Studies Centers and Chairs

A Tentative Listing

The following list represents a preliminary effort by an Association for Israel Studies (AIS) Task Force to identify centers, institutes, study programs, and chairs that focus on the academic study of modern Israel. It includes only institutions whose primary focus is on modern Israel, rather than on Jewish or Middle Eastern studies more broadly. It also excludes institutions or organizations that focus primarily on policy advocacy or public outreach rather than scholarly research and instruction. Because of definitional issues, it does not at this stage include endowed chairs within Israel. The task force wel- comes corrections or additions to the list. Please send them to [email protected].

Beginning in Fall 2005, the University of Calgary is launching an interdisciplin- ary graduate program in Israel Studies. The program will be offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities. The program, leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Israel Studies, is intended to enhance knowledge and research in the area of modern Israel and its region through inter- disciplinary teaching and research collaboration. Israel has been the bedrock of major world religions and civilizations; social, political, and commercial structures; and strategic and international relations. It has witnessed major processes of state building in the modern era. Israel’s experi- ence in combining old traditions and new practices in urbanization, industrializa- tion, social integration, institution building, and military defense bears important lessons that exceed the boundaries of that region and whose understanding is an important dimension in the study of today’s global world. The program’s core courses focus on the philosophical and historical forces underlying the establishment of modern Israel and its contemporary develop- ments. It is expected that its interdisciplinary nature will provide for coherence in understanding modern Israel, as students will have an opportunity to integrate relevant knowledge from a number of academic disciplines. Furthermore, it is expected that a scholarly and academic approach to the program, refraining from political biases haunting the field of Middle Eastern studies, will generate new insights on the region and provide the highest level of training for future gen- erations. Focusing on Israel, the program will naturally be related to the study of Jewish religion and heritage, with an emphasis on the important events in modern Jewish history.

Students accepted to the program will complete three full-course equivalents and a thesis. The program includes the following: 1. An interdisciplinary foundation course, introducing students to major themes in the origin and establishment of modern Israel 2. One full-course equivalent at the graduate level in a disciplinary focus, such as history or political science, providing important background for the thesis and positioning graduates of this program for doctoral studies in a traditional discipline 3. An appropriate methods course in the focus discipline
