The Stela of Khu-Sobek1 (Manchester Museum) This limestone stela of the Manchester Museum (measured 16.5 cm wide and 28 cm high) was found in Abydos in 1901 by J. The pharaoh and his entourage sailed down the Nile on its deck as part of a religious celebration called the Opet festival. This festival commemorated the annual renewal of the royal Ka and reinforced the order of the universe. This ship was the bridge between the human world and the divine. No one has found any archaeological remains of the ship, but iconography, artifacts that would have adorned a miniature version of the Amun-Userhet, and written sources offer an accurate depiction. From this evidence we know that this ship was gilded and covered in precious gems. It also had a specific formula of symbols attached to it that can give us insight into its function in New Kingdom religion. Through the review of the surviving iconography, artifacts, and written accounts of the Amun-Userhet, this thesis looks at the role this ship played in the development of New Kingdom religion. This ship was not only the bridge between the human and divine, but was also the bridge between the state religion of the Old and Middle Kingdom and the new idea of personal piety that arose in the New Kingdom. -

(2019); ‘The Harpokratia in Graeco-Roman Egypt’ Rosetta 23: 1-27 http://www.rosetta.bham.ac.uk/issue23/Abdelwahed.pdf The Harpokratia in Graeco-Roman Egypt Dr. Youssri Abdelwahed Minia University Abstract This paper attempts to reconstruct the festival of the Harpokratia and its significance in the Graeco-Roman period based on Greek papyri uncovered from Egypt and other material and written evidence. Despite the popularity of the cult of the god Harpokrates in the Graeco-Roman period, this article suggests that the festival had a local rather than a pan-Egyptian character since it was only confirmed in the villages of Soknopaiou Nesos and Euhemeria in the Arsinoite area. The Harpokratia was celebrated in Tybi and was marked with a banquet of wine and a bread and lentil-meal. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the festival was the purificatory public procession, which was a suitable moment for different worshippers to address the god for the fulfilment of their supplications. Keywords: Harpokrates, Harpokratia, the Arsinoite nome, Graeco-Roman Egypt. 1 Introduction The paper starts with a brief discussion of the literature on the god Harpokrates to highlight the views found in current literature on the subject and the contribution of this article. It then introduces the figure of Harpokrates and evidence in art, and then briefly explains the theological development and different associations of Harpokrates in the Graeco-Roman period. The significance of the festival from Greek papyri will be the final element presented in the article.1 There has been much discussion on child deities in ancient Egypt, whose birth was associated with the ruler’s royal legitimacy and hereditary succession.2 Like Heka-pa- khered and Ihy, respectively the child incarnations of the god Horus at Esna and Dendera, Hor-pa-khered, also known as Harpokrates, was a child-form incarnation of the god Horus.3 Scholars have approached Harpokrates from different perspectives. -

WILMARTH PREFACE In no particular have modem historical studies made greater progress than in the reproduction and publication of documentary sources from which our knowledge of the most varied peoples and periods is drawn. In American history whole libraries of such sources have appeared or are promised. These are chiefly in English, although the other languages of Europe are of course often largely represented. The employment of such sources from the early epochs of the world's history involves either a knowledge of ancient languages on the part of the user, or a complete rendition of the documents into English. No attempt has ever been made to collect and present all the sources of Egyptian history in a modern language. A most laudable beginning in this direction, and one that has done great service, was the Records of the Past; but that series never attempted to be complete, and no amount of editing could make con- sistent with themselves the uncorrelated translations of the large number of contributors to that series. -

Action can be said to be represented in relief and commented upon in language; representation can be said to be acted out through action and interpreted by recitation; and recitation can be said to be framed by a scene both represented in relief and enacted through ritual. However one chooses to view it, there is an interpretive relation ship between language (recitation) and the other two modes of symbolization — action and representation. In what follows I attempt to investigate the function of language and interpreta tion in ancient Egyptian ritual. 1. The Symbolic Structure of the Holy One of the first occurrences of the Egyptian word ntr, which we translate as "god," was found in a biographical inscription in a tomb that reads: "He made his gods in a form that cannot be erased."1 What this text refers to are the inscriptions and representations in the tomb for which a new technique had indeed been invented. But, one may ask, what is so divine about hieroglyphs that they can be referred to as "gods?" To my way of thinking, it can only be their symbolic character. For hieroglyphs are symbols which represent meaning; in other words, they are visible signs that stand for something invisible, in the same way that sacred symbols stand for the divine — which belongs to another invisible, remote and otherwise unap 88 Jan Assmann proachable dimension. -

Her name is mentioned in most of the hunting scenes which were represent on the walls of the tombs throughout the pharaonic period.the owner of the tomb held titles to show his relation to the goddess as “the beloved and companion of Sekhet. Sekhet appears holding a lot of goods especially in the Nile god processions which were very common on the walls of the Greco- Roman temples.She formed a triad with Hapy and the king, as she was mentioned as the mother of the king who begot him and who suckled him.From this research i found how important is the goddess Sekhet through what she held from titles and epithets and her functions so i considered her to be the goddess of inundation which the Egyptian waited for every year to renew their life and bring fertility to the lad.
