    Let me be your guide: 21st century choir music in Flanders Flanders has a rich tradition of choir music. But what about the 21st century? Meet the composers in this who's who. Alain De Ley Alain De Ley (° 1961) gained his first musical experience as a singer of the Antwerp Cathedral Choir, while he was still behind the school desks in the Sint-Jan Berchmans College in Antwerp. He got a taste for it and a few years later studied flute with Remy De Roeck and piano with Patrick De Hooghe, Freddy Van der Koelen, Hedwig Vanvaerenbergh and Urbain Boodts). In 1979 he continued his studies at the Royal Music Conservatory in Antwerp. Only later did he take private composition lessons with Alain Craens. Alain De Ley prefers to write music for choir and smaller ensembles. As the artistic director of the Flemish Radio Choir, he is familiar with the possibilities and limitations of a singing voice. Since 2003 Alain De Ley is composer in residence for Ensemble Polyfoon that premiered a great number of his compositions and recorded a CD dedicated to his music, conducted by Lieven Deroo He also received various commissions from choirs like Musa Horti and Amarylca, Kalliope and from the Flanders Festival. Alain De Ley’s music is mostly melodic, narrative, descriptive and reflective. Occasionally Alain De Ley combines the classical writing style with pop music. This is how the song Liquid Waltz was created in 2003 for choir, solo voice and pop group, sung by K’s Choice lead singer Sarah Bettens. He also regularly writes music for projects in which various art forms form a whole.

    The “Work” of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato through the Van Veen Recordings Stacey Low ORCID: 0000-0003-4287-9044 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Musicology/Ethnomusicology) September 2020 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Faculty of Fine Arts and Music University of Melbourne Abstract Canto Ostinato for keyboard instruments (1973-79) is the best-known piece of Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012). The first work of his final compositional period, it advocates indeterminacy in performance, leaving performers to decide on dynamics, articulation, pedalling, instrumentation, and the number of repetitions of most of its 106 sections. Canto Ostinato’s aleatoric nature is investigated in relation to the traditional connotations of a “work,” as highlighted by Lydia Goehr. Georgina Born’s notion of a “provisional” type of work and Peter Elsdon’s classification of a work as the total of its realisations are posited as alternative definitions. An examination of Canto as a “work” would be incomplete without an analysis of the piece’s relationships to its composer, period of conception, performers, realisations, and audiences, and the relationships and contradictions between these aspects. This thesis investigates Canto in relation to several of its precedents in experimental music, such as improvisational music, minimalism, and indeterminacy. Several of ten Holt’s stated beliefs are investigated in relation to the score of Canto, such as the spiritual importance he accorded to the concept of tonality; the special interaction between the performers; the idea of each work developing on its own; and the notion of an “ideal performance” of an indeterminate piece.

    RFO Geschiedenis 1993 Ombuiging en reorganisatie Minister d’Ancona van WVC (foto) presenteerde op 19 februari 1993 haar plannen aan de Tweede Kamer met betrekking tot de Nederlandse orkesten en de opera. Zij stelde voor om niet de door NOS/NOB voorgestelde 10 miljoen, maar de door haar eerder gevraagde 5 miljoen te bezuinigen op het budget van het MCO. Het Muziekcentrum van het NOB kreeg bovendien een jarenlange garantie voor het resterende budget van 52,5 miljoen gulden per jaar, verzelfstandiging van het Muziekcentrum in een stichting, een verbeterde huisvesting en een organisatorisch en artistiek verantwoorder relatie met Radio 4. Artistiek directeur en chef-dirigent Edo de Waart was onder de omstandigheden nog redelijk tevreden over het ministeriële besluit: “Inleveren en inkrimpen doet altijd pijn, maar er is geen sprake van collectief ontslag. De musici kunnen zich de komende jaren volledig concentreren op de muziek en voor het eerst kan een meerjarenbeleid ook werkelijk worden uitgevoerd.” Op 24 maart 1993 ging de Tweede Kamer akkoord met het plan van de minister. Vanaf 1 januari 1994 zou de ombuiging tot stand komen via een ingrijpende efficiency-operatie. Binnen vijf jaar moest een geleidelijke uitbreiding van het RFO van 98 naar 108 formatieplaatsen plaatsvinden, alsmede een inkrimping van het Radio Symfonie Orkest naar 84 musici. Met deze reorganisatie moest de omlegging van 5 miljoen uit het MCO-budget ten gunste van het CoBo-Fonds t.b.v. filmproducties worden gerealiseerd. Rob Overman wordt de nieuwe manager van het RFO “Ik ben een terrier”, introduceerde drs. Rob Overman zichzelf in het eerste nummer van RFO-Informeel, het blad van en voor leden van het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (dat in november 1992 zou verschijnen).

    ten years institute for computer music and sound technology The present CD release contains a heterogeneous collection of pieces related in different ways to the Institute of Computer Music and Sound Technology at the Zurich University of the Arts. It includes works of artists studying, working at or visiting the ICST. The CD presents individual approaches and by no means any sort of institutional aesthetics what- soever. This goes in line with the idea of artistic practice at the institute. While issues like sound generation, spatiality, interaction, performance practice or aesthetic context are continually the subject of debate in labs, studios and classrooms, the specific answers within the artistic practice always reflect autonomous positions, which of course does not exclude mutual influences or shared interests and methods. Nevertheless, a common ground could be formulated as the question how perception, artistic creation and inter- action in a performance space are today challenged by technology. The question seems relevant if we understand musical practice within a broader cultural context in which tech- nology increasingly influences social activity and communication. Here, artistic research and practice play an important role by generating new fields of experience and reflection. In doing so, academic institutions become open spaces where different discourses and cultures communicate and help to establish links between artistic tradition and contempo- rary practice. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory.

The repertoire is varied and brings out all facets of (classical and contemporary) choral singing. Tenso Europe Chamber Choir will encourage mobility of young artists, stimulate the development of ensemble singers and bring unique concerts with choral music to large audiences. The libretto is based on biblical stories of the wise King Solomon. The Queen of Sheba visits King Solomon in the third act. “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” was originally scored for flutes, violins, violas, cellos, and basses. “Abstract and Dance” is a kind of rendered piece. The first movement develops in the direction of twelve tone music which suddenly changes into a stylized Spanish dance in the second part. Born in Delft, Gijs van Dijk studied composition and music theory with Tristan Keuris at the Hilversum and Utrecht Conservatory. He works as a composer, an improvising musician, a classical & jazz guitar player and teacher in Amsterdam.

This gap in scholarship is further exacerbated when the scope of time is narrowed to the last quarter of the twentieth century. Although Minimalism and New Complexity are – at least superficially – highly divergent styles of composition, they both exhibit aspects of a response to modernism. An examination of emblematic examples from the repertoire for solo flute (or recorder), specifically focusing on: Louis Andriessen’s Ende (1981); James Dillon’s Sgothan (1984), Brian Ferneyhough’s Carceri d’Invenzione IIb (1984), Superscripto (1981), and Unity Capsule (1975); Philip Glass’s Arabesque in Memoriam (1988); Henryk Górecki’s Valentine Piece (1996); and Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint (1982), allows for the similarities in both genre’s response to modernism to be highlighted.
