November 2010, an intrepid group of Neveh Shalom Eastsiders met in a living room near Mt. Tabor to discuss the creation of a little Neveh Shalom East-side action. After much discussion about how to deine “action,” Mizrach: A Neveh Community emerged. Since that initial meeting, this small group has celebrated Shabbat together in a local Eastside home and brought in Havdallah together with the larger Eastside community. Another planning meeting in early February has put some more exciting events on the calendar, including a February Mt. Tabor Shabbat Hike, and the following: • April - Second Night Pesach Seder, April 19th • May – Eastside “Musical” Shabbat • July - Friday night Shabbat service on the Eastside Watch for Mizrach updates on the Neveh Shalom website under www.nevehshalom.org/getinvolved/ mizrach and in the Neveh Shalom weekly e-blasts. We’ll make sure to keep you informed! If any or all of this sounds exciting, keep your eyes peeled to join the “Ivrim” as we cross the “river” to the East! It is illed with history, symbolism and meaning. he more we put into preparing and observing the Mitzvot of Passover, the more purposeful it becomes. For beginners it is diicult to do everything the irst time. However the goal should be to add new pieces each year. Initial preparation often begins soon after Purim; setting the guest list for the Seder and planning to eat up the Hametz (see below) we have in our homes. In the last weeks and days the scouring of the kitchen, the changeover of dishes and purchase of Kosher for Passover foods takes place. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. You will ind below a reference guide for your preparation. PERMITTED AND PROHIBITED FOODS: he Torah prohibits the eating or ownership of Hametz cream cheese, ripened cheeses such as cheddar (hard), (leaven) during Passover. Hametz consists of foods muenster (semi soft), and Camembert (soft), frozen containing any of the basic grains: wheat, barley, rye, oats (uncooked) fruit (with no additives); baking soda. and spelt. (Matzah itself is made from lour, but made with suicient speed so that the dough cannot leaven.) B. he following foods require no Kosher le-Pesach label if purchased Prohibited foods include the following: before or during Pesach: fresh leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers, fruits and vegetables, eggs, fresh cereal, cofees containing cereal ish and fresh meat. derivatives, the ive grains (see above) and all liquids containing ingredients C. he following foods require a Kosher le- Pesach label: or lavors made from grain alcohol. All baked products (matzah, cakes, matzah lour, farfel, Most Ashkenazi authorities have added matzah meal, and any products containing matzah), canned *Kitniot to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and or bottled fruit juices (hese juices are often clariied with peas; however string beans are permitted). Peanuts and peanut kitniot which are not listed among the ingredients.), canned oil are permissible, as peanuts are not actually legumes. Some tuna (since tuna, even when packed in water has often been Ashkenazi authorities permit, while others forbid, the use of le- processed in vegetable broth and/ or hydrolized protein), gumes in a form other than their natural state, for example, corn wine, vinegar, liquor, oils, dried fruits, candy, chocolate sweeteners, corn oil, soy oil. Sephardi authorities permit the lavored milk, ice cream, yogurt and soda. (If it is known that use of all of the foods which the Ashkenazi authorities added to the juices are not clariied with kitniot and the tuna is not the basic list. processed in vegetable oil or hydrolized protein, then they * Some Conservative movement authorities claim that there is need no label.) no legal basis for prohibiting kitniot and they should be permit- ted to all Jews during Passover. D. Liquid and powdered detergents permitted during the year do not need Permitted Foods: a Kosher le-Pesach label. A. he following foods require no Kosher le-Pesach label if purchased prior to Medicine: Passover: unopened packages or Hametz binders are used in many pills. If the medicine containers of natural cofee, sugar, is required for life sustaining therapy, it may be used on Pesach. If it is pure tea (not herbal tea), salt (not iodized); not for life sustaining therapy, some authorities permit, while others pepper, natural spices; frozen fruit juices with no additives, prohibit. In all cases, capsules are preferred to pills. frozen (uncooked) vegetables; milk, butter; cottage cheese;

Power of Attorney Authorizing the Selling of Hametz: Please Detach and Return to the Neveh Shalom Office I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Isaak and/or Rabbi Greenstein to act on my behalf to sell all Hametz possessed by me-knowingly or unknowingly-as defined by Torah and Rabbinic Law, and to lease all places wherein Hametz owned may be found. This transaction will be in effect for the duration of Pesach, which this year begins at sundown on April 18, 2011

To this I hereby affix my signature on this ______day of______, in the year 2011. Signature______Address______City______State______Zip______Phone______Kitchen Preparation

Passover preparation involves cleaning all areas of the house where Hametz may have been brought during the year. Central focus is on the kitchen: counter tops, cabinets, loors, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and toughest of all, the stove. After thorough cleaning, line cabinets that will be used during Passover and counter tops with fresh paper. Table tops should be covered.
