This research aimed at analyzing the nesting behavior of Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) in Nyaru Menteng Arboretum, Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The objects of observation were the immature orangutan nest, and the type of nest tree. The purposive sampling technique was used because not all immature Orangutan could make a nest. The Focal animal sampling method was used to determine the daily behavior and nets building activity. It involved observing and recording the behavior of five young Orangutans over a certain period of time and analyzing the nest made. The results of the study established that the daily activity of immature Orangutan on an average sequentially ranges from feeding 17.18%, moving 23.92%, resting 26.34%, and social behavior 32.57%. -

Maintenance and conservation of Dipterocarp diversity in tropical forests _______________________________________________ Mohammad Nazrin B Abdul Malik A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Science Department of Animal and Plant Sciences November 2019 1 i Thesis abstract Many theories and hypotheses have been developed to explain the maintenance of diversity in plant communities, particularly in hyperdiverse tropical forests. Maintenance of the composition and diversity of tropical forests is vital, especially species of high commercial value. I focus on the high value dipterocarp timber species of Malaysia and Borneo as these have been extensive logged owing to increased demands from global timber trade. In this thesis, I explore the drivers of diversity of this group, as well as the determinants of global abundance, conservation and timber value. The most widely supported hypothesis for explaining tropical diversity is the Janzen Connell hypothesis. I experimentally tested the key elements of this, namely density and distance dependence, in two dipterocarp species. The results showed that different species exhibited different density and distance dependence effects. To further test the strength of this hypothesis, I conducted a meta-analysis combining multiple studies across tropical and temperate study sites, and with many species tested. It revealed significant support for the Janzen- Connell predictions in terms of distance and density dependence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, I highlight how environmental adaptation affects dipterocarp distribution, and the relationships of plant traits with ecological factors and conservation status. This analysis showed that environmental and ecological factors are related to plant traits and highlights the need for dipterocarp conservation priorities. -

BOER graduated in 1985 as a tropical forester from Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands. From 1986-1989 he worked in Burkina Faso in the 'Village Forestry Project' focusing on small-scale plantation establishment and nursery planning and management. In this work, training the foresters of the Forest Service was a major component, as was the planning, monitoring and evaluation of all project activities at provincial level. From 1990-1992 he worked as an agroforestry expert in a forestry research project in East Kaliman tan, Indonesia, where the land use practices of forest settlers and their adoption of agroforestry techniques were studied. The training ofloca l foresters and agro- foresters was again an important issue. Since 1993 Boer has been involved in the Prosea Programme as a staff member of the Publication Office. He was asso ciate editor for PROSEA 5(2): Timber trees: Minor commercial timbers (1995), Prosea 5(3): Timber trees: Lesser-known timbers (1998), focusing on silvicul ture, wood anatomy and wood properties, and for Prosea 12(1): Medicinal and poisonous plants 1. Tree Diversity in the Rain Forests of Kalimantan
The Balance between Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use of Tropical Rain Forests TREE DIVERSITY IN THE RAIN FORESTS OF KALIMANTAN Kade Sidiyasa ABSTRACT Kalimantan, which has large areas of forest, encompasses a variety of forest types comprising mangrove forest, coastal forest, swamp forest, evergreen tropical rainforest, forest over limestone and heath forest, and stretching from sea level up to 2556 m altitude. The mixed dipterocarp forests are situated mostly in lowland areas, below 600 m altitude. Very few Dipterocarp species occur at high altitudes, i.e., Hopea mengerawan, Shorea curtisii ssp. curtisii, Shorea sp. and Vatica oblongifolia. The high quality timber species Agathis endertii is found only at an altitude of 1450-1600 m, where it mainly grows together with some species of Lithocarpus, Nageia wallichiana and Podocarpus neriifolius. Eugenia spp., Adinandra and Lithocarpus dominate vegetations on the mountain peaks of Mt. Lunjut and Mt. Mencah (Kayan Mentarang National Park). A typical highland species, Weinmannia borneesis is also found here. Tristaniopsis sp. can be dominant on very steep and rocky slopes. Shorea balangeran and Cratoxylum glaucum usually grow on peat or kerangas forests, whereas Gonystylus bancanus, Alstonia pneumatophora, Alstonia spatulata, Combretocarpus rotundatus, Dactylocladus and Lophopetalum javanicum are adapted to the swampy areas. Detailed information on the vegetation (trees) of Sungai Wain Protected Forest in East Kalimantan is presented. In a plot area of 3.6 ha, divided into 9 subplots, 385 tree species with the dbh of 10 cm or more were recorded. These species belong all to 143 genera and 49 families. The species composition in the different subplots sometimes varies greatly. -
