hun afdeling in Brussel. Nieuwsgierig ging ik op zoek naar informatie over die organisatie, vooral met behulp van het internet. De informatie die ik daar vond, was heel uiteenlopend: van heel sterke 'anti- sites' tot 'pro-sites' die reclame maakten voor Scientology. -

La visibile espansione della Chiesa di Scientology e i suoi protagonisti Bernadette Rigal-Cellard Universitè Bordeaux Montaigne [email protected] RIASSUNTO: Questo rapporto tratta la questione dell'attuale espansione della Chiesa di Scientology. Si basa su ricerche svolte sul campo, per lo più condotte dal 2016 al 2018 in vari paesi, a Clearwater e in particolare nell'area di Los Angeles: visite a un gran numero di missioni, chiese, edifici amministrativi e fondazioni; interviste con Scientologist attivi; partecipazione a incontri interreligiosi. Ho individuato quattro aree che meglio dimostrano l'espansione della Chiesa e che meritano un'analisi: 1. L'espansione più visibile: vengono qui presentati diversi esempi di acquisizioni e ristrutturazioni immobiliari e la loro funzione sociale e simbolica. 2. In che modo gli associati tengono il passo con tale espansione materiale? La Tech, o Parola di Lafayette Ron Hubbard (LRH) come sorgente di Scientology: le sempre crescenti attività di divulgazione e la Preservazione della Tecnologia sono analizzate come grandi imprese religiose. 4. Rona Hubbarda (1911–1986), założyciela Kościoła Scjentologicznego – chyba jednego z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych nowych ruchów religijnych. Applied Scholastics (ApS) rozpoczęła działalność od szeregu projektów, których głów nym, wciąż aktualnym, celem było promowanie i rozwijanie skutecznych programów edukacyjnych dla nauczycieli, trenerów biznesu, edukatorów, ro dziców, dzieci i ludzi we wszystkich obszarach życia, potrzebujących „napra wy nawyków uczenia się tychże osób w celu zwiększenia osobistej aktywności, skutecznego uczenia się”. Podstawą metodologiczną działania ApS stała się tzw. Study Tech – technologia uczenia się, która pozwala „osiągnąć sukces w dowolnej dziedzinie wiedzy i zdobyć umiejętność wykorzystania z zastoso waniem tej wiedzy”. Ale czy tylko edukacyjne cele obiera owa odnoga Kościoła Hubbarda? Czy naprawdę edukatorzy ApS nie mają innych intencji i dążeń? Słowa kluczowe: Szkolnictwo Stosowane (ApS), Study Tech, bariery w ucze niu się, Kościół Scjentologiczny, edukacja, L. Ron Hubbard, nowe ruchy religijne Doktryna prawie każdego ruchu religijnego przechodzi przez szereg etapów, ewoluuje, zmierzając do inżynierii społecznej, by móc krzewić swoje własne poglądy nie tylko w gronie swoich adeptów, często rela tywnie wąskim, lecz także pośród niewtajemniczonych 1. Aby rozszerzyć zakres oddziaływania, w scjentologii zostały wypracowane potężne za soby korporacyjne, które umożliwiły lansowanie swojej religijnej nauki nie tylko w środowisku osób poszukujących transcendencji, lecz także na płaszczyźnie ochrony zdrowia, edukacji, zarządzania, spraw charytatyw nych, praw człowieka, sportu 2 .
