White Hall University of Wisconsin–Madison Madison, WI 53706 U.S.A. Prague, September 19, 2014 The 16th Congress of Logic, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science (CLMPS) Dear Professor Sober, On behalf of the Czech National Committee for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and in collaboration with the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague, we would like to express our profound interest in hosting the 16th Congress of Logic, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science (CLMPS) in August 2019 here in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. As you probably know, many members of our National Committee for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science are professionally linked to the Institute of Philosophy, which is a part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the largest research organization in the Czech Republic. The Institute of Philosophy is a leading non-university research institution in the field of philosophy and the humanities in the Czech Republic with nearly two hundred researchers. The Institute participates in a wide range of international research projects, it regularly hosts prestigious international conferences and meetings, and furthermore features a visiting scholar program which has allowed us to welcome many prominent philosophers in recent years (e.g., prof. John Searle in 2013 and prof. Noam Chomsky in 2014). Moreover, the Institute’s research structure, with about 15 research units, contains no less than three departments that focus particularly on logic, methodology and philosophy of science: the Department of Logic (represented by researchers such as Pavel Materna, Jaroslav Peregrin), the Department of Analytic Philosophy (represented, e.g., by Petr Koťátko, Ladislav Kvasz), and the Centre for Science, Technology, and Society Studies (represented, e.g., by Ladislav Tondl). 16th International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, Prague 2019 5 Prague, an architectural jewel of Europe, makes for an exceptionally attractive congress destination offering both historical and modern conference venues, hotels, restaurants, infrastructure and places of interest. Congress delegates coming to Prague are pleased to see the variety of suitable conference venues that provide the highest standard of hospitality, with overall costs being competitive when compared with other European cities. Prague, in addition, is located in the very heart of Europe, so that it can be reached from all over the world very easily. Professor Sober, we strongly believe that the 16th Congress of Logic, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science in Prague in 2019, organized jointly by the Czech National Committee for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, would be a great and successful event. Our capital is a charming place providing all the necessary requirements for the Event, and our team is prepared to make all necessary efforts in its organization. Should you be interested in our invitation, we would gladly receive any information on the guidelines and rules for the candidacy. With our very best regards, Prof. Dr. Pavel Materna President of the Czech National Committee for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science Dr. Ondřej Ševeček Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic 16th International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, Prague 2019 6 1. • A Methodological Turn in Political Philosophy: Making Political Philosophy More Scientific?1 Tereza Křepelová Masaryk University, Brno
Public Reason 10 (2) - Public Reason 11 (1): 77-92 © 2019 by Public Reason A Methodological Turn in Political Philosophy: Making Political Philosophy More Scientific?1 Tereza Křepelová Masaryk University, Brno Abstract: The emergence of the first literature concerning the methodology of political philosophy, which we have witnessed over the last decade, indicates a general methodological shift within the discipline. This shift can be interpreted as a sign of the ongoing adjustment of political philosophy to the domain of science that had already begun when analytical political philosophy incorporated from logical positivism the premise of the unity of method of science and philosophy. The urge to have an epistemic source of justification for normative political theories lead analytical political philosophy to the development of various methodological frameworks from among which reflective equilibrium became the most influential one and nowadays it is being considered as the most widely used method in the contemporary political philosophy overall. Reflective equilibrium aims to provide knowledge that falls into the same category as scientific knowledge; however, it can also lead to various normative distortions resulting in the elimination of metaphysics, meta-ethics and religious claims from the normative part of political philosophical theorising. These normative distortions not only can result in epistemically wrong conclusions; above all, they implicitly affirm the normative propositions of political conceptions of liberalism. Hence, the prevalence and uncritical use of reflective equilibrium might narrow the topical scope and undermine the reflective and critical role of the discipline of political philosophy itself. Key words: political science, political philosophy, methodology, analytical political philosophy, logical positivism, political liberalism, epistemic value, epistemic justification, reflective equilibrium, philosophy of science.

Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Filozofick´afakulta Katedra logiky Pavel Arazim Logick´ypluralismus v historick´eperspektivˇe Logical Pluralism from Historical Perspective Teze dizertaˇcn´ıpr´ace Vedouc´ıpr´ace:Prof. RNDr. Jaroslav Peregrin, CSc. 2018 1 Logical pluralism and logical monism The general topic is to some degree vague, which means that also any theses or arguments I propose are partially threatened with a considerable degree of vagueness. The thesis revolves around multiple related and not clearly distinguished issues. One of the formulations could run I s logical pluralism true? Yet immediately one has to ask what could logical pluralism mean. Naively put, it is the thesis that more than one logic is correct. But again, in what sense correct? Given these problems with the very formulation of the issue, it is no surprise that logical pluralism was maintained by diverse authors in many different and probably mutually iconmpatible forms. One might be tempted to regard logical pluralism as a flawed thesis or doctrine, yet if it is unclear what sense can be made of logical pluralism, then it must be equally problematic to make sense of the opposite thesis, namely logical monism, which, at least in the most immediate and naive form, asserts that only one logic is correct, be it classical propositional logic, intuitioinistic propositional logic or other logic yet. Matti Eklund, who tried to find some order in the forms of logical pluralism calls his article Making sense of logical pluralism (Eklund (fothcoming)). He also admits that if there is a problem with making sense of logical pluralism, then there has to be an analogous problem with making sense of logica monism.
