November Newsletter

Kia ora <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the November Friends newsletter where you’ll find important info on our last

Friends event for 2020, a selection of photos from our recent get-together, a couple of upcoming Gallery events and their latest exhibition.

This month’s intro is coming to you from Sam; your newsletter coordinator and social media champion. I really enjoy pulling together the content for this monthly newsletter; updating you on all the going’s on at the Gallery and announcing the great events coordinated by the Friends committee. I’d love to know what you enjoy reading and would like to see more of. Please email me with your feedback.

If you are a Christmas lover like I am, you’ll be starting to prepare for the big day and the festive activities taking place at this time of year. If you need any help with Christmas gift ideas (there’s always someone notoriously hard to buy for on my Christmas list) I highly recommend browsing the Gallery shop for something quirky, unique and different. Check out some of the cool 2021 calendars they have available below, not to mention the

fabulous jewellery, art works and books in store.

Talk again next month, Sam.

Our final Art in the Afternoon for 2020 features special guest speaker, Ellie Smith. She has worked in famous Galleries around the world including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and here at our very own Tauranga Art Gallery.

During her time at the Guggenheim in Venice, Ellie presented a seminar on 'The Man who rivalled Hitler', which investigates the looting of Art by the Nazis during WW2. We are thrilled Ellie has agreed to present her interesting seminar to the Friends, which features photos of famous works by Picasso, Modigliani and many others ‒ a treat for the eyes and the mind!

We'll end the year with bubbles and cake so please RSVP to [email protected] for catering numbers by Wednesday, December 2.

TONY FOMISON: LOST IN THE DARK 21 November 2020 - 21 February 2021

In the late 1960s, dark things began to emerge from Tony Fomison’s paintings. His monsters, misfits, and medical deformities challenged polite society, and explored what it means to be an outsider.

This was a particularly troubled period in Fomison’s life. He had just returned to from travels in Europe and was broke, grappling with addiction, and cynical about society.

Yet the humanity of his grotesque paintings resonated profoundly with many – making him one of the most important painters of his generation.

Tony Fomison: Lost in the Dark is a collaboration between High School students and Te Papa. Students workshopped the theme of ‘otherness’ in Fomison’s work, which helped shape the creative approach.

Developed and Toured by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
