Self Guided Tour
The Toronto Ghosts & Hauntings Research Society Present s… About This Document: Since early October of 1997, The Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society has been collecting Toronto’s ghostly legends and lore for our website and sharing the information with anyone with an interest in things that go bump in the night… or day… or any time, really. If it’s ghostly in nature, we try to stay on top of it. One of the more popular things for a person with a passion for all things spooky is to do a “ghost tour”… which is something that our group has never really offered and never planned to do… but it is something we get countless requests about especially during the Hallowe’en season. Although we appreciate and understand the value of a good guided ghost tour for both the theatrical qualities and for a fun story telling time and as such, we are happy to send people in Toronto to Richard Fiennes-Clinton at Muddy York Walking Tours (who offers the more theatrical tours focusing on ghosts and history, see Image Above Courtesy of Toronto Tourism www.muddyyorktours.com) We do also understand that at Hallowe’en, these types of tours can Self Guided Walking Tour of fill up quickly and leave people in the lurch. Also, there are people that cannot make time for these tours because of scheduling or other commitments. Another element to consider is that we know there are Downtown Toronto people out there who appreciate a more “DIY” (do it yourself) flavour for things… so we have developed this booklet… This is a “DIY” ghost tour… self guided… from Union Station to Bloor Street…. -

The Queen's Rangers the Queen's Rangers
The Queen's Rangers The Queen's Rangers This pamphlet is issued in connection with the presentation of the colours of the Queen's Rangers to the Public Library of Toronto, by Mr. Frederick B. Robins of that city. PREFACE When the Queen's Rangers were disbanded at the close of the War of the American Revolution, the colours of the regiment, in accordance with the custom of that time, were deposited with the Colonel, John Graves Simcoe. When he retired to his estate at Wolford near Honiton in Devonshire, he hung the colours in the Great Hall and there they remained until a few months ago, when through the interest, liberality and public spirit of Mr. Frederick B. Robins of Toronto, their removal to Canada and to Toronto was made possible. This was the suitable place for the colours which Simcoe prized so highly. He was the first Governor of Upper Canada and we might call him the founder of Toronto. The Public Reference Library has a collection of prints and documents illustrating his life and his conduct of public affairs in Canada and so the colours have found a real home. That our people may know who the Queen's Rangers were and lest there be some who might confuse the Queen's Rangers of the Simcoe administration in Canada with the Queen's Rangers of the Revolution, or lest still further confusion might arise from the fact that there was a regiment of Queen's Rangers in the Rebellion of 1837, we are reprinting the address on the Queen's Rangers given at the meeting of the Ontario Historical Association at Kingston in June. -

Where Did Brock Fall?
Looking back... with Alun Hughes WHERE DID BROCK FALL? The question in the title refers to Major General cannons firing from opposite banks. One of the Sir Isaac Brocks death at the Battle of Queenston British cannons, an 18-pounder, was located at the Heights in 1812. At first sight there seems to be an redan battery part way up the Niagara Escarpment. obvious answer, for at the south or upper end of the With his troops pinned down near the river, the village of Queenston stands an obelisk bearing the American commander Lieutenant Colonel Solomon inscription, Near this spot Major General Sir Isaac Van Rensselaer directed a detachment headed by Brock fell on 13th October 1812 while advancing Captain John Wool to scale the steep gorge wall in to repel the invading enemy. order to attack the battery from above. Books in Review / Comptes Rendus
Books in Review / Comptes rendus Michel Brisebois and/et Frangois Melangon Chris Raible. Muddy York Mud: Scandal e) Scurrility in Upper Canada. Creemore, Ont.: C.uriosity House, 1992. xiv, 289, [I] pp.; $18.oo (paper). IsBN o-96964Is8-ox. The career of William Lyon Mackenzie has often occupied centre stage in the history of both early nineteenth-century Upper Canada and the town of York (later Toronto). While the rebellion of I837 figures largely in our histories of the period, some attention is paid to the destruction of Mackenzie's press in 1826 in the so-called Types Riot. Indeed, this episode was largely responsible for turning a failing provincial newspaper into a leading reformist publication. In this book writer and broadcaster, Chris Raible, re-examines the attack on Mackenzie's print shop from a new perspective. He shifts the focus away from William Lyon Mackenzie and on to the rioters and other participants in the affair of the types. When in early June 1826 some fifteen or so young men invaded Mackenzie's premises, forcibly removed his types and tossed them into Lake Ontario, they set in motion a very complex legal and historical drama. Moreover, their actions were the culmination of an earlier configuration of causes and forces, both political and personal, that brought these particular men to break the law in this way. Chris Raible tries to unravel the multi-dimensional Types Riot using a rather unique structure for his book. Each chapter explains the role of one individual rioter, or one of the victims of their actions, or the part played by a person important to but removed from the scene of the actual riot. -
