Se trata de una publicación de referencia en el campo de los Estudios Norteamericanos en España que admite artículos de distintos ámbitos de conocimiento dentro de las Ciencias Sociales y las Humanidades, como historia, política, economía, sociología, arte, educación, literatura y lingüística. REDEN es una publicación oficial del Instituto Franklin (fundado originalmente como “Centro de Estudios Norteamericanos” en 1987); un organismo propio de la Universidad de Alcalá que obtuvo el estatus de “Instituto Universitario de Investigación” en el 2001 (Decreto 15/2001 de 1 de febrero; BOCM 8 de febrero del 2001, nº 33, p. 10). Su naturaleza, composición, y competencias se ajustan a lo dispuesto en los Estatutos de la Universidad de Alcalá de acuerdo al Capítulo IX: “De los Institutos Universitarios” (artículos del 89 al 103). El Instituto Franklin tiene como misión fundamental servir de plataforma comunicativa, cooperativa, y de unión entre España y Norteamérica, con el objetivo de promover el conocimiento mutuo. Madrid Huntington between Spain and the United States rcher M. Huntington (1870-1955), the museum-builder and A founder of the Hispanic Society of America in New York, had a lesser known complementary dimension as a cultural bridges-builder between Spain and the United States in moments of conflict and diplomatic tension. With an approach based on his social relations rather than on his artistic collections, this article offers an alternative reading in which Huntington ABSTRACT emerges as a friendly figure in bilateral relations who did not passively accept the status quo and who, from the standpoint of culture, contributed to modifying the image of Spain that prevailed in the United States. Key Words: Hispanism, Hispanic Society of America, Archer Huntington, Spanish culture, cultural diplomacy, bilateral relations INTRODUCTION: TO FACE THE CLIMATE As it is hard to see the forest for the trees, it seems particularly hard to envisage more than an exquisite art collector in Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955), the founder of The Hispanic Society of America. Volumen 1 are unparalleled in their scope and quality: holding more than 30.000 objects including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, ironworks, textiles, jewellery; 175.000 photographs of Spain and Latin America and a library with more than 250.000 books and newspapers, including 15.000 volumes printed before 1701 (Codding). Works by Velázquez, El Greco, Goya and Sorolla hang on its walls today while a copy of El Quijote, unique in the world, is kept on its shelves. It is a collection of incalculable value that covers almost twenty centuries of Iberian history and addresses nearly every aspect of culture in Spain, as well as a large part in Portugal and Latin America. Thanks to Huntington’s diaries (1898), we know today that he took on this project guided by the romantic aspiration of condensing the soul of Spain in a museum: “It must condense the soul of Spain into meanings, through works of the hand and spirit”1. With deep determination and commitment, he advanced Hispanic Studies in the United States more than any other individual during the first half of the twentieth century. Su padre fue el zoólogo y paleontólogo Alpheus Hyatt, profesor en la Universidad de Harvard y el MIT. Anna Hyatt estudió en el Art Students League de Nueva York y en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Syracuse y se formó con varios escultores, entre los cuales Gutzon Borglum. Influida por la actividad de su padre, su interés por la fauna se manifestó tempranamente. Empezó a exponer su obra en 1898 y en 1906 ya había alcanzado una reputación como escultora animalística. Vivió en Europa de 1906 a 1908 y en 1910 obtuvo una mención de honor en el Salón de París con la estatua ecuestre de Juana de Arco, que se erigió en Riverside Drive, Nueva York, en 1915. Las estatuas ecuestres heroicas constituyen de hecho una parte impor- tante y reconocida en su trayectoria artística.     La resurrección de El Cid. Anna Hyatt Huntington, escultora Mariángeles Pérez Martín Departamento de Historia del Arte Universitat de València, España [email protected] El 4 de noviembre de 1927, el periodista Marcial Rossell escribía una crónica en el diario La Nación sobre la estatua ecuestre del Cid que acababa de ser colocada en la fachada del Museo Hispánico de Nueva York. Patrocinada por el millonario hispanófilo Archer Milton Huntington (1870- 1955) fundador de la Hispanic Society of America, la estatua del Campeador daría emoción a aquel rincón tranquilo. Según la descripción que realizaba el cronista “el Cid refrena con una mano los ágiles vigores de su corcel, mientras con la otra sostiene en alto una lanza”. El personaje del Campeador – afirma– había sido “hecho gloria por el genio y el entusiasmo de una dama egregia por su posición social y por su apellido”: Anna Hyatt (1876-1973). La escultora norteamericana, tras casarse con Huntington compartió el amor del filántropo por la literatura hispana y, sobre todo, por El poema del mío Cid, que él tradujo y editó. La estatua se ubicó en la Audubon Terrace junto a otras figuras de la hispanidad. Para Rossell, la gallardía del Cid era símbolo de la España de 1927, en la que despertaba el patriotismo “que una mano poderosa está forjando sobre el yunque del nuevo orden nacional”. El Cid había resucitado donde menos podía esperarse, a orillas del Hudson. Una resurrección doble, pues, al mismo tiempo que en Nueva York, una réplica se levantó en España. Así, en una plaza de Sevilla, “por el genio y el amor de una mujer de América” admirarían al Cid convertido en bronce quienes visitasen la futura Exposición.
