Mayflowers in theVille Lumière: the Dawning of Bahá’í History in the European Continent1 Julio Savi Against the background of the Paris of the fin de siècle and of the Belle Époque, with its magnificent intellectual and artistic efflorescence, a young American lady becomes the catalyst for the spiritual awakening of a group of early God-intoxicated believers. The paper emphasizes their human characters and the mysterious ways through which they, lovingly steered by a subtle, omnipresent and all-guiding Will, came to recognize the dawn of the new era on the European continent and on the whole world. The nineteenth century of the Christian era was drawing to a close when a young woman from the town of Englewood, New Jersey, on the outskirts of New York City, arrived in Paris, on the banks of the Seine. Her family name was Bolles and her name was Mary Ellis(1870–1940), but she was known as May, a name evoking the thought of advanced springtime, multicolored roses, mild breezes, refreshing showers. Randolph, her brother, had decided to study architecture and his family had chosen for him the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. There- fore in 1892–93, May, Randolph and their mother Mary Martha moved to the French capital. A subtle, omnipresent and all-guiding Will had decreed that their choice would open to the young woman a road, which would lead her to a great destiny, comprising “the priceless honor of a martyr’s death” in Argentina in 1940(Shoghí Effendí, qtd. in Holley, “May Ellis Maxwell” 642), if only she would understand the true meaning of events and seize her God-given 281 Lights of ‘Irfán Book Twelve opportunities. -

Bahá’u’lláh states that there are two things pleasing to God: the tears shed in fear of Him and the blood of the martyr spilt in His path. But since Bahá’u’lláh has advised His followers not to volunteer to give their lives, He has replaced it with teaching His Cause. Taherzadeh, The Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh, Volume II, p. 94 19. Ibn-I-Abhar went through a turbulent period soon after the death of his father in 1874. The details of the plots against him and the confiscation of all his possessions by his enemies are beyond the scope of this book. In 1876 he sent a letter to the presence of Bahá’u’lláh asking whether it was more meritorious to lay down one’s life for the love of God or to teach the Cause with wisdom and the power of utterance. In a Tablet Bahá’u’lláh counselled him that the latter was preferable. Taherzadeh, The Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh, Volume IV, p. 305 20. O Son of Man! By my beauty! To tinge thy hair with thy blood is greater in My sight than the creation of the universe and the light of both worlds. Strive then to attain this, O servant!1 By replacing this greatest act of devotion with teaching the Cause, Bahá’u’lláh has discouraged his followers from seeking martyrdom. Instead He has commanded them to devote their entire lives to teaching His Cause to the whole human race. -

Much effort has gone into making it as accurate as possible. However, there are difficulties in dating some events, particularly in the early period, to which the reader’s attention is drawn. Moojan Momen notes in The Bábí and Bahá’í Religions, 1844–1944: Some Contemporary Western Accounts that … many of those who could have provided the most detailed knowledge of important episodes have died without recording their memoirs. Much of what was written in the way of historical accounts was recorded many years after the events took place. Thus most of Nabíl’s Narrative is the record of what Nabíl and his informants at a relatively advanced age could remember of events that had occurred in their youth. -

As the title suggests, this volume invites the reader to accompany two heroic souls as they scale the rugged mountains on their approach to their Beloved: the father, Mírzá ‘Alí-Muḥammad, surnamed “Varqá” (Dove) by Bahá’u’lláh, and his young son, Rúḥu’lláh (meaning the “Spirit of God”). Both individuals figure prominently in Bahá’í history: Varqá, a Hand of the Cause of God, and a renowned teacher, poet and physician and in ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s words, an “incomparable person, a jewel of kindness”; and Rúḥu’lláh, a prodigy who was referred to as Jináb-i-Mubaligh (the Honourable Religious Teacher) by Bahá’u’lláh. -

SOME EARLY BELIEVERS IN THE WEST A transcript of audio-cassette from series WINDOWS TO THE PAST by Grace L. Shahrokh In this series of Windows to the Past, let us open this one to the West, and see how some spiritually distinguished souls caught the light of the earliest rays of the rising sun of Baha'u'llah's revelation coming from the East. Regrettably, because of limited time on audiotape, this presentation can tell you brief stories of only a few believers. Many other outstanding teachers and Hands of the Cause deserve to be remembered. Highlights of their lives can be found in volumes of The Baha'i World, an international record or in biographies. The following brief accounts are like gazing at a small portion of the brilliant galaxy of immortal heroines and heroes who devoted their energies, talents, their very lives to the Faith of Baha'u'llah. May the examples of devotion these souls bequeath to us inspire us to love and live the Faith with all the fervor of our hearts. THORNTON CHASE What a distinction! He is known as the first in the Western world to embrace the Cause of Baha'u'llah, the first American believer. Abdu'l-Baha called him Sabet, meaning Steadfast. Mr. Chase attended classes given by Ibrahim Kheiralla in Chicago in 1894 and 1895. While there were four others at the same time who professed to believe in Baha'u'llah, they did not remain committed to that belief as Mr. Chase did. His steadfastness earned him the distinction of being the first Baha'i in America.
