Nino Schembri Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Nino schembri brazilian jiu jitsu Continue A very early pioneer in jiu-jitsu, Nino invented and popularized many of the techniques that are in everyone's game today. It is best known for its use of homo dress, which has not previously been seen as an effective technique. Nino used his flexibility and creativity to greatly add to the setups and sweep options from the core Omoplata presentation. In addition to the Omoplata, often referred to as king, Nino was one of the first grapplers recorded with the help of the Lasso Guard, the Resin Guard, and the Goghoplat. Nino really is one of the great innovators from the early days of sport, his name may not be that well known anymore, but his influence will forever be felt on BJJ mats. Achievement Nino is a true innovator of the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which has helped popularize many positions still used today. Nino is often considered one of the best guard players of all time. He revolutionized Omoplata by transforming it from a low representation percentage into a whole system of attacks and sweeps. He was one of the first to use lasso Guard and was one of the first users of what would become a rubber guard. Along with his constant innovations, Nino was also a major competitor, winning numerous MMA titles and fights throughout his career. 1998 World Champion 1997 World Champion 1996 Brazilian National Champion - Absolute Division Nino Schembri Omoplata Terror Instruction Nino has been teaching jiu-jitsu full time since 2004, when he became a BJJ instructor at the Chute Box Academy in Brazil. During his time at Chute Box he will coach some of the best names in the sport including; Vanderlei Silva, Ninja Rua and his brother Shogun even awarded the shogun with his black belt after winning the middleweight title in 2005. After several years with Chute Box Nino decided to leave to open his own academy in Londale California, where he continues to teach today. KILLER BUTTERFLY and HUMAN CRUCIFIX 3 DVD SET BY NINO SCHEMBRI always innovative Nino SCHEMBRI returns with a 3 DVD set covering submissions from crucifixes and butterfly sweeps. BUY NOW Nino Elvis Schembri Nino Schembri was born on June 1, 1974 in Rio de Janeiro, he grew up in a traditional Italian family, his father was born in Italy, and often worked in the family street market, helping his father sell blankets. He started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the age of five under Marcelo and Silvio Bering in the New Ipanema area of Rio de Janeiro, and at the age of 13 began his elite training under Jorge Pereira, who helped develop his early game. As an 18-year-old blue belt, he moved to Gracie Barr Academy to study with master Carlos Gracie Jr. and Renzo After two years of training at Gracie Barr Academy, he was promoted to the black belt and began his search for Almost every Brazilian jiu-jitsu title. Nino was an image that was the exact opposite of the traditional jiu-jitsu playboy troublemaker of the 1990s. The image of the unfavorable with jiu-jitsu sponsors for years because of the wrong doing of many gangs of Rio de Janeiro Schembri was one of many good names in the sport who fought against the bad image of some jiu-jitsu fighters. Nino was a phenomenal competitor who was well known for his amazing flexibility and even more amazing creativity, being one of the first to really make an offensive guard, attacking with previously unheralded Omoplata and Gogoplatas. Before Nino Omoplata was simply seen as a lower representation percentage. He was there and taught in most training programs, but no one even tried them in competitions. Carlson Gracie is the best student of Otavio 'Peixotinho' even said in an interview for BJJHeros that; The homolate existed, but it lacked efficiency. It was something you'd try in training, but not in comps. I've seen Rickson and Rolls competing many times, even they won't use it. It wasn't until 1994, when a rule change allowed omoplata sweep to actually score, as a sweep of what things for this once unloved submission began to change. This very important rule change just happened when Nino was revolutionizing the game guard and many began to see the power of Omoplata. Nino opened the eyes of many fighters to the effectiveness of the position, not only using it as a subordination, but also as a preparation for stripping, armrest, choke and other positions. In addition to the innovations made by Nino, many others have added their input, making Omoplata one of the most commonly used attacks in modern jiu-jitsu. In 2001, Nino decided to try mixed martial arts. He debuted on the world's biggest stage, Pride 14, against Luta Livre fighter Johil de Oliveira winning the armrest in the first round. In his third Pro fight, Nino would score a TKO victory over MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba. Unfortunately, in 2004, Father Nino began his life. It absolutely devastated Nino and he admits his focus has completely disappeared and he is unlikely to train consistently. But he was still taking fights to pay his bills. During this time his record suffered, leaving him with a 5-5 MMA record. But in 2010 he returned to the jiu-jitsu mats and his winning ways. He said he was finally healed mentally by the tragic loss of his father.

Sport Department 2014 Annual Report February 2015 | Rio de Janeiro Sport Department 2014 Annual Report February 2015 | Rio de Janeiro © Getty Images/Christian Petersen Rio de Janeiro, February 2015 In 2014, the Sport team continued its transition from the planning to the operational phase without looking back, focusing on the goal of delivering excellent Games. In doing so, I can say with great pride that the department continues to solidify its position as a leader within the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Throughout 2014, the Sport department grew and underwent important changes. In July, Rodrigo Garcia was appointed as Sport Director to enhance and facilitate interaction within the team, as well as to help take the lead on key decisions that impact Sport within the Organising Committee. I am also happy to report that the majority of the Sport managers are now on board full-time, while other areas within the department continue to welcome new members. As the department grew, it also expanded its knowledge and strengthened its relationship with other FAs, showing that we serve as a reference base for planning and operations in other areas throughout the committee. Rio 2016 Sport continued to build its relationship with the International Federations (IFs), maintaining a close partnership and working together to meet their needs and expectations, in order to be able to assist in successfully delivering the test events and Games. The Aquece Rio International Sailing Regatta 2014, the first test event, was held in August at Marina da Glória, just one of many major events for us.
