Due to unrelenting bombings by the alien race known as "Gamilas," the planet can no longer sustain its inhabitants. In exactly one year, humanity is set to become extinct. In desperation, the people of Earth establish the Earth Defense Force, their last defense against the power-hungry Gamilas Empire. However, humanity finds a glimmer of hope after receiving a message from the mysterious planet Iscandar, which offers them a device that would restore Earth to its former glory. With salvation in sight, the Earth Defense Force calls on the prolific Space Battleship Yamato and swiftly assembles a crew to make the 148,000 light-year trek to Iscandar and receive their aid. Among the crew are young officers Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima, along with several other newly promoted leaders, all under the command of the distinguished Captain Juuzou Okita. Forced to learn how to handle the ship's innovative technology while dealing with the onslaught of Gamilas fleets, the inexperienced cast of Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 must summon every inch of their resolve to survive the many hardships aboard the Yamato and complete their mission: to save humanity before it's too late. Star Blazers is the English adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato (宇宙戦艦ヤマト Uchū Senkan Yamato ) and its two sequel series. Star Blazers was first broadcast in the United States on syndication in 1979. Significantly, it was the first popular English-translated anime that had an overarching plot and storyline (story arc) that required the episodes to be shown in order. It dealt with somewhat more mature themes than other productions aimed at the same target audience at the time. As a result, it paved the way for future arc-based, plot-driven anime translations. In the year 2199, a starship must make a dangerous voyage to the distant planet Iscandar and back to save Earth from an alien invasion. Contents. Dubbing History. Space Battleship Yamato was initially identified as a potential "kids property" by the Westchester Corporation, who bought the rights for the first two series. Dubbing and editing were done by Griffin-Bacal Advertising and production and syndication was handled by Claster Television. The dub was comprised of mainly newcoming actors (including future Transformers and G.I. Joe voice actor Chris Latta) based in New York, and was recorded at Filmsounds, Inc. with voice direction done by Tom Griffin and Ellen S. Leinoff. [1] Due to its non-union status, none of the voice actors were given any credit. Many of the voice actors were discovered later, starting when Amy Howard Wilson (voice of Nova) discovered the devoted online community in the late 90’s. Most of the voices are still unknown or unconfirmed. Marketed to a school-age audience, Space Battleship Yamato was bowdlerized in editing in order to satisfy the broadcast standards and practices offices of American television stations. The main changes included westernization of character names, reduction of personal violence, toning down of offensive language and alcohol use, removal of sexual fan service and reduction to references to World War II. The Japanese language elements such as series title and scene captions were replaced or removed and new opening rolls were created featuring the Star Blazers logo.

Costellazione Manga: Explaining Astronomy Using Japanese Comics and Animation Resources Daria Dall’Olio Piero Ranalli Keywords Onsala Space Observatory, Chalmers Combient AB, Göteborg, Sweden; Public outreach, science communication, University of Technology, Sweden; Lund Observatory, Sweden informal education, planetarium show, ARAR, Planetarium of Ravenna and ASCIG, Italy [email protected] learning development [email protected] Comics and animation are intensely engaging and can be successfully used to communicate science to the public. They appear to stimulate many aspects of the learning process and can help with the development of links between ideas. Given these pedagogical premises, we conducted a project called Costellazione Manga, in which we considered astronomical concepts present in several manga and anime (Japanese comics and animations) and highlighted the physics behind them. These references to astronomy allowed us to introduce interesting topics of modern astrophysics and communicate astronomy-related concepts to a large spectrum of people. In this paper, we describe the methodology and techniques that we developed and discuss the results of our project. Depending on the comic or anime considered, we can introduce general topics such as the difference between stars, planets and galaxies or ideas such as the possibility of finding life on other planets, the latest discoveries of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars or the detection of complex organic molecules in the interstellar space. When presenting the night sky and the shapes of constellations, we can also describe how the same stars are perceived and grouped by different cultures. The project outcomes indicate that Costellazione Manga is a powerful tool to popularise astronomy and stimulate important aspects of learning development, such as curiosity and crit- ical thinking.

Proselytization by fans ignited the anime movement in America, despite Japanese copyright holders’ abandonment of the American market. The author presents an historical and legal analysis to demonstrate that, at least in one case spanning two decades, fans’ continual infringement of copyright spurred the progress of commerce and the arts. 1 MIT Japan Program Working Paper Series 04.02 Center for International Studies Massachusetts Institute of Technology Room E38-7th Floor Cambridge, MA 02139 Phone: 617-252-1483 Fax: 617-258-7432 Date of Publication: November 2, 2004 © Sean Leonard 2 Table of Contents 1. Japan Focus Article 03/10/2006 12:15 PM JapanFocus.org World War II as Trauma, Memory and Fantasy in Japanese Animation By Susan J. Napier In her book Hiroshima Traces Lisa Yoneyama discusses how recent scholarship has tended to define memory in opposition to history, suggesting that “Memory has often been associated with myth or fiction and contrasted with History as written by professionals. [1] Yoneyama herself problematizes this opposition as a “false dichotomy,” stating that “the production of knowledge about the past … is always enmeshed in the exercise of power and is always accompanied by elements of repression.” [2] She exhorts her readers to remember that, “we begin our investigations into the past with an awareness that historical ‘reality’ can only be made available to us through the mediation of given categories of representation and processes of signification.” [3] This article examines how one of the most significant events in modern Japanese history, defeat in the Second World War, is represented through the medium of animation, a medium which allows history and memory to transform into myth and even into fantasy, ultimately creating for the viewer an experience which allows for a working through of what might be called historical trauma. Japanese popular culture has engaged with memories of the Second World War since at least the early 1950’s when the first Godzilla (Gojira) film took on atomic testing, wholesale destruction and the American enemy in the form of a kaiju eiga or monster movie. Japanese manga (comic books) have revisited WWII often, especially in the works of Matsumoto Leiji whose depictions of aerial dogfights and last minute sacrifices gained a wide following.

ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s.

  • Anime in Academia: Representative Object, Media Form, and Japanese Studies
arts Article Anime in Academia: Representative Object, Media Form, and Japanese Studies Jaqueline Berndt Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies, Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm, Sweden; [email protected] Received: 8 August 2018; Accepted: 28 September 2018; Published: 30 September 2018 Abstract: The transcultural consumption of Japan-derived popular media has prompted a significant amount of academic research and teaching. Instead of addressing globalization or localization as such, this article investigates the interplay of anime research and the institution of Japanese studies outside of Japan, addressing recurrent methodological issues, in particular, related to representation and mediation, intellectual critique and affective engagement, subculture and national culture. The inclination towards objects and representation in socio-cultural as well as cinema-oriented Japanese-studies accounts of anime is first introduced and, after considering discursive implications of the name anime, contrasted with media-studies approaches that put an emphasis on relations, modalities, and forms. In order to illustrate the vital role of forms, including genre, similarities between TV anime and Nordic Noir TV drama series are sketched out. Eventually, the article argues that the study of anime is accommodated best by going beyond traditional polarizations between text and context, media specificity and media ecology, area and discipline. Keywords: anime; media; Japanese studies; TV studies 1. Introduction The transcultural consumption of popular media from Japan, which this thematic issue of Arts addresses, is not only a matter of global markets and fan cultures; it also includes academia. Academic knowledge production has almost always been striving for transcultural relevance. More recently, considerations of students’ transcultural media experiences have also been brought to the fore, motivated by critical, cultural-studies shaped intention and/or economic necessity.

  • Authenticity from Cartoons: U. S. Japanaese Animation Fandom As An
AUTHENTICITY FROM CARTOONS: U. S. JAPANAESE ANIMATION FANDOM AS AN AGENCY OF INFORMAL CULTURAL EDUCATION by BRENT M. ALLISON (Under the Direction of Judith Preissle) ABSTRACT This ethnography explores how North American fans of Japanese animation or anime are engaging in pedagogical practices. Anime increasingly attracts many North American fans that have had little or no previous direct exposure to Japanese culture. Many fans watch and discuss anime with other fans within an interactive subculture called anime fandom. U.S. anime fandom can be interpreted as a site of informal cultural education wherein participants teach and learn about anime and Japanese culture as a means of making sense of them. Little research has been done on anime fandom as an agency of pedagogy. Therefore, this study focuses on how North American fans of anime learn to become anime fans, and what they learn in this process. It also addresses how fans of anime create, sustain, and change meanings associated with anime and Japan within anime fandom. Finally, it explores how anime fans negotiate traditional sites of sociocultural consensus and conflict found in U.S. social hierarchies. The research uses an ethnography of one anime club, an ethnographic study of a second club, and interviews of participants at anime fan conventions to address these issues. The methods involved are primarily interviews and participant observation. The findings illustrate that most anime fans are attracted to anime because they admire visuals used in anime, they favor anime series with narrative arcs stretching across several episodes, and they form attachments to anime characters that develop and change.
