Internet discussion boards have become an important venue for women to participate in ongoing discussions about the role of mothering in contemporary society and serve as a means by which they are actively shaping society’s understanding of the role of mothers. A textual analysis of a popular mothering discussion board yielded two dominate mothering identities, tensions that exist for each mothering type and how mothers resolve those tensions through the mothering discourse. The study ultimately revealed the ways in which the mothering discourse serves as an important part of the identity construction process and is used as a means of negotiating, managing and ultimately reinforcing a mother’s own identity. i TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I. COBISS.SR-ID 223348492 Julijana Zhabeva Papazova* Independent researcher, Skopje WOMEN’S VOICES IN ALTERNATIVE MUSIC - LISA GERRARD AND ELIZABETH FRASER Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of Lisa Gerrard’s and Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal styles that promoted a new way of singing on the alternative music scene. Instead of the traditional usage of lyrics in the English language as their mother tongue, they use so called ‘glossolalia’, meaning wordless, or substituting language with a melodic, ex ploratory rapture by their vocal range alone in a couple of octaves. The main points of analysis are the relationships between the vocal interpretation and instruments, music form, main melodic themes, rhythm, accomplished with iconography in the relationship between vocal interpretations and stage performances. Key words: alternative music, Lisa Gerrard, Elizabeth Fraser, vocal analysis, glossolalia Introduction The period of the 1980s brought more diverse and at the same time powerful and expressive female vocals with a wide vocal range as band or solo singers in the area of pop, rock and alternative music such as: Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard, Eliza beth Fraser, Siouxsie, Tracy Chapman, Enya and Sinead O’Connor. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the vocal interpretation of two singers, members of two important bands as marked in published music encyclopedias and monographs in the domain of alternative or indie music: Lisa Gerrard as the vocalist of Dead Can Dance and Elizabeth Fraser as the vocalist of Cocteau Twins.

  • The Music Column That Wouldn't Die: New Album Reviews
The Music Column That Wouldn’t Die: New Album Reviews. I told myself I was over this, that I had retired from the world of music reviews. I had moved onto bigger and better things (mostly staring at the wall and wondering why nobody calls me anymore). Yet here I am, a mere few months after burning my bridges, giving up on new music and making a world of enemies, back in the game. Did I miss the constant abuse, the being paid in soiled pennies and the lack of recognition which writing this unremembered column entailed? Funnily enough, I did! It was listening to the post punk genius of the new Dry Cleaning record that did it. I thought to myself ‘someone has to take it upon themselves to tell the world just how good this album is’. After a moment of quiet reflection where I drank a glass of lukewarm Ribena to calm the nerves, I decided that that person may as well be me. By JOHN BITTLES So, here we are. Bittles’ Magazine, like some particularly bothersome zombie with a bad haircut and worse breath, has been reborn. And what a re-introduction we have! In this month’s reviews there is the art heavy punk funk strut of Squid, the melancholy dream pop of White Flowers, Thomas Fehlmann’s rich ambiance, the return of living legends The Coral, the skewed pop of Dntel, and Dry Cleaning of course. So, tell all your friends, phone the tabloids, and let us begin… New Long Leg by Dry Cleaning.

www.zerecords.com CAN YOU IMAGINE ALL THAT MILK? The year was 1980, and Detroit was getting ready to play host to thousands of Re- publican conventioneers who were holding their quadrennial shindig in the Motor City. In a breathtaking moment of silliness, someone decided to install brand-new awnings CAN WE WHO on the windows of the recently abandoned Statler Hotel, so as not to offend any of the visiting GOP functionaries with the depressing urban financial realities of the day. Meanwhile, the members of Detroit band Was (Not Was) were engaging in a bold mu- sical experiment, splicing the genes of jazz, rock, R&B, and funk. With their futuristic grooves and intelligent (if twisted) lyrics, Was (Not Was) didn’t hide the local decay MAN TH E SHIP behind fake awnings. It gathered its ethnically diverse ranks, dressed the decay up in some fine threads and took it out dancing. The band’s ringleaders were Don Was (Donald Fagenson) and David Was (David Weiss). These brothers (of the soul variety) were in a good position to point out the absurdities of American life in the early ‘80s. Hailing from the scrubbed inner-ring De- OF STATE DENY troit suburb of Oak Park, the pair met in eighth grade, appropriately enough when they were both waiting in the principal’s office for discipline. The young friends cut their teeth listening to the homegrown sounds of Motown singles and the MC5. Add plenty of LSD and a healthy dose of the Firesign Theater to their natural mischievousness, mix well, and you’ve got a good idea of the part of the woodwork these freaks creaked IT IS SOME WHAT out of.

Our first paper in this series compared prophecy in the stars to Sacred History in the time of Christ & Apostles on a year by year basis (See Star Knowledge – Sacred History). Please read this paper first. This paper compares prophecy in the stars to Secular History for the past two thousand years. We will break down the past two thousand years into 50 year segments or ‘eras’. Each era matches a star sign. Because each star sign matches a chapter in Genesis, each era also matches a chapter in Genesis. We are in the 41st era (2001 AD to 2050 AD) since the Star Wheel began to rotate in 1 AD. This era is the star sign CETUS which means “BEAST FROM THE SEA: SHAMAN” and corresponds to Gen. 41 where Joseph explained Pharaoh’s Dream. Pharaoh elevated Joseph, who was the prototype Shaman.1 BASICS OF STAR PROPHECY By careful investigation into star meanings we reached three basic conclusions: (1) The drama of eternal salvation is written in star signs on Sun’s path (Basic Paper); (2) All the constellations in the heavens speak a prophetic word (Expanded Paper); (3) Prophetic knowledge in star signs maps 1-to-1 to chapters in Genesis (Advanced Paper). ASTROLOGY IS FORBIDDEN Astrology is forbidden (Deut. 18). Our research is not astrology. Our pictures for star signs and our meanings for star signs are Christ centered and reflect a Biblical perspective.

© www.totalmusicmagazine.com www.totalmusicmagazine.com - making–playing-listening-loving www.totalmusicmagazine.com Interview with Don Was Total Music: Can you recall what prompted you and David to begin making music together, and how the original ZE Records deal came about? Don Was: “As adolescents, David and I would drive aimlessly around Detroit trying to pick-up girls but to be honest, we rarely scored and would vent our frustration by going back to David's basement, smoking a lot of pot, grabbing some instruments and turning the tape recorder on. Short of getting laid - which seemed out of the question at that point - writing and recording music was the coolest thing we could think of to do. Jump ahead fifteen years, we were both married with kids and living a couple thousand miles apart but would still get together to record. During one session in 1980, we stumbled on ‘Wheel Me Out’ and knew instantly that we’d landed on something radical, it was a clean amalgamation of our Detroit musical roots: jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer wailing over a deep R&B dance groove and some beat poetry, there was nothing like it at the time. I'd been listening to a lot of stuff coming out on the ZE Records label - James White & The Blacks, material, Kid Creole – and it seemed like a good home for us. David was working as a jazz critic for the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner so we hatched a devious plan whereby he would call up Michael Zilkha (head of ZE) under the pretence of interviewing him for the paper.
