Senzo Tanaka Research

Here are the public findings on Senzo Tanaka and other related materials. All links related to this research will be posted below with corresponding links numbered in parenthesis. I would like to thank a dear friend who chooses to remain nameless for his collaboration and supporting findings regarding the Tanaka clan research.

We decided to see if it was possible to actually find documents or anything providing proof of Senzo Tanaka, Hanshi Frank Dux’s Ninjutsu instructor. Our means of research are only limited to the Internet as I live in a rural area and don’t have the ability to go to travel or visit Japan. One of our passions is genealogy and we thought we would try that approach with researching Senzo Tanaka. We really only had his name, a rough age, where he resided in California, and a rough date of when he passed away.

We started out with a simple search in familysearch.com of Senzo Tanaka and inputted the death year. We then found a death certificate through their site (Link #1). There we was given a date of birth (19 December 1888), the date he passed away (September of 1975), and his age (87 years old). In familysearch’s death record there is a zip code of XX723. We believe that is actually 90723, a zip code in Los Angeles County, California. Once we had that information we was able to do a more precise search. We entered in the newfound information and was given an immigrant passenger list from Japan to San Francisco, California (Link #2). Now we had his place of birth, and as you can see he was from Kumamoto, Japan. Doing a little more searching we found that Senzo had made his way to Hawaii in 1906 with another Tanaka, Shigigie Tanaka (Link #2A). This is extremely exciting and we will explain more later. I also was able to locate a draft registry for him (Link #3). There you can see he registered for the draft at age 53.

Now we’re going to get a little bit more in depth about the area of Japan in which Senzo Tanaka is from. As mentioned before he was born in Kumamoto, Japan, and Kumamoto is in the island of Kyushu, Japan. He has also listed himself as a farmer, which gets more interesting. Looking at Kumamoto (Link #4), and the rich Japanese history there. There was a Chinese immigration after the fall of the T’ang Dynasty, Korean and Mongolian invasions. There were farmer uprisings and one particular referred to as Shimabara Rebellion. Then you have Miyamoto Musashi Japan’s most famous ronin samurai. He spent his final years in Kumamoto and wrote his book of the five rings there (Link #5). Also in Kumamato is Kumamoto Castle one of Japan’s National historical sites (Link #6). Many battles and samurai clans were a big part of this castles history. It also has a very “The Last Samurai,” the movie feel to it (Link #7).

More interesting facts about Kyushu and a group called the Kokuryūkai (Black Dragon Society). Its membership included Cabinet Ministers and high-ranking military officers as well as professional secret agents, Senzo Tanaka, and Frank Dux are both members of the Kokuryūkai. The Kokuryūkai was founded by Uchida Ryohei in 1901. Uchida Ryohei was born in Kyushu, Japan and the same area Senzo was last seen in Japan. Another Kokuryūkai member is Akashi Motojiro who is also from Kyushu, Japan. Akashi is a documented spy and has been dubbed the “James Bond” of Japan. Then there is Takayoshi Tanaka who was born in Kyushu, Japan and also a documented spy.

The Kokuryūkai had a strong presence in California during WWII and in both locations Senzo was living. Here are links documenting the Kokuryūkai in Northern and Southern California by the San Francisco museum and FBI (Link #14 and Link #15). The FBI arrested a newspaper journalist by the name of Togo Tanaka. Togo was said by the FBI to be a Kokuryūkai member. Togo was visiting in Northern California (same area Senzo lived) when arrested and they placed him in the Manzanar internment camp. Togo wrote articles about Kokuryūkai flying their flags and marching in the camp trying to gain supporters. Its also very plausible that Senzo and Togo were related. Although Togo was born in Oregon, his parents were from Kumamoto, Kyushu. Also after WWII Senzo resides in Southern California where there is Togo Tanaka, Kokuryūkai, and later his student Frank Dux.

We would like to touch on the Yamabushi and some other points in this section. Yamabushi are mentioned in three important documents relating to Ninjutsu and its feudal era. First you can find them mentioned in the Bansenshukai Japan’s premier ninja manual in the Bakemono Jutsu section. Second is in the Shoninki another important ninja manual and mentioned in esoteric teachings/spirituality section. Third you can find the Yamabushi in Japanese warrior monks 949- 1603 book. Tanaka’s style was Koka Yamabushi Ryu Ninjustsu. There is and was a strong presence of the Yamabushi in Kyushu, Japan (Link #8). In fact Mt. Hiko is only about two hours away from Kumamoto. Mt. Hiko has a good amount of Yamabushi doing ceremonial hikes, and is considered one of the most holiest places in Japan. Also near Nagasaki, Japan there is the last Tanaka clan member Emiko Tanaka who still teaches Ninjutsu. Another interesting fact is where Emiko resides is only about two hours away from Senzo’s birthplace. Lastly, Senzo traveled in 1906 with Shigigie Tanaka. Shigigie was a member of the Tanaka’s who brought Koka Ryu Ha Kurokawa Ninjutsu to Brazil (Please refer to the Tanaka Clan Research for a more in depth look).

This is where we’d like to put everything together. Senzo Tanaka was a farmer from Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan. An area with some great historical significance. There were samurai, ronin samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, farmer uprisings, Chinese, Korean, and Mongolian influences, battles, religious uprisings, Yamabushi priest, and a surviving Tanaka member who caries on ninjutsu still today in Kyushu. He was a member of the Kokuryūkai, an organization with members who were spies, and from the same parts of Japan as Tanaka. Senzo leaves Japan to come to America. He travels with another Koka Ryu Ninjutsu practitioner. While in America the United States enters World War II due to the bombings of Pearl Harbor. Senzo has to register into the draft as to show proof renouncing any allegiance to the Emperor of Japan (Link #9 & Link #3). Then he is not on any documents we can find until his passing in 1975 and his last residence in Los Angeles. Interesting enough that is the same area where Frank Dux learns Ninjutsu from Senzo Tanaka. It all sounds very secret squirrel ninja to us.

Lastly we’d like to say that we did our best to find actual facts from familysearch.com. We’ve had many setbacks in the research of this data. A lot due to people wanting to embellish, make their own history, and/or not taking the time to verify their findings. We will continue to try and research more, making sure we’re not providing wrong information. Speaking of embellishing and making their own history. A lot of people specifically the ones who are in my beliefs rogue Bujinkan and BSMA (stands for: Bullshit Martial Arts) members like to tear everyone down who does not support their cause. We have found them trying to rewrite history through Wiki, and on witch-hunts for anyone claiming Koka ninja lineage (Link #10, Link #11, Link #12, and Link #13). In there you will find a member of both the Bujinkan and BSMA Simon Edwards talking about the need to rewrite wiki so it coincides with their history. Then you will see Simon Edwards’s email under the change in Koka History on Wiki. The other two are them mocking the deceased Dan Harmon, and the last one is from Colorado Springs Bujinkan and all their propaganda. Their main arguments are usually with Seiko Fujita’s comments that he didn’t leave a successor. Hopefully this might help others to see their wrong doings, possibly let go of the fact Fujita is not the only one who taught Koka ninjutsu, and help them change…….one can hope.

This report was done to research the historical contributions of the Tanaka clan that is associated with Frank Dux along with the historical contributions that the Tanaka clan has made to the martial arts of Japan and to the history of Japan in general.
