Quantitative distribution of Raru (Cotylelobium melanoxylon) in Nature Forest Bonalumban, Sub-district Tukka, District Central Tapanuli, North Sumatera. Supervised by Mrs. ARIDA SUSILOWATI and Mrs. CUT RIZLANI KHOLIBRINA. Raru is one of multifunctions trees as wood producer and non wood, an ingredient for traditional bataknese drink (tuak) and as a traditional medicine. The multipurpose utilization of raru causing high exploitation of this species and listed Raru into endangered species according to IUCN 1998. We conducted study to determine the vegetation structure of the species at seedling to tree stage at Bona Lumban Forest - Central Tapanuli. We use purposive sampling technique by making line transect to those of forest area determined by local people as having naturally growing C. melanoxylon. Puposive sampling method was used in this research to get information on important value index (IVI). While plants that asociation was conducted by measurement and observation in field and followed by Ochiai Index, Dice Index and Jackard Index analysis. The result showed that there are two species of Raru in Bonalumban forest, those were raru dahanon (Cotylelobium melanoxylon) and raru songal (Cotylelobium lanceolatum). The highest IVI of raru on seedling, sapling, pole and tree stage were 26,27, 22,92,43,47, 42,42 respectively. The association analysis showed that raru have strong association with rengas and red meranti. Maintenance and conservation of Dipterocarp diversity in tropical forests _______________________________________________ Mohammad Nazrin B Abdul Malik A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Science Department of Animal and Plant Sciences November 2019 1 i Thesis abstract Many theories and hypotheses have been developed to explain the maintenance of diversity in plant communities, particularly in hyperdiverse tropical forests. Maintenance of the composition and diversity of tropical forests is vital, especially species of high commercial value. I focus on the high value dipterocarp timber species of Malaysia and Borneo as these have been extensive logged owing to increased demands from global timber trade. In this thesis, I explore the drivers of diversity of this group, as well as the determinants of global abundance, conservation and timber value. The most widely supported hypothesis for explaining tropical diversity is the Janzen Connell hypothesis. I experimentally tested the key elements of this, namely density and distance dependence, in two dipterocarp species. The results showed that different species exhibited different density and distance dependence effects. To further test the strength of this hypothesis, I conducted a meta-analysis combining multiple studies across tropical and temperate study sites, and with many species tested. It revealed significant support for the Janzen- Connell predictions in terms of distance and density dependence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, I highlight how environmental adaptation affects dipterocarp distribution, and the relationships of plant traits with ecological factors and conservation status. This analysis showed that environmental and ecological factors are related to plant traits and highlights the need for dipterocarp conservation priorities.

All vascular plants were enumerated and identified. Importance value index (IVI) was computed to characterize the floristic composition. To capture different aspects of species diversity, we considered five different indices. The mean stem density was 7585 stems per ha. In total 36797 vascular plants representing 348 species belong to 227 genera in 89 families were identified within 5-ha of a coastal hill forest that is comprises 4.2% species, 10.7% genera and 34.7% families of the total taxa found in Peninsular Malaysia. Based on IVI, Agrostistachys longifolia (IVI 1245), Eugeissona tristis (IVI 890), Calophyllum wallichianum (IVI 807), followed by Taenitis blechnoides (IVI 784) were the most dominant species. The most speciose rich families were Rubiaceae having 27 species, followed by Dipterocarpaceae (21 species), Euphorbiaceae (20 species) and Palmae (14 species). According to growth forms, 57% of all species were trees, 13% shrubs, 10% herbs, 9% lianas, 4% palms, 3.5% climbers and 3% ferns.

  • Tree Diversity in the Rain Forests of Kalimantan
The Balance between Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use of Tropical Rain Forests TREE DIVERSITY IN THE RAIN FORESTS OF KALIMANTAN Kade Sidiyasa ABSTRACT Kalimantan, which has large areas of forest, encompasses a variety of forest types comprising mangrove forest, coastal forest, swamp forest, evergreen tropical rainforest, forest over limestone and heath forest, and stretching from sea level up to 2556 m altitude. The mixed dipterocarp forests are situated mostly in lowland areas, below 600 m altitude. Very few Dipterocarp species occur at high altitudes, i.e., Hopea mengerawan, Shorea curtisii ssp. curtisii, Shorea sp. and Vatica oblongifolia. The high quality timber species Agathis endertii is found only at an altitude of 1450-1600 m, where it mainly grows together with some species of Lithocarpus, Nageia wallichiana and Podocarpus neriifolius. Eugenia spp., Adinandra and Lithocarpus dominate vegetations on the mountain peaks of Mt. Lunjut and Mt. Mencah (Kayan Mentarang National Park). A typical highland species, Weinmannia borneesis is also found here. Tristaniopsis sp. can be dominant on very steep and rocky slopes. Shorea balangeran and Cratoxylum glaucum usually grow on peat or kerangas forests, whereas Gonystylus bancanus, Alstonia pneumatophora, Alstonia spatulata, Combretocarpus rotundatus, Dactylocladus and Lophopetalum javanicum are adapted to the swampy areas. Detailed information on the vegetation (trees) of Sungai Wain Protected Forest in East Kalimantan is presented. In a plot area of 3.6 ha, divided into 9 subplots, 385 tree species with the dbh of 10 cm or more were recorded. These species belong all to 143 genera and 49 families. The species composition in the different subplots sometimes varies greatly.
