The Stela of Khu-Sobek1 (Manchester Museum) This limestone stela of the Manchester Museum (measured 16.5 cm wide and 28 cm high) was found in Abydos in 1901 by J. Garstang.2 It is of poor quality but important since it records an early of war of Egypt with its northern enemies. I., . 1 / / ., l I. - ' PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION THEvolume here translated appeared originally in 1904 as one of the excellent series of handbooks which, in addition to descriptive catalogues, are ~rovidedby the Berlin Museums for the guida,nce of visitors to their great collections. The haud- book of the Egyptian Religion seemed cspecially worthy of a wide circulation. It is a survey by the founder of the modern school of Egyptology in Germany, of perhaps tile most interest- ing of all the departments of this subject. The Egyptian religion appeals to some because of its endless variety of form, and the many phases of superstition and belief that it represents ; to others because of its early recognition of a high moral principle, its elaborate conceptions of a life aftcr death, and its connection with the development of Christianity; to others again no doubt because it explains pretty things dear to the collector of antiquities, and familiar objects in museums. Professor Erman is the first to present the Egyptian religion in historical perspective; and it is surely a merit in his worlc that out of his profound knowledge of the Egyptian texts, he permits them to tell their own tale almost in their own words, either by extracts or by summaries. -

Egypt in Antiquity: Music and Mythological Deities April Sloan–Hubert Jack Yates High School INTRODUCTION Jack Yates High School in Houston, Texas, is the alma mater of choreographer, producer and actress Debbie Allen and her Tony-award winning sister, Philicia Rashad. The Allen sisters discovered and began to develop their talents and skills at the historic Jack Yates High School. The great jazz vocalist, the late Anita Moore, developed her vocal pipes too at Jack Yates. Anita’s voice although silenced is still remembered for being hand picked by the one and only Duke Ellington to lead his orchestra. Jack Yates High School is also the alma mater of the now retired Lavonia Pope Bassett, the first African American music supervisor for the Houston Independent School District. As the present Choir Director and Fine Arts Department Chair at this talent-rich institution, I am charged with the phenomenal task to lead, mold, develop and return our department to its traditional glory. I am also cognizant of the fact that those were the days before state- mandated tests, budget cuts, site-based management and weaponless wars of destruction. In America’s not-so-long ago past, people from all walks of life were considered culturally refined and upstanding citizens by attending the opera, going to the museum, knowing what dinner fork to use at a well set table, and by the art work in their homes. At the heart of my motivation lie two exceptionally large music history classes with forty plus students each. The students enrolled in these classes are lovingly called “the music historians.” These semi-non musically inclined historians are void of vocal and instrumental skills, but they possess a great love and appreciation for music. -

The pharaoh and his entourage sailed down the Nile on its deck as part of a religious celebration called the Opet festival. This festival commemorated the annual renewal of the royal Ka and reinforced the order of the universe. This ship was the bridge between the human world and the divine. No one has found any archaeological remains of the ship, but iconography, artifacts that would have adorned a miniature version of the Amun-Userhet, and written sources offer an accurate depiction. From this evidence we know that this ship was gilded and covered in precious gems. It also had a specific formula of symbols attached to it that can give us insight into its function in New Kingdom religion. Through the review of the surviving iconography, artifacts, and written accounts of the Amun-Userhet, this thesis looks at the role this ship played in the development of New Kingdom religion. This ship was not only the bridge between the human and divine, but was also the bridge between the state religion of the Old and Middle Kingdom and the new idea of personal piety that arose in the New Kingdom. -

CREATION STORIES NORSE CREATION: THE NINE WORLDS Twas the earliest of times // When Ymir lived; // There was no sand nor sea // Nor cooling wave. // Earth had not been, // Nor Heaven on high, // There was a yawning void // And grass no where IN THE MORNING OF TIME THERE WAS NO SAND, no sea, and no clouds. There was no heaven, no earth, and no grass. There wasonly a region of icy mist called Nifiheim, a region of fire called Muspell, and a great yawning empty void between them called Ginnungagap. Over time, the flames of Muspell warmed the frozen vapors of Nifiheim, and ice melted into water and began to drip. Quickened with life, the water dripped into the void and formed into two gigantic creatures. The first was a wicked frost-giant named Ymir. The second was a huge cow named Audumla. As Ymir drank Audumla's milk, he grew bigger and stronger. One night as Ymir slept, a troll with six heads grew from the soles of his feet, and a male and a female frost-giant sprung from Ymir's warm armpit. The ice cow also brought about life. As she licked salty ice blocks, she slowly licked a new creature into being. The first day hair came forth; on the second day came a head – and finally, on the third day, the body of a new giant emerged. This giant was a good giant whose name was Buri. His sons and grandsons became gods instead of giants, and they stood for all that was good and honorable. -
