Dunajec River Raft Trip +48 22 492 08 99 [email protected] Dunajec River Raft Trip Dunajec raft trip is one of the most popular Polish mountain attractions. The reasons are: 1. it is not far from Krakow and Zakopane 2. it is completely safe (the slow river is only a little more than 1 meter deep and each raft has its guide with a pole) 3. it leads through the Pieniny National Park – the river is flanked by tall limestone rock formations of great scenic beauty. Duration: 8 hours Availability: from mid April to the edn of Departures from: Krakow October Price per person Private group with more than 8 participants - upon request. We reccomend to wear a raincoat - weather like to change in the mountains - and comfortable shoes. It lasts two to three hours, depending on the water level in the river. 1.

  • Pieniny- the Great Little Mountains
Pieniny- The Great Little Mountains JERZY W. GAJEWSKI On the map of Poland, the Pieniny Mountains are over-shadowed by other mountains situated in the south of the country, along the Czechoslovakian border. However, the Pieninys with their pointed rocky hills provide a contrast to the landscape of the surrounding Flysch Beskidy Mountains. The landscape and natural beauty of the Pieninys have brought about their great popularity with tourists, especially ramblers, resulting in the establishment of the first Polish National Park there. In general, the Pieniny Mountains cover the area between the BiaTka River in the west (its source is situated above the White Water Valley on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains), and the Rozdziele Pass in the east, where they border on the Beskid Sadecki Mountains. The western part of the Pieninys, which culminate on Zar (879m), is called Pieniny Spiskie, because the surrounding territory - with its interesting villages, architecture, costumes and cusroms of the people - is joined to the Spisz region (part of this area is situated on the Slovak side, roo). This is where Dt;bno, the village with the famous St Michael's Church, is situated. This wooden church was built in the 15th century and its interior is covered with unusual and rare wall-paintings. 0 wonder Dt;bno church is a goal for most tourists who go to the Pieniny Mountains. The eastern part of the Pieninys, although being the highest, is called MaTe Pieniny (Little Pieniny). It culminates on the Wysoka (105 2m), at the foot of which are four conservation areas with short but beautiful gorges (the most famous is called Homole).

The proposed geopark includes the central, most interesting part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt and the adjacent areas of the Central Carpathian Paleogene and Western Flysch Carpathians. The specificity of the Pieniny Klippen Belt is that it is a unique area with a complex geological structure resulting from its multi-stage history. The geopark’s core belongs to the Polish Pieniny National Park (Pieniński Park Narodowy) and its Slovak equivalent the Pieninský Narodný Park. The primary task in the framework of Geopark project will be an inventory and valorization of geosites. The authors attempt to provide the review of the most important and significant geotouristic attraction within the proposed. The selected objects include The Rogoźnik Rock, the Białka River water gap at Krempachy, Snozka Pass, Wżar Mountain, the Czorsztyn Castle, the Red Monastery (Červený Kláštor - Czerwony Klasztor), the Dunajec River Gorge, Szczawnica, the Zaskalnik Waterfall, and the Homole Gorge. CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Robert Wiluś Institute of Socio-Economical Geography and Spatial Organization University of Łódź The Natural History of Poland 1. Location Poland is a Central European country that lies at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe. Poland shares borders with Lithuania, Bela- rus and Ukraine to the east; Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south; Germany to the west, and in the north Poland is bordered by Russia and the Baltic Sea. Poland’s surface area of 312.685 sq km ranks eighth in Eu- rope (larger European countries being Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain and Sweden). Poland is almost an unbroken plain and is roughly circle-like. It measures about 650 km across (both east-west and north-south). Poland is one of nine Baltic Sea States and occupies more than 500 km of the southern Baltic coast. In the south, Poland occupies a strip of the Carpathian and Sudeten Mountains (belonging to the Czech Massif); in the west – the eastern part of the Central European Lowland; and, in the east, the West Russian (or East European) Plain and (North) Ukrainian Upland move in. 2. Topography Poland is a country with varied topography. It can boast almost all Eu- ropean landscape types – the mountains, uplands, lowlands and seacoast. Yet the average elevation of Poland is 173 m, which is more than 100 m 16 Robert Wiluś below the European average. This means that Poland is a markedly flat country. Areas up to 200 m above sea level comprise 75% of the territory, and regions of up to 300 m above sea level – nearly 92%.

  • In the Footsteps of Wallachs 1 in the Footsteps of Wallachs
In the footsteps of Wallachs 1 In the footsteps of Wallachs Wallachs . Pastoral people who reached the Polish territory around the 15th century, bringing with them not only farming art of pasturing sheep in difficult, mountain area, but also rich culture, living till this day. The migration of Wallachians ran from the Bieszczady Mountains, through the Low Beskids, the Sądecki Beskids, the Gorce Mountains and the Podtatrze Region, through the Żywiec Beskids, the Silesian Beskids and further on to the west, towards Moravia. This study is the proposal of 15 thematic routes running through the areas closely connected with the development of transhumance. Together they comprise a comprehensive, cross-cutting image of pastoral heritage, for which mountain areas are a background - a context, which gains additional, intangible value thanks to these routes. The project „Trail of Wallachians Culture" is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. GORCE: Ochotnica – far, far away... Walking in the footsteps of Wallachs in Poland starts just like any other engaging story. Once upon a time, in a far off land... In the area of Gorce, there was a primeval forest – wild, dark and dangerous. Those lands have remained untouched by a man for a long time, until the 18th century, when the Kings and Princes of Poland started to conduct intensive colonisation activities. The beginnings of existence of the Ochotnica village, the oldestWallachian village, dates back to 1416 when Dawid Wooch received a consent for establishing a town from King Wadysaw Jagieo. Settlements created on the basis of the Wallachian law of, were established on the so-called “raw root”.

Received: 25 January 2018; accepted: 10 February 2018 Abstract: The Pieniny Klippen Belt in Poland marks the Central Carpathian-North European plate suture zone. The strictly tectonic present-day confines of the Pieniny Klippen Belt are characterized as (sub)vertical faults and shear zones. A strong reduction in the space of the original sedimentary basins took place. The strike-slip-bound- ed tectonic blocks, thrust units, toe-thrusts and olistostromes are mixed together, resulting in the present-day mélange character where individual tectonic units are difficult to distinguish. The sedimentary rocks of the Pieniny Klippen Belt were deposited in the paleogeographic realm known as the Alpine Tethys that was divided into two basins separated by the Czorsztyn Ridge. The accretionary prism formed in front of the advancing Alcapa (Central Carpathians) terrane had overridden the Czorsztyn Ridge during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene. The destruction of the Czorsztyn Ridge supplied huge amounts of coarse-clastic ma- terial, including olistoliths, into the Magura Basin during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene. The rotation of the Alcapa caused the strike-slip motions which led to the deformation of the previously creat- ed nappes and development of the flower structure.

Abundance and distribution patterns of owls in Pieniny National Park, Southern Poland. Acta zoologica cracoviensia, 48A(1-2): 21-33. Abstract. Species composition, abundance and distribution of owls Strigiformes in the Pi- eniny National Park were studied during the years 2001-2002. The research area covered 23.25 km2. Seven owl species were recorded. A total of 30-38 territories (16-17 Tawny Owl territories, six Eagle Owl territories, four Long-eared Owl territories, 2-4 Teng- malm’s Owl territories, 2-3 Ural Owl territories, three Pygmy Owl territories and one Lit- tle Owl territory) were found, giving a density of 12.9-16.3 territories per 10 km2. The numbers and density of species in the Pieniny National Park differ from those of other mountainous regions in Poland. The density of the Tawny Owl is significantly higher than other figures given for mountainous areas. The density recorded for the Eagle Owl is the highest in Poland and one of the highest known for this species. A low density is seen for the Ural Owl, indicating a density gradient in the Carpathian Mountains. The Little Owl found here are the only ones presently known in this part of the Polish Carpathians. Authors have presented the hill on the background of Pieniny region as an intricate object where cultural heritage intertwines with natural values. It is also an important testimony to the biological and geological structure, where cultural values are of great significance, as traces of human activity date back to medieval times. Keywords: Fungi; Bryophytes; Plants; Andesite; Nature protection; Biodiversity Introduction Pieniny Klippen Belt, where the eponymous Jarmuta Hill is situated, is a narrow 3-5km (exceptionally 20km) zone on the border of the Outer Western Carpathians and the Inner Western Carpathians, extending in the shape of an arc (roughly about 550 km long) from the vicinity of Vienna in Austria to the mountains of Maramures in Romania. Jarmuta Hill is a small part of Małe Pieniny Range (Little Pieniny) which is located in the Central Europe on the boundary between Poland and Slovakia (Fig.
