ACQUIRING FAITH A Siberian Childhood by Nina Kartasheva The compelling story of a Soviet childhood through the eyes of a woman born to Orthodox exiles in the Ural town of Verkhoturye. Nina Kartasheva’s childhood recollections are offset by her account of a later critical illness and the miraculous intervention of the last Russian Royal Family. “The rule of faith and the model of meekness...” I’m reading, as I often do, the troparion to St. Nicholas and remembering the days of my childhood in the far-away Northern Urals, in Verkhoturye, where both my grandmoth- ers were exiled in the 30’s with their children, who afterwards became my parents. I appeared at a later, calmer time when there were no repressions and no one considered my grandmothers to be exiles. Under Krushchev, however, the attitude towards the faith again became blasphemous, to put it mildly, and intolerant if we choose to use harder and more truthful words. Despite everything, traditions were kept up in the old Russian families, along with religious practices and the faith itself. -

Borisova Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences, Staromonetny per., Moscow 119017, Russia ABSTRACT Hydromorphological and hydroclimatic methods were used to reconstruct the former surface runoff from the East European part of the Black Sea drainage basin. Data on the shape and dynamics of the last Fennoscandian ice sheet were used to cal- culate meltwater supply to the headwaters of the Dnieper River. The channel width and meander wavelength of well-preserved fragments of large paleochannels were measured at 51 locations in the Dnieper and Don River basins (East European Plain), which allowed reconstruction of the former surface runoff of the ancient rivers, as well as the total volume of fl ow into the Black Sea, using transform functions. Studies of the composition of fossil fl oras derived from radiocarbon-dated sediments of vari- ous origins and ages make it possible to locate their modern region analogues. These analogues provide climatic and hydrological indexes for the Late Pleniglacial and Late Glacial landscapes. In the research the prediction of occurrence of ice jam based on the K Nearest Neighbor method was considered by example of the city of Velikiy Ustyug, located at the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug Rivers. A forecast accuracy of 82% was achieved based on selected most significant hydrological and meteorological features. 1 Introduction Floods gain a lead among natural disasters both in terms of area of distribution and damage caused for Russia. Flooding can be caused by snow cover melting, a large amount of precipitation, the effects of surges, a breakthrough of a dam, etc. For northern rivers, including rivers of the European part of Russia, ice jams often cause floods. The goal of this research is developing a methodology for predicting the occurrence of ice jam based on the machine learning method. The place of confluence of the Sukhona and Yug Rivers, where the city of Velikiy Ustyug is located, was chosen as the object of study. The probability of the ice jams formation in this area is 43.5% according to statistics. Their occurrence leads to an increase of water level and flooding of residential and utility buildings. 2 Data and methods Over the past two decades, there has been a huge leap in the development of computer technology and machine learning, which has allowed the application of various machine learning algorithms to a large number of applied problems, including the prediction of flood characteristics. -

BUROVA – Moscow1 ABSTRACT. Destructive processes on seas and water reservoirs of Russia lead to significant losses of valuable coastal territories and damage to numerous economic objects located there. The article discusses the spatial and temporal patterns of the development of certain types of coasts and water bodies as a whole. An algorithm (methodology) for the quantitative assessment of abrasion risk is proposed, which is the main tool for determining the need for and priority of preventive measures. The general mathematical models for abrasion risk calculation are substantiated. The possibilities of assessing the abrasion risk with a minimum amount of data for choos- ing the optimal location of new reservoirs are considered. Specific examples of abra- sion risk assessment are given for seas and large water reservoirs in Russia, with priority investments from the federal budget being indicated. Timely implementation of measures aimed at reducing losses from coast destruction will benefit for the ra- tional and safe use of coastal areas.
