Mai 1894 geborene Tochter Helene sehr schnell ein tiefes Gespür für soziale Fragen entwickelte. Die Option für die Armen und die (ausgegrenzten) Kranken führte sie zum Ordenseintritt bei den Franziskanerinnen von der christlichen Liebe („Hartmannschwestern“ im „Hartmann- spital“ in Wien). Nach dem Krankenhaus Neunkirchen (Oktober 1916 bis Mai 1917) wirkte die nunmehrige „Sr. Maria Restituta“ ab 1919 bis zu ihrer Verhaftung 1942 am Krankenhaus Mödling. Die energische Erste Operations- und Anästhesieschwester Restituta („Resoluta“) ging auch persönlich zur Nachbehandlung von PatientInnen in und um Mödling (z. B. im Missionshaus St. Gabriel in Maria Enzersdorf). Nach langwierigen Operationen gönnte sie sich öfters im krankenhausnahen Gasthaus Mader ein Gulasch und ein Krügel Bier. Aner- kennung und Freundschaft in der Bevölkerung waren ihr ebenso sicher wie Verachtung und Hass seitens der Nationalsozialisten, die nach dem „Anschluss“ 1938 auch das Mödlinger Krankenhaus mit rassistischen und glaubensfeindlichen Schikanen tyrannisierten, denen sich Sr. Restituta entschieden widersetzte – symbolhaft gipfelnd in der Weigerung, die in einem neuen Trakt von ihr selbst aufgehängten Kruzifixe abzunehmen, und im Diktat eines pazifis- tischen und österreich-patriotischen „Soldatenliedes“.

The musical material for the work is a four note theme: the letters B-A-C-H (the last name of Johann Sebastian Bach) treated as a musical motive: B-flat, A, C, B-natural (“H” in German note naming). Starting with Bach himself, this theme has been used by a truly enormous number of composers over the centuries. Most B-A-C-H themed works (at least those for organ), tend to be extremely contrapuntal, likely taking their cue from much of Bach’s own organ music. However, I have very explicitly gone in the other direction and use the theme primarily motivically/melodically and as a generating force for the kind of mixed modality that is typical of my music.
