A ground-breaking book that takes on skeptics from both sides of the cosmological debate, arguing that science and the Bible are not at odds concerning the origin of the universe. Instead, the integrity of the text was stubbornly maintained and experts were obliged to adopt a position on the truth of the Biblical Scriptures which, for the scientist, is hardly tenable. • OSIS™ 2.1.1 User's Manual
OSIS Users Manual (OSIS Schema 2.1.1) By Patrick Durusau [email protected] On Behalf of the American Bible Society © American Bible Society, 2006 1 Foreword The OSIS Users Manual is the result of years of effort by organizations and individuals who have generously donated their support and time to taking the delivery of the Bible into the 21st century. Its subject is the use of the OSIS schema, a means to put Bibles into the lingua franca of modern computers, XML (Extensible Markup Language). Once a Bible is in XML, effective delivery in whole or part in a variety of formats (print, WWW, cellphones, etc.) and use of Bible portions in a variety of contexts becomes possible for all organizations and individuals. This users manual is a guide to the 2.1.1 version of the OSIS schema. Be aware that the OSIS schema continues to evolve and work on OSIS 2.5 is currently underway. Future changes to the schema will be backwards compatible so any documents prepared following this guide will continue to be valid in the future. The OSIS development team closely studied previous Bible encoding forms, as well as tools for literary encoding in general. By doing this we hope we have avoided some weaknesses, and gained from some strengths, of each one, and we thank the many people who worked on those prior specifications, as well as those who have provided help and feedback in developing OSIS itself, and testing it by encoding large numbers of Biblical and related texts. Users familiar with the Text Encoding Initiative will find OSIS markup quite familiar, because the bulk of the elements we define correspond directly to TEI elements, and almost always have the same name (though often simplified).

  • An Alternative View of Jesus' Divorce Teachings
Articles Home: www.danielrjennings.org/writings An Alternative View Of Jesus’ Divorce Teachings Daniel R. Jennings Matthew 19:9 is commonly regarded as the main teaching verse of Jesus on the issue of divorce and remarriage. As it reads in most modern translations it is understood to teach that upon discovery of adulterous behavior, the innocent spouse may divorce and remarry. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. Mt 19:9NIV2011 Because it seems to offer an exception to Jesus total prohibition of remarriage after a divorce elsewhere (Mk 10:11-12, Lk 16:18, 1Co 7:10-11, 39) it is referred to as the “exception clause”. Although this appears to be the most popular interpretation amongst Evangelicals there is a growing movement within Evangelical Christianity that is opting for an alternative interpretation. This alternative view is sometimes referred to as the “Fornication View” and it is the purpose of this paper to evaluate the evidence that this view is based upon. Brief Explanation Of The Fornication View At the root of the “Fornication View” is the quest for the best way to translate one word in Matthew 19:9, the underlying Greek word that is translated as “sexual immorality” in the NIV2011. That word is porneia and proponents of the Fornication View maintain that it is more correct to translate it as referring to pre-nuptial sexual sin (fornication) in this passage. Thus, whereas the other view understands this passage to reflect something which happens after the wedding, the Fornication View believes it to be referring to something which happens before the marriage ceremony that invalidates the wedding (the age old scenario of a man who marries a woman believing her to be a virgin only to find out after the wedding that she was a fornicator).

BOOK REVIEWS THE NEW TRANSLATIONS OF THE BIBLE. By Ε. H. Robertson. Studies in Ministry and Worship 12. Naperville, HI.: Allenson, 1959. Pp. 190. $2.50. "The Bible translators throughout the world," to whom this book is dedicated, if they take a few hours off to read it, will find the contents both entertaining and thought-provoking. Eleven chapters describe the origin and makers of the Authorized Version, the Revised Version, modern versions be fore Moffatt (with some fascinating pages on Ferrar Fenton's Bible, com pleted in 1903), Moffatt, the Goodspeed Bible, J. B. Phillips, E. V. Rieu (here a broadcast discussion between Phillips and Rieu is reproduced; and one notices that many of Phillips' ideas have been used by the author in earlier pages), the "Plain English" Bible, the Revised Standard Version (which, in the present writer's opinion, is not praised highly enough), Ronald Knox's Bible, and a Jewish translation; then in the last chapter an account is given of the great work now progressing in the non-Roman churches of the United Kingdom under the presidency of C. H. Dodd. As an example of the entertainment which the book provides, here is a passage quoted from Moffatt "containing his best Scoticism—'factor' [for Lk's oikonotnos]" : "There was a rich man who had a factor, and this factor, he found, was accused of mismanaging his property. So he summoned him and said: '... you cannot be factor any longer.' The factor said to himself: 'What am I to do, now that my master is taking the factorship away from me?' " (Lk 16:1-3).
