Weevils are a diverse group of plant-feeding beetles and occur in most terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. This chapter documents the diversity and distribution of 295 weevil species found in the Canadian Prairies Ecozone belonging to the families Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.), and Curculionidae (273 spp.). Weevils in the Prairies Ecozone represent approximately 34% of the total number of weevil species found in Canada. Notable species with distributions restricted to the Prairies Ecozone, usually occurring in one or two provinces, are candidates for potentially rare or endangered status. Résumé. Les charançons forment un groupe diversifié de coléoptères phytophages et sont présents dans la plupart des écosystèmes terrestres et dulcicoles. Le présent chapitre décrit la diversité et la répartition de 295 espèces de charançons vivant dans l’écozone des prairies qui appartiennent aux familles suivantes : Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.) et Curculionidae (273 spp.). Les charançons de cette écozone représentent environ 34 % du total des espèces de ce groupe présentes au Canada. Certaines espèces notables, qui ne se trouvent que dans cette écozone — habituellement dans une ou deux provinces — mériteraient d’être désignées rares ou en danger de disparition. -

Entomol. 33(1): 21Ð27 (2004) Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/ee/article/33/1/21/477876 by guest on 25 September 2021 ABSTRACT The biology of the willow bark beetle, Trypophloeus striatulus (Mannerheim) was studied in its primary host, Salix alaxensis (Andersson) Coville, at 28 locations in Alaska, and in the laboratory. Most broods transformed to adults before fall, emerged, and excavated solitary chambers in the bark, where they passed over-winter before becoming sexually mature in spring. Emerged adults walked on the bark for protracted periods, lacking any disposition to ßy. This behavior contributes to reinfesting the stem, downward for several generations, thereby conserving a susceptible host (limited resource). A fungus, Cytospora sp., most likely chrysosperma (Person) Fries, was present in stems infested by the beetles. Adults usually chose a lenticel as a site for excavating a chamber, tapping the surface with their antennae, and were possibly attracted there by odor emitted by fungus-infected, underlying tissue. Egg galleries are cavelike. Eggs are exceptionally large relative to the adult, and are laid in a cluster averaging Ϸ20 per female. Larvae pass through three instars, feeding en masse in the Þrst instar, then becoming solitary. Their mines contain almost entirely excrement, lacking fragments of phloem common in galleries of most bark beetles. Pupation occurs in a cell, excavated by the larva, which usually etches the xylem. A bird preys on over-wintering larvae; otherwise the beetle has few natural enemies. -

Abstract: Measurements of cores or disc samples representing slightly more than 76,000 annual rings from 336 western white pine tree were compiled to obtain a set of deviations from normal growth of healthy trees that would express the response of these trees to variation in the environment during the last 280 years. Their growth was demonstrated to be a function of temperature and available moisture for the period of climatic record from 1912 to 1958. Extrapolating the relation of growth to weather to the long tree ring record of western white pine, we find that the period 1916—40 represents the most adverse growth conditions with regard to intensity and duration in the last 280 years. This drought, superimposed on sites having severe moisture—stress characteristics, triggered the chain of events which ultimately resulted in pole blight. If the unfavorable conditions for growth during 1916—40 do not represent a shift to a new climatic mean and if western white pine is regenerated only on sites with low moisture—stress characteristics, the probability is high that pole blight will not reoccur for many centuries in stands regenerated from this date on. -

("Eastern Forest Insects," by Whiteford L. Baker (1972) covers the area east of the 100th Meridian.) The intended primary users are practicing foresters and others responsible for preventing or minimizing insect-caused damage to forests and wood products. Thus, major purposes of the manual are to facilitate recognition of insects and their damage and to provide needed information for determining a course of action. The manual should also be useful to students of forestry and entomology, professional entomologists, extension specialists, forestry technicians, forest owners, forest recreationists, teachers, and others. This manual supersedes "Insect Enemies of Western Forests," (Misc. Pub. No. 273), by F. Paul Keen, issued in 1938 and last revised in 1952. In this manual the discussion of insects is arranged in taxonomic order rather than by part of the tree affected.
