Acknowledgements 44 Page 3 A LETTER TO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS As a found space theatre company, Single Thread believes strongly in the importance of making our work accessible to educators and students. We aim to interpret classical works in innovative ways and also to support new works by Canadian artists. In addition, our focus on immersive productions that explore relevant periods in Canadian history provides teachers with the opportunity to help their students learn and relive the experiences of people and places. The Campbell House Story brings to life the period in York leading up to the Upper Canada Rebellion. Judge William Campbell and his grandson Will clash over their political ideals, the writings of William Lyon Mackenzie, and the subsequent looting of his office that led to the Types Trial. The play is an excellent means of exploring ideas of continuity and change and cause and consequence in the context of freedom of the press, democracy, class divisions, and generational values that relate to History, Social Studies, and Drama. For those who are unable to attend the play in Toronto, a copy of the script can be requested by emailing [email protected]. The script may be used in the classroom as a model for students’ own dramatic re-telling of periods on Canadian history and excerpts from the script may be performed. If a teacher wishes to stage a full production of The Campbell House Story, please contact Single Thread. Teachers and students who are able to attend a performance are eligible for subsidized tickets and are encouraged to participate in a talk back ses- sion with members of the cast and crew. En- joy your exploration of The Campbell House Story! - The Single Thread team Page 4 AN INTRODUCTION TO FOUND-SPACE THEATRE Found Space Theatre is theatre that occurs in any non-traditional theatrical space. It could take place, for example, in a park, a library, or a factory. The possibilities are endless! There can be many reasons for doing a show in a found space instead of a traditional theatre: To immerse the audience more fully in the world of the play To challenge common notions about what theatre is and how it should be done To make theatre accessible to new audiences To present a play in a new way that is connected to a particular space Found space theatre can be set up in many different ways. The audience may sit in chairs as in a traditional theatre but they may be in an unusual space, move around within the space, and even become part of the show! Here are some examples of shows that Single Thread has done in found space: Julius Caesar in a chemistry building on Queen’s University campus where Rome was the name of a pharmaceutical company and the audi- ence was treated like a group on a public tour. General Theatre Etiquette As an audience member, attending a show in a found space can be a totally new experience where you move around, interact with the characters and even participate in the action but some key theatre-going guidelines still ap- ply: Turn off cell phones and any other electronic devices that could distract the performers or other audience members. This means no texting and no headphones. Since you may be moving around the space, stick with your group and pay attention to what’s going on around you! This keeps the show moving smoothly. There will likely be opportunities to interact with the cast but be mind- ful of the other audience members and the flow of the play. It’s prob- ably not a good time to break out that monologue you memorized in drama class.     EC8.9 REPORT FOR ACTION Sustaining the Vibrancy of Campbell House Museum Date: October 2, 2019 To: Economic and Community Development Committee From: General Manager, Economic Development and Culture Wards: 10 - Spadina-Fort York SUMMARY Campbell House Museum is a City-owned building, situated on land leased from Canada Life Assurance Company at the north-west corner of Queen and University Avenue. It is operated by the Sir William Campbell Foundation with oversight by the City-appointed Campbell House Board of Management. Since 1972, the Museum's largest source of operating and capital funds has been The Advocates' Society (TAS). TAS began reducing its support to the Museum in 2018 and will likely provide its final grant in 2020. In response, the Foundation (whose board of directors is composed of TAS members) has proposed winding up its affairs and transferring responsibility for the Museum and the House to the City of Toronto under the Economic Development and Culture Division. This report recommends a different approach to that proposed by TAS to sustain the vibrancy of Campbell House Museum. The recommended approach would have the Foundation continue to exist as a charitable body, with changes made to the composition of its board to replace TAS members with community representatives. The Museum would continue to be governed by the Foundation and the Board of Management with new members. The City would increase its annual grant to replace funding from TAS, and would assume responsibility for capital maintenance and repairs at the Museum.     ''Wants and Privations'': Women and the War of 1812 in Upper Canada GEORGE SHEPPARD* Most accounts of Canada's pre-modern conflicts present women as either heroes or victims. This preliminary investigation of the immediate impact of the War of 1812 reveals that wartime experiences were far more heterogeneous. Many Upper Canadians were inconvenienced by the fighting, primarily because militia service made pioneer fanning more difficult. Hundreds of other residents suffered immensely due to the death and destruction inflicted by particulclr campaigns. A great number of women were affected only marginally by the fighting, however, and some actually benefited from the war.     Pauper Emigration to Upper Canada in the 1830s* by Rainer BAEHRE ** Pauper emigration to the Canadas peaked in the 1830s during the very period in which public concern over poor relief reached a climax in Great Britain. 1 In the mother country "the figure of the pauper, almost forgotten since, dominated a discussion the imprint of which was as powerful as that of the most spectacular events in history". 2 So argues Karl Polanyi. Yet, in general histories of Upper Canada the pauper is referred to only in passing. 3 Could it be that the pauper's role in Upper Canada was larger than has hitherto been assumed?     ARTICLES Lawless Lawyers: Indigeneity, Civility, and Violence HEATHER DAVIS-FISCH On 8 June 1826, young members of the Family Compact—allegedly disguised as “Indians”—raided William Lyon Mackenzie’s York office, smashing his printing press and throwing his types into Lake Ontario, to protest defamatory editorials. This essay investigates how the cultural memory of “Indian” disguise emerged by asking what this memory reveals about the performative and political dynamics of this protest. At first glance, the performance conventions and disciplinary function of the Types Riot allow it to be compared to folk protest traditions such as “playing Indian” and charivari. However, the Types Riot differed from these popular performances because the participants were members of the provincial elite, not protestors outside of the structures of power. The rioters’ choice of how to perform their “civilized” authority—through an act of lawless law legitimated through citations of “Indigenous” authority—demonstrates inherent contradictions in how power was enacted in Upper Canada. Furthermore, by engaging in a performance that resembled charivari, the rioters called their own civility—attained through education, wealth, and political connections—into question by behaving like peasants. The Types Riot demonstrates that the Family Compact’s claim to authority based on its members’ civility—their superior values, education, and social privilege—was backed by the threat of uncivil violence. The riot revealed a contradiction that the Upper Canadian elite would, no doubt, have preferred remained private: that in the settler-colony, gentlemanly power relied upon the potential for “savage” retribution, cited through the rioters’ “Indian” disguises.
