SIGNED: Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The story of this dissertation began in August 2008, when I walked into the first meeting of my Introduction to Linguistics class in the first semester of my time at Hunter College. I vividly remember the instructor walking in, dressed so stylishly, with her infant daughter sleeping in her arms. She set herself up at the podium and announced to the lecture hall, “alright y’all, who’s ready to do linguistics?” My immediate thought: “Ok, how do I be like HER when I grow up?!” While I like to think I have grown in to my own, unique version of a really cool linguist/anthropologist, it is simply impossible to overstate the importance that this person had on my intellectual, professional, and personal development. I therefore must begin this acknowledgements section by offering my deepest gratitude to Dr. Maryam Bakht. Your teaching, mentorship, and friendship over the last decade (!!!!!!) has made me a better person and scholar. I have so many things to thank you for, but here is a small selection: for letting me sit by you as you finished your own dissertation, which inspired me and convinced me that this was a challenge that I, too, could accomplish; for introducing me to hot yoga, which kept my mind and body healthy in chaotic times; for letting me into your family, which provided me with relaxing summer weekends and amazing food-eating opportunities; and for the gift of the electric milk frother for tea lattes, which really did help me power through the last few months of writing. Thank you forever. I owe an immense debt of gratitude to my advisors and my dissertation committee. Dr. Qing Zhang was my patient and encouraging advisor in the School of Anthropology. I’m incredibly grateful for the freedom and intellectual responsibility she gave me for my own work— being allowed to explore other disciplines and bodies of literature as I formed my dissertation ideas was, to put it simply, fun. I don’t think I would have enjoyed graduate school as much with an advisor pushing me to one project or another. Her support of my work has been invaluable, and the insights she added to this project improved it immensely. I often felt nervous going into a meeting with my advisor in the Department of Linguistics, Dr. Heidi Harley—but every time I’d leave, I felt focused, motivated, much clearer about the next steps. Heidi’s thoughtful engagement with my very sociolinguistic dissertation has been massively useful, and I am so grateful for her warm, kind mentorship. Also, once she called me a “demon of efficiency” and I have held on to that compliment every since. Dr. Ana Maria Carvalho, in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has been a supportive and motivational committee member since I asked her to join my Master’s paper committee several years ago. She helped me feel prepared for fieldwork, and has been an invaluable source of support during my first year on the job market. I’m so grateful for her confidence in me. Lastly, I thank Dr. Jennifer Roth-Gordon the School of Anthropology, for jumping into this committee somewhat late in the game and nevertheless giving every chapter her full and complete attention. Jen’s feedback was often the most incisive and difficult, but it was also some of the most important in helping me refine my thinking and writing. I know I have not fully addressed all the points Jen raised— but I’m grateful for this, too, as it means I have plenty more to chew on as I move forward in this research and my career. 4 Many other professors in both the Department of Linguistics and the School of Anthropology were important to my graduate career and development as a scholar. In particular, I thank Drs. Natasha Warner and Amy Fountain, for some of my first lessons in how to be a good instructor, and Dr. Norma Mendoza-Denton for her early support of my career and her encouragement to finally publish that little undergrad thesis. No one survives grad school without the administrative support staff in their departments. I am deeply, deeply grateful to Catherine Lehman, Rayshma Pereira, Verónica Peralta, Marian Wisely Kimberley Young, Stephanie Amado, and Shayna Walker for all the work they do/have done to keep our departments running, day-in and day-out. More than enough has been written about the challenges of maintaining good mental health in grad school. I don’t need to add anything to that, besides to say thank you to the folks who helped me keep my head and heart steady during the harder moments. To Lauren, Jennifer, all of the CAPS staff, and everyone in group (and special thanks to Megan here for taking me to my first appointment when I was scared)—I wouldn’t be here without you. Far and away the best part of graduate school has been the friendships I have developed with my brilliant cohort-mates and colleagues in both departments. Thanks to Shiloh, Nick, and Josh for being among my first friends and for the many (many) In-N-Out trips. Thanks to the members of the Ling Anth Lab over the last several years for incredible intellectual stimulation and support: Ashley, Maisa, Dana, Jessica, Keri, Jin, and everyone else. Thanks to my ANLI crew for really getting what’s it like—Serene, Maya, Priscilla, Maureen, Joe, Brian, Jess, and Bill. Special shout out to Jess and Bill for being incredible collaborators, co-authors, conference-mates, and letting me babysit your dogs. Thank you to the women of my writing group this last year—Sydney, Allison, and Amanda—for making me feel incredibly safe in sharing early drafts of this and related work, and reminding me that it is, actually, really interesting, plus all the wine and cocktails. Thank you to Ally and Tyanna for being lovely “non-UA” friends who have been incredibly generous with feedback on my work and their friendship; and thanks to all the other linguists and anthropologists who have been great fun on Twitter and other social media. Lastly, I have to thank my “Gang”—Shiloh, Megan, and Elise. The story of Gang is too long for this already too-long acknowledgements section, so I’ll just say thank you for being my rock(s) (and Elise, thanks for lending us your mom). Who knows where I’d be without y’all. I’m grateful for everything, and I love you. I’m also incredibly lucky to have a phenomenal slate of non-academic friends (for lack of a better term) who have providing grounding love and support, and very fun visits in which I was mostly able to put away the work. To the “Nasty Crew”—thanks for letting me spam y’all with snaps of the funniest parts of this dissertation, with special shout outs to Meaghan for my Harry Styles/1D education, and to Cristina for celebrating with me day I finished the first draft of this dissertation! To Sarah for 24-hour on-call availability for complain sessions and sending me lots of feminist memes. To Felicia for the thousands and thousands and thousands of words (seriously) of encouragement in more cards and letters than I can count. To Emma for oyster dates and beach trips during summers in NYC. To Livia S. for trans-Atlantic and trans- continental support—and for cooking up Nour who I am already wildly in love with! To Kate for all the soup dummies, for watching all the novelas I tell you to, and for waiting for me while I 5 was stuck on that really long bus ride (it was definitely worth it).
