As an example of this world-wide turmoil, the objective of this article is to analyse the trajectory of the character Christine Daaé in Gaston Leroux’s The phantom of the opera (1911) and in the homonymous cinematographic adaptation of 2004 in order to investigate how the author and narrator manage to subvert Mademoiselle Daaé’s representation by making usage of Gothic elements, such as the frame of a story within a story, the resource of the unspeakable, and the dichotomy of the surface and the profound (SEDGWICK, 1986) along with the symbolism of colour in media transposition. Both the literary piece and the film adaptation illustrate the major turning point in the narrative, regarding Christine Daaé’s character due to the fact that Mademoiselle Daaé outbreaks from the character of the damsel in distress to the female hero, since she lies back on the novel structure she is inserted into, controlling the environment around her, and solving the problems and contradictions of the Gothic novel. Having been able to drastically change the literary field, the novel, as its own name suggests, brings about new themes to the reading audience of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Due to three major revolutions in this same period, first and second Industrial Revolutions and the French Revolution, it was no longer interesting for the modern man or woman to come in contact with nor to identify to the shallow characters represented in those poetic narratives, such as Homer’s The odyssey or the more contemporary John Milton’s Paradise lost. The Industrial Revolutions have become a highly important point in History since both movements have changed the old aristocratic manufacturing form of production to the new, faster, and more productive industrial form of production of the machinery of the brand new factories in Europe, being its starting point in England. As a consequence, it increased people’s income and their living conditions, making it possible for a middle class, a bourgeois class, to emerge along with and despite the efforts of the aristocracy to prevent this social movement of happening. The French Revolution, for that matter, has also contributed to these major changing in this new world order. Even though it was a local manifestation, it was able to reach and to influence the western world entirely due to the fact that, along with the ‘Declaration of the Rights of Man’, the recently emerged middle class conquered its rights, according to the departments of the law, granting a better quality of life in the new social order of the day. In this sense, we are introduced to literary works, such as Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719) and Moll Flanders (1722) that portray the common daily life along sided with their ordinary protagonists, demonstrating that it may not take a classical hero to overcome the contradictions and the obstacles of the path the characters must be confronted with. However, the novel arises in the literary field in order to fulfil the need for a new type of aesthetical representation, only does its function reach to some extent. According to Dr. Carol Margaret Davison (2009), the eighteenth century represents a moment and a period of trauma to the old English society, meaning, aristocracy, since its events had transformed the logics of every-day life. For instance, it was not necessary anymore to contrive in matrimony only to maintain the blood lineage and the family surname so that the assets and the estates remain in the same circles as if marriage was a contract among families. With better living conditions, the wedding ceremony became an option: people could finally choose to be united by passion. Along with it, the fear of the aristocracy of being surpassed by the new bourgeois class called forth for a stronger and deeper manner to keep on aesthetically representing the modern scenario. In this sense, the novel is the source to accomplish this task, while the emergence of the Gothic genre manages to be the means with which authors may depict the terrors and the horrors of this traumatic period by adding psychological depth to the characters instead of the extremely realistic tone the first novels would present, without hurting and breaking the literary decorum, exalting the sublime. 102 Itinerários, Araraquara, n. 47, p. 101-117, jul./dez. 2018 From the damsel in distress to the female hero: the wanderings of Christine Daaé in Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera and its last film adaptation The Gothic genre, then, emerges in the second half of the eighteenth century in England with the publication of Horace Walpole’s The castle of Otranto (1764), in which the author adds a subtitle to the literary piece: a gothic story (DAVISON, 2009). This particular work became a major influence to the western world widely due to the fact that it presents an exaggerated number of gothic elements that diverge immensely in the realm of the fantastic: from doors that open and close mysteriously by themselves to giant helmets falling from the sky without any explanation whatsoever. Although the Gothic genre is known to have been born in the British Islands, we may also find it crossing barriers and infiltrating borders, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Having received the influence of the German Schauerroman, the terror-novel, and the French Kannibalregiment and cannibalistic buveurs du sang terrors and horrors, we may come across with Gothic expressions in both countries. As the focus of this article is the French Gothic, only the latter will be worked with; according to Daniel Hall, fantastic literary manifestations that would later lead to the French Gothic may be encountered in the works of the precursor author Abbé Prévost in which: Prévost is arguably the one of the first, in France at least, to combine a serious examination of the human condition with adventures designed to move the reader. That he employs the melancholy to demonstrate his views about the human suffering, as well as to add to interest to his works, only serves to strengthen his position as an immediate and available point of reference for the authors who followed him with more, or less, scrupulous intent. Prévost’s importance lies in the development of the melancholy hero, of the proto-Sadistic villain, and above all in his position as ‘one of the first painters of the lugubrious and melancholic setting’. His combination of natural description with the uncertainty and fear of a sensible but thoughtful narrator is rendered all the more powerful because it is not overstated. (2005, p. 82-83). Differently from the English Gothic, the French torrent does not invest primarily in elements of physical and material terror and horror, such as the presence of ghosts or monsters. French Gothic dedicated its efforts of depiction and fidelity to the psychological depth and the relationships among characters in order to portray the fears and the contradictions of such society. As the genre evolves and develops within time and space, we are led to the unfortunate women of Marquis de Sade up to the turning of the century, when we are presented to Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera (1911), which is the aim of this research. Due to the author’s journalistic tone, we are introduced to a story that is the gathering of information of a particular research made by an investigative reporter, who makes use of the legend of the phantom of the Opera House in Paris to picture a narrative of terror and horror, love and obsession. Thus, the objective of this article is to Itinerários, Araraquara, n. 47, p. 101-117, jul./dez. 2018 103 Caroline Navarrina de Moura, Lis Yana de Lima Martinez e Lucia Sá Rebello analyse the character of Christine Daaé, in the original novel and in the theatrical version of 2004, observing her actions throughout the story in order to investigate how the Gothic elements used by the author managed to exalt her character, turning Christine into the truthful male hero of the novel instead of the regular Gothic heroine we are familiar with. In order to do so, the concept of Gothic genre that this article relies on is the Freudian expression of Das Unheimlich: having explored several modern languages, such as English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and even the classic ones, Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Sanskrit, only the German language was able to provide the concept which has been translated into English as the ‘uncanny’ that means the particular object of even scenario that may seem familiar and cosy, but also the source of great terror and panic (FREUD, 1925).

Courses designed to teach psychopathology have used examples from the arts to emphasize major teaching points. This paper frames Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s stage theory of grief within selected scenes of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, The Phantom of the Opera, to achieve course objectives such as the etiology, course, and levels of severity of Major Depressive Disorder. Methods: Course content from our Psychopathology course was transformed into a dialogue between an examining psychiatrist and a Broadway performer who was in character. The performance was part of a special Grand Rounds reviewing the Mood Disorders. Results: Goals and objectives were readily achieved with over 450 faculties in attendance. Conclusions: Organizing a curriculum with performing arts is an innovative teaching method that allows for review of mental disorders such as those demonstrated in The Phantom of the Opera.     Master Phantoms of the Source Text : Retranslation and the English Translations of Gaston Leroux's Le Fantôme de l'Opéra HEWITT, Rachel Abstract The retranslation hypothesis as it is understood today states that later translations of a given text tend to be closer to the source text both in terms of language and cultural impact than earlier translations. This hypothesis stems from an essay written by Antoine Berman in 1990. However, it has since been challenged by a number of theorists. This paper discusses the retranslation hypothesis and the criticism it has received. Through a critical analysis of Gaston Leroux's novel, Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, and its six English translations that span more than a century, this paper challenges the theories put forward by Berman in his essay and analyses various textual elements of Leroux's work and the choices made my those who translated it. (Phys. Rev. E 82:066114, 2010). Here, we interpret these relationships as connections on a graph of N players. These connections are then used in a variety of ways to define each player’s “sacred value network”—groups of individuals that are subject to special consideration or treatment by that player. We explore the effects on the dynamics of the system that these networks introduce, through various forms of protection from both victimization and punishment. Under local protection, these networks introduce a new fixed point within the game dynamics, which we find through a continuum approximation of the discrete game. Under more complicated, extended protec- tion, we numerically observe the emergence of criminal coalitions, or “gangs”. We also find that a high-crime steady state is much more frequent in the context of extended protection networks, in both the case of Erdos-Rényi˝ and small world random graphs. A collection of authentic, iconic horror and science fiction all depicting these concepts were the main attraction of Kirk Hammett’s appropriately titled “It’s Alive” at the Columbia Museum of Art. Yes, the Kirk Hammett of influential rock band Metallica had provided the artwork for this exhibit. His collection of horror movie memorabilia takes those who pay the $10 admission back in time to the era of the Great Depression, when horror was not meant to disturb and vomit- induce like today’s measly cash grabs. A plethora of vivid hand-drawn masterpieces meant to intrigue the audiences of the 1930s and 1940s brought a brightness and action to the grim, beastly antagonists of each iconic film, characterizing them in such a way that the movie itself does not even need to be seen. Haunting reds and greys for the infamous Frankenstein invoked enough fear to remind me of when I was six-years-old, hiding my face in my dad’s shoulder at the sight of monsters on film. It was a trip down memory lane for the horror movie fanatic in me contrasted with gorgeous and vintage art that pleased my hipster aesthetic. I made sure to stop at every poster, smiling as names like Karloff and Fonda appeared on posters of movies I grew up watching with my dad and my brother. The older posters of the collection, those whose cast almost always included Karloff, had very distinct, artistic lines, flowing effortlessly to create a colorful rendering of the film’s main social commentary, while the newer ones experimented with photo editing, showcasing the shifting form of art within the theatrical world.

SOLIS Capstone Director: Dr. Lantzas Mythology is arguably the most powerful source of influencing and shaping society’s gender roles and beliefs; additionally, mythology provides an accurate reflection of society’s gender roles, general attitudes, fears, and preoccupations. Young boys and girls learn how to negotiate a complex world of possibilities, as well as manage gender expectations through observing gods, superheroes, and other notable characters found in mythological stories. American mythology, to include comic books, the superheroes upon which the literature is based, and the associated cartoons, motion pictures, merchandize, and fashion, contributes to an historical foundation of misogynistic entertainment and serves as didactic material for children and adults. The misogynistic nuances of the comic book storyline are not overt attempts at relegating women; instead, the influence is much more subtle and older than American mythology; rather, this debilitating feature is embedded in our psyche. Although the first comic book was printed in ii 1938, American mythology is largely influenced by Greek mythology, a major influence on western civilization. Overt and subtle misogynistic nuances have always existed in the patriarchal narrative of mythology, American, Greek, and beyond.
