Goyette, External Member, Sociology © Copyright 2014 by Byung Kwan Chae All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo- Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans’ expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans’ habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members’ positions. -

However, the literature on civil religion is divided between those who attribute it to bottom-up cultural spontaneity and those who see it as an ideological top-down construction. Moreover, there has been a relative lack of scholarly attention to Korean civil religion. This paper addresses both issues by arguing that a strong civil religion indeed exists in the country and that it has been an important part of the “nation-building” process since the founding of the Republic of Korea in 1948. The paper highlights how a succession of authoritarian regimes (1948–1987) successfully mobilized a strong civil religion for political purposes. The resulting civil religion targeted economic growth as the national goal to overcome all social ills, focused on the country’s ethnic and cultural homogeneity to boost national confidence and pride, exalted its traditional religions, especially Confucianism, as repositories of Korean traditional culture, and rendered sacred meanings to national symbols such as the flag and national anthem. Even after democratization, Korean civil religion remains largely ideological, as the Korean government is heavily involved in framing, planning, sponsoring, and promoting the country’s civil religion. -

Fusion Food Is a Popular Global Culinary Trend
Making Sense of Fusion Bibimbaps within Auckland Eateries Joanne-Yeeun Chun 2020 Faculty of Culture and Society A dissertation submitted to Auckland University of Technology in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Gastronomy Supervisor Dr. Lindsay Neill i Abstract Fusion food is a popular global culinary trend. Yet, it is an under-researched domain within the study of gastronomy. In everyday use, the term ‘fusion food’ generally refers to a combination or a fusion of different culinary cultures into one dish. However, there is a lack of academic exploration of how these combinations are realised practically. Consequently, this research aims to fill that knowledge gap by investigating the Korean dish, bibimbap, and its fusion derivatives within my local Auckland “culinascape” (Morris, 2010, p. 6). To achieve that research goal, this research is guided by qualitative description and thematic analysis in the interviews of four expert participants. These participants were four highly esteemed Korean migrant chefs from four different Korean fusion eateries in Auckland, who offered extensive knowledge and understanding of bibimbap and fusion bibimbap to this research. This research illuminates multiple layers of knowledge about fusion bibimbap. In revealing fusion bibimbap’s construction process, a broader appreciation for the socio-temporality and the cultural context of food is provided. Moreover, in building on the actant materiality of bibimbap, fusion bibimbap is positioned as a symbolic representation of a glocalised Korean identity within the Kiwi milieu. Most importantly, and building on Morris (2010), I suggest that the fusion bibimbap represents Korean migrant empowerment expressed within the Auckland “culinascape” (p. -
The Hangul Characters
The Korean language is classified as a member of the Ural-Altaic family (other members of this family include the Mongolian, Finnish, and Hungarian languages.) Until the early 1400s, most documents were written in classical Chinese characters (known in Korean as Hanja). As the idiographs are difficult to learn, only the educated people could read and write. King Sejong, the 4th ruler of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), set up a special committee of scholars in 1443 to create a new writing system specifically suited to the Korean language. The result was Hangul (meaning 'the one script'). It originally contained 28 symbols, although 4 have dropped out of use. The alphabet has 10 vowels and 14 consonants. The consonants represent the simplified outlines of the parts of the mouth and tongue used to pronounce them. The vowels are associated with elements of the philosophy of the Book of Changes. In 1994, Discovery magazine described Hangul as the most logical language writing system in the world. The simplicity of Hangul led Korea to become one of the most literate countries in the world. U.S. novelist Pearl Buck said that Hangul is the simplest writing system in the world and likenedKing Sejong to Leonardo da Vinci. Even though Hangul is a system of phonetic symbols, it is categorized as new level of feature system, the first and the only in the world. On Oct. 1, 1997, UNESCO designated Hunminjeongeum as world archive property. Koreans commemorate the creation of Hangul each year on October 9. This study classifies portrait halls as either official or informal, depending on their inclusion in or exclusion from the official state rites and goes on to discern the different features and functions of specific portrait halls through in-depth investigation of the ritual goods used therein and the interior settings and adornment of the halls. By distinguishing repositories, where portraits were not formally worshipped, from portrait halls, it also offers case studies of portraits in the repositories and illuminates their original function and distinctive character in form and style. -

FORWARD Since 1S53, when tension in Korea was reduced to the point where the status quo appeared to have been restored, world attention has been focused on other areus of Hsia. Many in the West had forgotten the potential threat to peace and order posed by North Korea until the January 1968 attempt at assassination of President Pak Chong-hi of South Korea and the North Korean seizure of the U.S.S. Pueblo. Actually these recent incidents are merely widely publicized symptoms of a ten dency which has characterized North Korean Communism from its inception and will characterize it for the foreseeable future — an aggressive drive to reunify Korea under Socialist leadership. This aggressive drive presents a real threat to South Korea and to American interests. The threat is more imposing by reason of North Korea's massive military built-up, the total indoctrination and sys tematic regimentation of its citizenry, the establishment of an effec tive chain of command from Kim Il-song downward, and continuing war talk in P'yong-yang, the capital of North Korea. -

For the most important events in a person’s life, such as wedding or funeral, people use color to symbolize their identities or roles. Traditionally, the colors of dress had indicated the wearer’s age, class, or marital status in Korea. However, Korea’s ex- posure to western cultures has affected in many dimensions of its modern history. Especially, influenced by social change, the traditional dress has undergone many modifications in forms, silhouettes, materials, and color. However, women’s mourning dress has been maintained as a long lasting tradition and the use of white in mourning dress has been regarded as a norm until recently, while men have worn a regular black suit with a black tie. But, the shift from white to black in mourning dress has been ob- served in recent mourning practices. To examine this change of color in Korean traditional mourning dress, a historical approach utilizing multiple resources, such as interview, observations of events, docu- ments, and archival records was applied.
