Socio-economics of trawl fisheries in Sout ISSN 2070-6103 50 FAO FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE PROCEEDINGS FAO FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE PROCEEDINGS 50 50 Socio-economics of trawl fisheries in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea Proceedings of the Regional Workshop on Trawl Fisheries Socio-economics 26-27 October 2015 Da Nang, Vietnam Socio-economics of trawl and Socio-economic Write-shop 25-26 April 2016 fisheries in Southeast Asia and Cha Am, Thailand Socio-economic surveys were carried out in pilot sites in Papua New Guinea (Gulf of Papua Prawn Fishery), Philippines (Samar Sea), Papua New Guinea Thailand (Trat and Chumphon) and Viet Nam (Kien Giang) under the project, Strategies for trawl fisheries bycatch management (REBYC-II CTI), funded by the Global Environment Facility and executed by FAO. In Indonesia, no study was conducted owing to the ban on trawl Proceedings of the Regional Workshop on Trawl Fisheries Socio-economics fisheries beginning January 2015. However, a paper based on key 26-27 October 2015 informant interviews was prepared. The socio-economic studies were Da Nang, Viet Nam undertaken to understand the contribution of trawl fisheries to food and security and livelihoods and determine the potential impacts of Socio-economic Write-shop management measures on stakeholder groups. Among the 25-26 April 2016 socio-economic information collected were the following: Cha Am, Thailand demographic structure of owners and crew; fishing practices – boat, gear, season, duration; catch composition, value chain and markets; contribution to livelihoods, food security and nutrition; role of women; heast Asia and Papua New Guinea costs and income from trawling; catch/income sharing arrangements; linkages with other sectors; and perceptions – resources, participation, compliance and the future.

Monthly Regional Webpage Update MONTH: JUNE 2018 PECI Activities 1. On June 14, 2018, at around 2:30 o’clock in the afternoon, Dir. Edgar T. Jubay together with the PDEA RO8-Leyte Provincial Office Personnel proceeded to Municipal Covered Court Alangalang, Leyte and facilitated the Declaration of the said Municipality. The activity was attended by members of the Oversight Committee of Alangalang Leyte wherein, they gave their respective messages in relation to the significant event. Also present during the declaration were the Barangay Chairmen of the aforementioned Municipality who served as witnesses in the said declaration. 2. Dir. Edgar T. Jubay Spearheaded the Mandatory Drug Test among PDEA RO8 Personnel held at PDEA RO8 office on June 25, 2018 from 12:00 NN- 5:00PM. The said activity was made to ensure that all personnel are all drug-free. The Test yields negative results. 3. In connection to the IDADAIT Celebration, Dir Edgar T. Jubay led the PDEA 16th Year Anniversary-Appreciation Ceremony held at PDEA Regional Office VIII on June 25, 2018 from 9:00AM-12:00NN. The said activity was attended by Distinguished Guests, Stakeholders, Media Representatives, and the personnel of PDEA RO8. 4. Ms. Rogelette T. Urgel, Information Officer/Chief in Preventive Education and Community Involvement Section of PDEA RO8 attended the Dangerous Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program- Technical Working Group meeting which was attended by the DDAPTP-TWG members held at DOH Regional Office VIII, Tacloban City from 11:00AM- 2:00PM on 28th of June 2018. THE Countryside Development RESEARCH JOURNAL Status and Potentials of Ecotourism Sites in Samar Philippines Ronald L. Orale Samar State University, Catbalogan City, Philippines [email protected] Abstract Samar is the third largest island in the Philippines blessed with world- class, less known ecotourism destination like highly diverse forest/ reefs, gigantic caves, waterfalls, beaches, etc. Tourist arrival share attributed mostly to the private sector remains very low because of poor intervention especially from the local government. Private-led initiatives to promote Samar’s world-class sites are relatively successful, bringing in tourists from all over the world. Samar’s ecotourism sites are rated by these tourists higher in terms of panoramic appeal but poor in terms of accessibility; support structure, services and facilities compared to the more known and government-supported destinations in the Philippines. Samar Island towns are one of the poorest in the Philippines. Increasing tourist arrival through improved government intervention will result into a better economic activity which will potentially reduce the poverty level in the three provinces of Samar.
