The year was 1980, and Detroit was getting ready to play host to thousands of Re- publican conventioneers who were holding their quadrennial shindig in the Motor City. In a breathtaking moment of silliness, someone decided to install brand-new awnings CAN WE WHO on the windows of the recently abandoned Statler Hotel, so as not to offend any of the visiting GOP functionaries with the depressing urban financial realities of the day. Meanwhile, the members of Detroit band Was (Not Was) were engaging in a bold mu- sical experiment, splicing the genes of jazz, rock, R&B, and funk. With their futuristic grooves and intelligent (if twisted) lyrics, Was (Not Was) didn’t hide the local decay MAN TH E SHIP behind fake awnings. It gathered its ethnically diverse ranks, dressed the decay up in some fine threads and took it out dancing. The band’s ringleaders were Don Was (Donald Fagenson) and David Was (David Weiss). These brothers (of the soul variety) were in a good position to point out the absurdities of American life in the early ‘80s. Hailing from the scrubbed inner-ring De- OF STATE DENY troit suburb of Oak Park, the pair met in eighth grade, appropriately enough when they were both waiting in the principal’s office for discipline. The young friends cut their teeth listening to the homegrown sounds of Motown singles and the MC5. Add plenty of LSD and a healthy dose of the Firesign Theater to their natural mischievousness, mix well, and you’ve got a good idea of the part of the woodwork these freaks creaked IT IS SOME WHAT out of.

Don Was: “As adolescents, David and I would drive aimlessly around Detroit trying to pick-up girls but to be honest, we rarely scored and would vent our frustration by going back to David's basement, smoking a lot of pot, grabbing some instruments and turning the tape recorder on. Short of getting laid - which seemed out of the question at that point - writing and recording music was the coolest thing we could think of to do. Jump ahead fifteen years, we were both married with kids and living a couple thousand miles apart but would still get together to record. During one session in 1980, we stumbled on ‘Wheel Me Out’ and knew instantly that we’d landed on something radical, it was a clean amalgamation of our Detroit musical roots: jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer wailing over a deep R&B dance groove and some beat poetry, there was nothing like it at the time. I'd been listening to a lot of stuff coming out on the ZE Records label - James White & The Blacks, material, Kid Creole – and it seemed like a good home for us. David was working as a jazz critic for the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner so we hatched a devious plan whereby he would call up Michael Zilkha (head of ZE) under the pretence of interviewing him for the paper.

It was by the Disco Dub Band; on the Movers label; an extreme reworking of the O’Jays’ For The Love of Money. Ar- ranged and produced by journalist Davitt Sigerson, it featured steals of James Brown gui- tar motifs, free jazz traces, and stripped down, dubbed out disco. Its reverberations would be felt for many years. Five years on, consciously or not, it could certainly be felt haunting the dancehall that was home to ZE’s Mutant Disco revolution. ZE by that time was ready to burst overground in a riot of colour. A perverse over-the-top Hollywood musical spectacular to complement the grainier, underground pop that could equate to the black and white French new wave films of tortured New York noir novels.

Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.

"Danger: Depressing": John Cale's Music for a New Society Domino Records liner notes, 2016 JOHN CALE'S Music for a New Society startled in 1982 and it startles in 2014. It was markedly at odds not only with the synthetic and formulaic pop-rock of its time but with the maverick exuberance of most of the other music on Michael Zilkha's ZE label. Kid Creole and 'Out Come The Freaks' this was not. Music for a New Society falls into a category of Harrowing Interior Journey that includes Big Star's Third, Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Scott Walker's Tilt, along with albums by fellow former members of the illustrious Velvet Underground: Nico's Desertshore, Lou Reed's Berlin. Even within Cale's oeuvre of that period it sticks out like a smashed thumb, separating as it does the dark paranoia of Honi Soit (1981) from the marginally friendlier settings of Caribbean Sunset (1984). It is John Cale at his most uncomfortably unhappy, close to chemical rock-bottom and attempting to articulate his torment in real time in a New York studio. By turns hummable and unbearable, it is a long-night-of- the-soul experiment in art-rock that's never less than captivating. "It was intended to be a proper solo album, which was something I'd never done," Cale told me when we discussed the record in early 1983. "Initially the idea was to stick me in the studio with a piano and have me just play the songs like that. There was a purist notion of what it was supposed to be, but it flowered into something entirely different, with a lot of overdubbings.
