Book Now Rien de Reede Rien de Reede was flutist in the Royal Concertgebouworchestra for more than 30 years. This appointment was preceded by several years as co-principal in the Amsterdam Philharmonic and solo flute of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Besides this he was a professor of flute and chamber music at the Royal Conservatorium (The Hague). He played in various chamber music groups such as http://www.woodwind-group.com.au/email/1307/Dutchmasters.html[12/07/2013 3:09:17 PM] DutchMasters the Viotta Ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouworchestra and Quartetto Amsterdam, a quartet for flute and strings. He was a member of the celebrated Netherlands Wind Ensemble for more than a decade and toured extensively with this group (a.o. U.S., England and tour with Steve Reich and his musicians). For many years he played a series with the complete Bach sonatas with harpsichordist Bob van Asperen in one of Amsterdam's old churches. This series later expanded to 18th-century chamber music repertoire, gained great popularity and lasted for over 20 years. As a chamber music player his main interest is in eighteenth and twentieth century music. Dutch composers including Rudolf Escher, Theo Loevendie and Tristan Keuris wrote works for him, as well as foreign composers such as Isang Yun, Jean Françaix, and Per Nørgård. He recorded numerous CD's, and played flute concertos by Vivaldi, Mozart and Jolivet for Dutch television. He appears regularly as a teacher of masterclasses in Germany, England, Portugal and Italy as well as in the US. In recent years he teaches privately in his studio in Tuscany as well as in Amsterdam. His students have positions in major European orchestras. He is much in demand as a chamber music coach (a.o. Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinski wind music) and coach of orchestral wind sections (European Union Youth Orchestra, Orchestra Verdi-Milano, etc.) as well as a jury member of flute and wind competitions. For more information see: www.riendereede.nl Thies Roorda Thies Roorda studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Paul Verhey and in the United States with the renowned Geoffrey Gilbert. He is flautist in the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and in demand as a chamber musician exploring both different instrumental combinations and contrasting musical styles. He has a particular interest in composers from around the turn of the 20th century (including Reger, Busoni, Dohnanyi, Widor and Casella) and his various recordings of works by these composers have received critical acclaim. Several composers have dedicated works to him including Isang Yun and Jean Françaix. Of the latter, he recorded the Divertimento for flute and piano accompanied by the composer himself. In addition, he has also recorded works by Isang Yun, Giacinto Scelsi and Rudolf Escher. Thies Roorda is a passionate teacher, most recognised for the way he addresses the expressive qualities of the flute sound in all its facets. His approach has resulted in a much sought after course themed on - as he likes to call it - the ‘Blow How’ of the flute. He is professor of flute at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and teaches regularly in his studio in Tuscany (Italy). He taught master classes in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Canada (Banff). Australian Flutist Kate Lawson completed her MA studies with him. Shortly after her graduation in The Hague, she got appointed principal flautist in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. For more information see: www.thiesroorda.nl Don't forget our forthcoming "Coffee and Cake and... Equal Temperament" What did Mozart sound like to Mozart? How did Bach ride the wave of change?
