Volume 22, No.4 October, November, December 2008 Brian Eichenberger "AND SO IT'S OVER" Lead Voice Borrowing on that great closer of the Freshmen, the curtain came down on the 60th anni- versary celebration in Indianapolis on August 23rd. Closing on the 21st edition of the Four Freshmen Society's annual get-together was indeed a bittersweet moment for the conven- tion planning committee which had worked for the past two and a half years to organize the event, attended by nearly 600 "guests" from 36 states and nine countries. On behalf of the planning committee, we hope everyone in attendance had a great experi- ence, and we're sorry for those of you who couldn't be here. From all reports, the hotel accomodations, the food, the 113 Club (music mart, silent auction, FF gallery, etc), the tour, the overflow Wannabee sessions, Fresh Talk, and especially the music did not disappoint. For all of that and the new and renewed friendships of the legions of Freshmen fans, we are most thankful. Curtis Calderon And, of course who will ever forget the presence and performances of Freshmen Bob Flani- 2nd Voice gan, Ross Barbour, Bob Ferreira, Brian Eichenberger, Vince Johnson, Curtis Calderon, Ray Brown, Rod Henley, Kirk Marcy, and Greg Stegeman. Mrs. Don Barbour also joined in the anniversary festivities. The Four Freshmen Group Bios
The Four Freshmen group bios BOB FERREIRA auditioned for The Four Freshmen in 1992 for bass voice and percussion,while a music student at Central Washington University. The group asked Ferreira to join, presenting him with a difficult decision of whether or not to leave his academics behind in lieu of a career in entertainment. Bob is still pleased with his decision and has not looked back since. H enjoys being part of such an iconic musical legacy having performed in fifty states, ten countries, and on nine Freshmen recordings. When not on the road with The Four Freshmen, Ferreira occasionally freelances as a drummer in Las Vegas. TOMMY BOYNTON is the newest member of The Four Freshmen, singing 1st tenor and playing bass. Growing up in Aurora, Co., his musical journey began in the 3rd grade, singing in a children’s chorus, and studying piano and drums. Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, Beach Boys [Music Playing on Piano] [Brian Ward]: So we have this group from America that comes out of surf rock and they also borrow from some jazz vocal traditions and they really are America’s answer to The Beatles. Because they came around at the same time The Beatles hit the market. Both of these groups are symbiotic. They have this sympathetic relationship. They feed off of each other and they compete with each other, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The result of that is all this great music. Let’s talk about The Beach Boys for a minute. It’s really a family affair. We have these brothers: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. They have their cousin, Mike Love and their neighbor Alan Jardine who plays drums. Their songs are about the beach, paradise, cars, hot rods, California girls. So there’s this theme of California in all of their music and this lifestyle and that’s where they’re from. Their music is a combination of this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. It was a jazz vocal group that sang in really close four part harmony. Brian Wilson just loved this group and he pattern The Beach Boys’ vocal harmonies after this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. Another big part of their music is this surf style that was around them as they were developing as a band. So they adopted this surf style of rock n’ roll, of guitar driven instrumental rock. So you combine these two things, these beautiful four part harmonies with the surf rock and you get The Beach Boys.

The Four Freshmen group bios BRIAN EICHENBERGER sings the melody (top part), plays bass, and is the chief vocal arranger and musical director for the Four Freshmen. He joined the group in 1996 at the age of 19 as a bass player / second part singer, later switching to the top part and playing some guitar along the way. Off the road, Brian works as a songwriter and producer in his home studio. He enjoys jogging, ping pong, juggling and general computer-audio nerdery. He lives in Las Vegas with his wife, daughter and four neurotic cats. STEIN MALVEY began his musical journey at age four, studying piano at St. Olaf College in his hometown of Northﬁeld, MN. Growing restless with classical repertoire, he discovered guitar at age 12, and fell in love. Just two years later he was playing guitar professionally. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Stein spent years in both the New York and Minneapolis music scenes, recording and touring with groups in many genres: rock, pop, r&b, soul, funk, jazz, country, classical and avant garde.
